Square meant a lot more to gamers pre-FF8, though.
So he's got a point.
I would have to say you're pretty wrong there considering most modern gamers didn't even know who the hell Square was prior to Final Fantasy VII. I grew up on Square, and was right there with the release of FFI on the NES, but they were niche as hell before VII was release on the Playstation.
I wouldn't call the American-released FF's or Chrono Trigger "niche." Certainly not as wide-spread as FFVII was, but hardly niche.
Yeah in FF6 most of the cast was "emo" in some way, by your definition.
Terra: Life is so sad being a half-breed freak nobody understands me
Locke: Waaahh my girlfriend has been dead forever she was the love of my life I can't move on.
etc.
To be fair, none of them had much to be thrilled about.
Well, except Edgar. The man was a pimp. And he had a castle that could tunnel underground.

Eh, it might be a bit higher than niche, but it definitely wasn't anywhere near the level of something like a Mario, or even stuff like Street Fighter of the time. I mean hell man, we got an entire three games out of six in the series, and Chrono was pushed back for months at the time so Square in the US could publish something a bit more "mainstream" like Secret of Evermore. I mean hell, we didn't get a lot of their other 8 and 16 bit series like the Saga and Treasure Hunter games either because the US just wasn't a great RPG country, even for Square.
I don't think that Final Fantasy's problem is angst. Like someone else said, angst has been a staple of the series since IV. Cecil was a walking, armored ball of angst for most of the game, to say nothing of Kain and his daddy/woman issues.
For me, the problem has been SE's decision to make most of their recent protagonists teenagers. As an adult, it's frustrating being saddled with a whiny ball of annoyance (I'm looking at you, Tidus) for 40-80 hours. Coming of age stories only work if you like the character...I haven't liked most of SE's recent characters (except XII's, sans Vaan and Penelo).
I long for the day when Square releases a game where I'm certain that the male lead's testicles have dropped, his voice doesn't crack, and he has the ability to grow copious amounts of facial hair.

I think part of that is a matter of cultural differences. It seems almost universal that JRPGs have younger heroes than most WRPGs. IIRC, Cecil was the oldest main character we've had in an FF title.

Slightly off-topic here but am I the only one who thinks it'd be rad as hell to have a traditional Final Fantasy game set in FFXI's world
A lot of people are put off by the MMO genre but FFXI's storylines are really quite top-notch
I would definitely purchase such a thing in a second.
And to the poster above me, well, when I was 20, people in their early to mid 30s seemed old to me, too. When I was in my teens, that was god damned old.

...really? I think the only time "30" seemed old to me was when I was single digits.

Yeah, really I mean not like insulting old, but the people I knew in that age group back then did seem like cranky codgers, and hell, now that I'm in that area myself, I still see a lot of cranky bastard codgers my age. But oh yeah, especially mid teens? That was twice my age dude, of course that seemed old.
Vaguely off topic, but am I the only person who feels that the whole merger thing was damaging to Enix, who frankly always made better games?
No i feel the same way, i think Squaresoft by itself was far better than Square-Enix, their last Final Fantasy felt like a non multiplayer MMO, really did not enjoy the combat in the least. They never used to pull crap like that. Same with FF X-2 (eww) i think the good days of Square are gone for the most part. They still squeeze out a gem or two but they never used to churn out garbage along side it like they do now.

I think all that happened here is that with the popularity, came variety. Square had a much bigger target to work with in 2006 than they did in '99. In '99 they knew exactly who their audience was, but after gaining some popularity, more and more people started asking for variations, new IPs, etc...
So what happened, well we got variations, and new IPs. Now, as with all things trying to hit a large target consumer, some people liked it, others didn't.
Hell, I doubt you could name one SE game that this entire forum can agree to dislike.
Me for example, I like the classic turn based RPGs. So After X, I didn't see much in these recent years. However, becuase I missed the boat on the NES and SNES era FF games, the DS remakes have been wonderful treats for me.
At the same time though, I enjoyed a handful of spinoffs and such. X-2 was fun (I like its combat), I liked Dirge of Cerberus, and while I can't stand Tactics advance, the Original Tactics is amazing.

