Survival isn't the only thing on Isaac's mind in Dead Space 2 – this time, he calls the shots.
Sounds suspiciously like they're making this an action title.

For people looking to play Dead Space on the PC without completely horrible mouse controls, here's the solution.
First, disable the vsync in Dead Space. Not only is it completely awful for the mouse, it's capped at a stupid 30 FPS. Next, get Rivatuner (free) and run the separate D3DOverider utility. This utility uses vsync at 60 FPS and, more importantly, makes the mouse work properly. Just make sure you have it running when you play Dead Space, though; it can get kind of goofy with other games so you probably don't want it on all the time.
Once you're set, be amazed at how horrible the mouse controls were before.

ive been seriously considering getting an xbox controller for the pc for this reason. i dont play many new games, but i am also looking to get back into the emulator scene for all those olde mame and snes games i am missing.
i guess it shows when games are developed on a console first lol
Once v-sync is turned off, it controls fine. Shit, last night I cleared the asteroid field with something like 78% on Hard. Could barely do it at all on the 360.
I'm actually swimming in health and ammo right now. Probably not the greatest thing because the game is getting pretty stingy now in handing out more. The enemies are also getting a bit more aggressive (oh look a baby go ahead and show me your tentacles so I can kill you just stop running at me any time now OH SWEET EVERLOVING CHRIST GET OFF OF MY FACE). Pretty much the same thing happened with a bat-infector thing that clambered out of a vent right in front of me.
today it was this vs saints row 2.
i ended up with sr2 only because i am not in the mood for a serious game right now... and because the demo seemed really twitchy and jumpy to me.
just not what i am looking for at this whole "christmas is here, economy sucks, blah" sort of time of the year.
i mean, its probably better than sr2 but i just wanted something dumb... you know?
like watching happy gilmore instead of schindlers list heh
Man the Saints Row 2 port SUCKS. I actually regret the $5 I dropped on it because it is god damn near unplayable.
So, second run here I come! You whores will be happy to know I rigged the wiring back up for ze soundz. I hope you're happy
In all seriousness, can't wait. It won't be like the first run through where I took well over a year to finish the damn thing but I'm not gonna play it from start to finish, I'll pop it in now and then whilst I run through the rest of my backlog. It should make a fantastic break from playing Risen and Alone in the Dark.
I think the helmet pattern could be a little cooler, and I still have no idea why there is like a wall of metal attached to the chest, but I really like that design.
The armor in Dead Space looks like it is partially made out of some strange, durable cloth rather than some generic metallic, bulky stuff.
I still don't really like the metal cone thing that's on the chest of all the RIG's. I guess it's what makes the hologram interfaces, but it looks odd and in the way
I still don't really like the metal cone thing that's on the chest of all the RIG's. I guess it's what makes the hologram interfaces, but it looks odd and in the way
See I kinda like it because of that. Sounds weird but it looks like it was actually designed practically in the game universe rather than just to look cool for the player.
So I had to pause the game to post this, but man, this game is transforming the way I feel about fear.
As my previous posts indicate, I am terrified of this game. Just flat out, weepy, torturously scared. I used to only play for like 10-20 minutes at a time, because my nerves were just shot.
But now, I'm in Chapter 2 and just entered
the morgue
and I cant believe myself. I still have that pit in my stomach, and that horrible, jittery, terrified feeling, but somehow my mentality has just totally shifted. I honestly feel really dumb saying it, about a video game, but I have to give the developers a ton of credit for giving me a feeling a game has never given me before.
Now, it's almost like adrenaline or something, because I have this whole BRING IT ON attitude. When the lights go out, and sounds start coming, I draw the cutter and this fear driven feeling comes over me that I am going to fucking kill whatever is coming for me.
I just, for the first time, stasis'd a necro, and blasted its arms off, and oh my god when it all went back to real motion and just dropped dead I felt like I could handle ANYTHING.
Yet Im still scared shitless.

The game has the same exact effect on me; I'm normally pretty wussy when it comes to in-game scares and survival horror, but the gameplay of this appealed to me, and I love the game but I typically only play it in short bursts because I'm fucking terrified and jump at everything. The sound design has so much to do with it; back when I ran through it, I was playing with headphones because my wife was doing freelance design work in the other room, but she could still hear me going "OH SHIT OH GOD OH SHIT" the entire time. It's those goddamned metal pipes that keep shifting and clanging to the ground that kill me.
The early parts of the game are really the scariest, because your RIG is still pretty weak and you don't have too much upgraded; as the game goes on and you start to experiment with other weapons, and gather more nodes to boost yourself, Isaac starts looking like more of a badass and you start to feel like one along with it. In a way, it calls on that Ripley-esque survival instinct; at first, you just want to do what you can to get the hell off of the ship, but by the endgame you're almost hoping for fights so you can blast the shit out of everything.
Whoever mentioned the "Alien --> Aliens" comparison earlier, I kind of hope that happens with Dead Space 2. Still keeping the scares and atmosphere, but expanding on actions and options.
I liked that there was this projector in the front of his suit which displayed everything he was seeing. I really love how they tried to ground the game mechanics. The HUD is a holographic projection from his suit, you can see his suit integrity and the way it's displayed is ingenious (safety precaution for miners working in teams), all the information is right there and they didn't have to stick bits onto the surface of the screen to do it.
I really loved the visual design of Isaac's suit, it looked sturdy but also utilitarian, and like something designed to protect engineering crew in harsh environments. When I got the Combat suit I just thought "Ugh". I mean it looks like it's supposed to, a generic Space Marine suit of armour, but that's pretty much why I hated it. I couldn't switch back to the level 5 armour fast enough.
In any case, regarding the projector on the new suit, I think it might just look bigger because of the angle we're viewing it at.

