You read it right -- Konami's rhythm-and-dance game that's been cited as a way to get chubby gamers off their keisters is about to sit them back down again with a new off-Broadway musical called Dance Dance Revolution.
The comedic musical stage production depicts a futuristic Orwellian society where dancing is illegal. That's until a prophet named Moonbeam Funk shows up to motivate a group of street thugs with dance skills. Promotions for the play cite that the play is loosely inspired by the game, features a Footloose appeal, buckets of free beer, and a cast of "40 really attractive, barely-clothed young actors."
Created by Les Freres Corbusier, a New York City-based theater troupe whose recent satirical productions include A Very Merry Unauthorized Children's Scientology Pageant (which tells the story L. Ron Hubbard in a classic nativity setting) and Hell House (which is based on Evangelical haunted houses that depict gay men and latte-sipping secular humanists).
Tickets for Dance Dance Revolution, which runs from December 3-20, are now on sale for $18.

This could have been awesome if the word "dancing" was replaced with "funk" and was talking about Jet Set Radio.
I like the way you think.
My girlfriend linked me this DDR musical nonsense... and all I can ask is how. How is this done? And how the fuck would dancing be illegal? That's the most nonsensical shit I've heard ever.

"40 really attractive, barely-clothed young actors."
...yeah?
Keep talking, I'm listening.
Although, this sounds a lot like you know, low-income-areas being saved by dancing movies. None of which I can remember the names of.
I'm thinking of that young woman who wants to open a dance studio but lacks the money, starts as a dance instructor for a community center, tries out in working in some MTV-ish group, gets noticed, starts making her own dance videos, is sexually harassed by the man, sticks it to the man but wins out the hearts of the audience, her community and ends up opening her dance studio.

So I am guessing they mean the play is inspired by the name only.
Like, dancing is illegal and now there's going to be a dance dance revolution...just like that game!
I'd be worried that this would make the game look bad, but Konami are doing just fine pulling that off on their own.
Supernova 2 was garbage, and X looks like it'll be even worse.
Andamiro are running circles around Konami, and if NXAbsolute doesn't bury DDR once and for all, I've lost faith in the arcade industry.
Then again, I guess Konami make all their money from console sales, so it might not matter.
Quite frankly I'm shocked to hear there still is an arcade industry. I think our last one died a couple years ago. Well, unless you count the 5 outdated machines movie theaters always seem to have.

is that the one where the lady in the commercial goes "I said I want honey."
this sounds like a dancing version of that RPG where basketball was outlawed. Shut up and Jam or something

Yeah, I haven't heard of either of the companies mentioned above. Then again, the only new machines I've seen are a few shitty hunting simulators and the same damn golf game every sports bar is apparently required by law to have.
Speaking of that with all the attention Rock Band is getting (and GH, too) I really have been missing something more active like DDR but it seems to die out.
Does Konami have anything new on the console front or any new competitor to keep an eye on? I'd love to get a nice dance pad and get back into it but it doesn't seem to have anything coming out that's not a musical instrument.

Andamiro still release an update to their Pump It Up series every year, but they don't release home versions. They tried once, and it bombed horribly.
NXAbsolute is the next mix, and it's supposed to release in a month or so.
(It looks awesome, like usual.)
Konami still puts out Universe on the 360 and Wii/PS2 versions, but the songlists for those seem terrible.
The last AC one that I played, Supernova 2, was a waste of time.
X doesn't look much better.
Moonbeam Funk had better be performed by Red Machine D. :P
And I can already imagine an Elite Beat Agents musical. Everyone in the audience dancing with the performers to "Jumping Jack Flash" would be the new "Clap to revive Tinker Bell".
I'm just not sure how they'd get a Taxi to drive up the side of a hospital built like a tower.

Thanks for the info. So not much for the PS3 then?

Oh right! Her name was honey! Hm... what can Google do with this paragaph and name.
EDIT:
Great! I found it! It's called Honey, made in 2003. *high fives soal*
You could probably just watch that movie and not only will there be women in the movie, but it'll also be about dancing and revolutionizing the music industry. But dancing isn't outlawed and is instead an alternative career that EVERYONE can win in.
Well, musicals are awesome. But DDR? I'm very confused.
Also, singing and dancing and shit being outlawed is a common theme in stuff. Not really an original idea. Are they just gonna dance in place really fast?
It would be awesome if you just see the floor painted with DDR mats all over and when they are dancing they are only stepping on the arrows like some crazy hybrid double mode.
I got DDR Hottest Party for the Wii, and really my only complaints are having to keep shutting off the stupid Wiimote integration and "special" arrows, and the lack of pads that plug into the Wiimote for wireless ability.

Before that video above ruins the image of dance games forever, here's an example of how to play one with style:

That's Legal & Faber from Brazil, I think.
The game being Pump It Up NX.
I forget the site, but there are TONS of players that really bring a lot of style and skill to the DDR/PIU games instead of the stiff torso/arms while legs flail strategy. Or my personal favorite, support yourself on the bar because you have no sense of balance.
Just think, it might make way for Metal Gear Solid, The Musical.
Featuring such hits as "BROTHER", "Metal Gear?!", "My Arm", and "A Security Camera?!".
:?
Y'know what's sad? I can actually picture in my mind how the security camera scene would play out in my mind. It'd be a break after the first song, and then he gets caught by the camera, and a new dance scene begins with him evading guards in a dancing manner. The guards could even coordinate their search in dance.

Isn't that the plot of the Queen musical?
The play is made up all guys.

This. This a thousand times.
Also, I agree that an Elite Beat Agents show would be simply epic. That game just didn't get enough love for how awesome it was.
Damnit! But it could still at least be a good play, but ugh. But :^: for their humor
Oh thank heavens. I though I was going to do something drastic to stop this.

Breaking out in spontaneous coordinated song and dance should be illegal.

This isn't the first time Konami's let media rape the franchise(see: Dance Revolution, a CBS show), and I doubt it'll be the last.

I hate having an active imagination sometimes.
That would be great, especially if they decided to act superserious and do it in the same style as Les Mis.

Though honestly I would watch a lot of videogame: the musicals. Where's my Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure: The Musical?
I would even look forward to a ddr musical, but ddr doesn't have like a plot or anything so they are just going to do whatever they want.
