An odd stratocaster (guitar thread) [solved]

I was at the guitar shop today, and I noticed a used Fender Strat for $140 with a gig bag. I'm pretty wary of this since it seems awfully cheap but after playing it, it played pretty well. I admit though I haven't played a million different guitars so I'm not sure if it was really top quality.

Now a few things bugged me about it. One, obviously, it was super cheap. Two, the headstock was not your classic Fender-strat headstock. The guy at the shop said it was a bit of an oddity and they don't make them anymore. He said if I held onto it for awhile it'd be a collectors item, but he went to help another customer before I could ask him why.

The headstock wasn't like the normal sort of ball-cut away head. It was solid, almost looked closer to a Tele headstock except without the bit on the bottom cut away. It said Fender Stratocaster though.

It was obviously fairly new, had a few dings and scratches here and there but it was in decent condition. I don't think it had a trem arm, or if it did they didn't have it on in the shop.

Is this a fake? Did they ever do an issue of Strat's with headstocks like that? That's the only real reason I can see for it being so cheap. It didn't seem to have any major problems after playing it for about 10 minutes, messing with the pots, no fret buzz, neck seemed alright and I'm pretty sure it was setup already.

edit: The headstock looked something like http://www.carvinmuseum.com/images/namm2003/newfloyd.jpg - though a bit smoother.

Could be a custom some guy fashioned up in his basement.

A Squier? Or maybe a Rondo?

Anyway if your question is if it's worth it the answer is probably no. There are a million strat ripoffs out there.

It wasn't a Strat, it was a Starcaster. They're rubbish. Avoid.