Looks.....interesting.
Can't really say much about the suit design till we get a different view of it. Helmet does look better/cooler though :^:
So, uh, how are they going to justify Isaac using mining tools when he is "calling the shots" and taking it to the necromorphs?
Cause mining tools kick ass! Need to remove a limb? Cut it off with a tool made for cutting apart rock!
The little part of the movie I saw had the security pumping loads of bullets into the necros but bullets don't real cut as such so it took an absolute tonne of shots. A ripper though? Easy peasy. I imagine this'd be Isaac actually telling his team (if he actually has one) 'Look, this works best, trust me.'
If you look closely (it'd probably be easier on the PC version), there is scrolling text on the inner surface of the extension coming out of the top of Isaac's chest. Obviously, it is there so the engineer can get info or read stuff while keeping his hands free.
I like the utilitarian design, but it's sort of silly that the oxygen and stasis meters are also on the back of the suits. Sure, if you're working in a team it may be helpful to know if someone has been injured - but the other information is probably more useful to the individual then anybody around him. This is assuming that Isaac doesn't have access to this info himself either on his chest screen or displayed in his helmet.
As for the mining tools, I also wondered why the characters used them in Extraction. I always figured that Isaac was modifying them beyond their purpose, but would other people have the knowledge to know how to do that? Why would a power saw natively support a function that fired the blade out at high speed? Why would a tool designed to cut through minerals be effective at long distances? Don't you think these tools, which are highly portable and could easily disfigure or kill someone if improperly used, would have some sort of safety features built in?

There's no reason for it to not be showing inside the helmets HUD and also on the back for team members to see. We just don't know if it's on the HUD because we never see the HUD. It would be pretty handy for the team to see too. If he's really busy, he might not be looking at his oxygen supplies, and another team member could see he's nearly out and tell him to get the hell back inside.
And mxmarks, same thing for me. I got to chapter 5 and saved myself into a corner, so I restarted. I'm up to chapter 2, and I don't want to touch it. I'm a complete pussy when it comes to horror, and not only does this game do it well, it does the particular type of horror that really gets to me really fucking well. I want to play it, I love the game, but man. Fuck the designers.

It is for health and safety. You can see from Dead Space Extraction, which is first person that this information is also displayed on the internal HUD as well so they can see their relevant status. It also lets others around them monitor their condition and check vitals, both from the ship itself (they knew everyone was dying on the ship as it was happening) and from those around you.
That armor is fucking awesome and i love the chest-display, on all the RIGs. God damn i love this game and i'm so glad there's gonna be a sequel... oh man.
My only complaint about the suit is the 70 second air supply.
I mean, REALLY? This engineering suit meant for work in hazardous environments, including the void of space, has only a minute-and-change built-in air-supply? I'm sure its only supposed to be an emergency backup and that they're supposed to have an attachable air-pack but it should at least have 10+ minutes. Assuming you're working on the exterior hull it may very well take more than a minute to reach an airlock if your primary air-supply malfunctions.
Safety, people, Saftey. Safety First, Safety Last, Safety Always!

If they were going to have a 10 minute air supply, you may as well have not bothered with the counter, or the oxygen refill stations and all the rest of that stuff.
Oxygen management was just another means of adding tension and immediacy to whatever you were doing when you stepped into vacuum. That's also why you can upgrade it in 20 second increments and not just add in an optional tank.
So Im very curious what I just saw. On one hand I like the 'what did I just see' feeling, but on the other Im afraid of missing something semi-important. End of Chapter 2:
So in the morgue, I'm assuming the captain was on the table in that glass room, and that necromorph...thing...seemed to come out of the celining and...put on his skin? or something?
When that thing burst into that room, I was scampering to get a better angle on it (and figure out if I was in danger or if it was contained in that room), and then OTHER necros were coming in, so I was all over the place. THEN when the thing burst through the glass (which was fucking awesome), it was all out chaos, and when everything was dead, the codes from the captain were next to me. That THING jumped on my back at one point, but I really dont get what happened.
And an answer of "you dont need to get anything other than it's just fucked up." is totally acceptable.

What you saw was one of the infector Necro's at work. The flying thing uses a proboscis to turns bodies into necromorphs, and then it flies around and does the same to others.
So basically it turned the Captain into a Slasher, which then attacked you. When you finished it was right next to you. I'm guessing that whilst you were scrabbling round you didn't notice the flying thing going around infesting other corpses, but that's what was happening.
it's a new enemy. it turns dead bodies in to black, stronger necromorphs. however, if the bodies have no limbs, it can't do it (or it makes a very powerless necro), so for the rest of the game you will be stomping on dead bodies just in case they throw a couple of these things at you
And totally explains where all these necros were coming from once the thing burst out of the glass. I was looking for vents and couldn't figure it out.
I may reload that save to watch it in action again.
My fear is being transformed into a dangerous curiosity, and I like it.

Somehow I doubt there is much weapon development with dismemberment in mind in ANY universe, and besides why change something that works?
Because mining tools are designed for cutting. Isaac needs his plasma cutter, not military hardware.