You thought that travesty of game design and borderline lesbian touchy scenes was good? That was the worst FF i have ever played in my life. It was terrible and the storyline made absolutely no sense what so ever. I remember my ex gf liked it a lot because it had some love story thing, but even she said the game started to make no sense about half way through it. And every boss battle could be beaten by making all your characters into warrior types except one mage so the game was very easy as well.
As to the above poster i agree, i havn't much liked the main FF games since they started screwing with the turn based combat either. I like that there are no random battles in the new ones, but i dont like the MMO combat junk they are doing where the game basically plays itself. I am liking the remakes, and i enjoyed Crisis Core even if its combat was a little on the strange side.

Especially the girl on girl action massage minigame right? Where the graphics screw up and Yuna gets a rectal exam? Yeah best game ever right there. Which also sported great combat and gameplay. While it certainly was thick with GRRL POWER! most FFs have at least one horrible, nervous system burning theme. Also, MOST Final Fantasies don't really make sense after the halfway point without INCREDIBLE suspension of critical thinking and disbelief.

Maybe because one was not nearly as graphic as the other, one did not have an entire minigame based on it and was done for comedic value. The other was done for old perverts and fanboys who have never touched a woman before.

Honestly, I think the brain cancer-inducing thematic aspects of the game are what turned you off and the rest is a rationalization. That's fine, it was truly AWFUL in that aspect. In my case, I hated, loathed, reviled FF8 for the "It's like your high school, BUT FOR MAGIC MILITARY MERCENARIES WITH IMPROBABLE WEAPONS" aspects (not to mention plot disintegration that makes FFX2 look coherent).
X-2 had arguably the finest implementation of ATB in the series, and it's also personally my favorite use of the job system in the series. (You can call the Dresspheres "Jobs" if it makes you feel like more of a man.) The story starts off light and fluffy, but to me it was a nice change of pace, especially from how somber FFX was overall.
Apparently FFXIII will be taking lots of cues from FFX-2 in terms of battle flow and direction, which has me very excited.
Part of growing older for me was been realising that Final Fantasy is not actually all that great in terms of narrative, old or new. They haven't grown any worse since IV.
So maybe someone here could tell me about FFVII. I've still got my copy for the original playstation and recently tried to sell all my PS2/PSone stuff on ebay together as a package. I listed all the games and someone contacted me all flipping the fuck out over FFVII and wondering specifically about it and would I sell it separate. I remember that game being pretty goddamn awesome but I didn't think it would still be worth like $150 used today.
I noticed other listings mentioned a few things about it, one being that it's out of print (figured that much), and something about a "black edition"...someone asked me about that as well. Were there different runs, and how do I tell which one I have?

No but when you have thousands of more lines of text, less can be taken on assumption and frankly, you have more rope to hang yourself with.

I think I know. It had a greatest hits edition which had the fairly ugly green Playstation Greatest Hits type thing going down the side of the cover. That seems to really irk a lot of obsessive collectors. There's also the original version, which has the black playstation logo down the front side of the cover.
The only other thing I can think of would be if later editions of the game don't use the black bottomed cds, but I'm betting they're wanting to know if it's a greatest hits edition or not. Why the dummies don't just ASK that is beyond me, though.

Hell, they barely even make their flagship series anymore. They *published* triAce games, but had no stake in their development.
Seems like the bulk of Enix's development stopped after the SNES.

Oh, all my characers except one? So... the other 2 then?

Just making sure you were still talking about X-2, as when you specificied all but 1, you seemed to be leading that all was a bigger number than 2.
Also, what Blackjack said.

Especially the girl on girl action massage minigame right? Where the graphics screw up and Yuna gets a rectal exam? Yeah best game ever right there. But to each their own, im not big on fan service games like that for the most part. And that's pretty much all the game was, fan service and a storyline that made no sense when put with FFX, a game i actually did enjoy.
How about that Blood of Bahamut.

Oh, and don't forget the scene where the Male lead character dresses up like a girl in hopes some old perverted bastard wants to sleep with him.
Oh wait... That was FFVII, odd some people will still call that "Best game ever right there."
edit: Best TOTP evar.

Maybe because one was not nearly as graphic as the other, one did not have an entire minigame based on it and was done for comedic value. The other was done for old perverts and fanboys who have never touched a woman before.
Geez.
Apparently FFXIII will be taking lots of cues from FFX-2 in terms of battle flow and direction, which has me very excited.

The battle system was solid and I enjoyed the job system
But my God, the storyline
I think I stopped somewhere around when they had to get uniforms to break into the villians' headquarters, it was just too dumb for me
Maybe one day I'll go back and finish it, but only if I can be certain that nobody will walk in on me playing it
