Failing Combo Drive, fixable?

So, the DVD/CDRW combo drive in my desktop seems to be going south. It reads CDs just fine, but putting in a DVD results in some spinning noises and clicking sounds, then nothing (won't play or recognize the DVD.)

Some elementary googling leads me to believe that this means the DVD laser has stopped working properly. What I'm wondering is, is there any realistic way to fix it (can it be unstuck or something?), or should I just go buy a new drive? I'm comfortable working with computer parts, but I'm not any sort of expert.

I've sometimes had luck cleaning the lens with a qtip and rubbing alcohol. There is a possibility that you could make it so that it won't read anything.

You can get a new DVD-RW drive for $20 now. Might be time for an upgrade.
