So, I've had a guitar for a while. The thing is, I suck.

Badly.

So I have a request for you fella's that are actually competent with their 6-stringed instruments, I need some tips and tricks to help me improve.

Practice routines and such, usefull websites are also welcome.


You may also discuss other instuments and your love for them.

    Yay guitar thread.

    I'm going to bed now so I will have to contribute tomorrow.

    There once was an old old old guitar thread where bonk and tube I believe all posted lots of useful stuff regarding theory and scales and tips etc etc. Too tired to find it.

    I have a nice Les Paul. Which is way to classy for someone that sucks as bad as I do.

    Best way to learn how to play guitar is find some songs you like and learn how to play them. Also this:

    I've owned my acoustic for a year and still can't play a damn thing. I'm going to need to take lessons I think. I suck at doing it on my own.

    The songs i really like have these crazy fucking guitar parts that are impossible for me to learn! I can't even play Clapton's Whiteroom.

    Let alone Fermented Offal Discharge from Necrophagist.

    I have a really talented friend who is trying to teach me. Great player. Worthless fucking teacher.

    Pick some more radio style songs (ie. simple) and don't worry about the solos yet. Just focus on chords and power chords to get your hands used to the strings. As for solos you should start working up and down scales to build dexterity and accuracy.

    The reason I say pick some songs you like is because scales and chord practice is really boring and being able to strum out a recognizable tune is way more exciting and you'll stick to it better.

    Learn how to play Fire Water Burn. That's an easy one to play.

    If you're going to take lessons, take lessons in a style that you actually enjoy. When I took up guitar (lo, these many years ago) my parents insisted that I take classical. I'm not really sure why. As a result, the stuff I was learning was nothing I wanted to play, so I never practiced and really never got to be any good.

    I still play now and again. I have a rather nice Strat that is presently sitting in its case waiting for me to unpack my gear again.

    I'm going to get a resonator guitar in a short while, and begin figuring out what sort of magic unlocks the music I wish to play. Big fan of delta blues, and I hope I can get the sound I am looking for.
