Help a new PC gamer out?

My 360 just died about two days ago for the fourth time, and I've decided that enough is enough. I'm tired of it breaking down. I considered switching to a PS3, but I decided to save that until a later day (the only game I really would be interested in playing on that is Killzone 2). The Wii is kind of just there, so that leaves the PC as my gaming alternative.

I think my computer is relatively fast, but I want to make it so I can play Left 4 Dead at a very high setting whilst still maintaining a solid frame rate. My PC seems capable of that now (I played the demo), but not everything is on high and it slows down just a tad when zombies appear. Now, I'm not sure about my PC's stats (video card, etc), so if someone could tell me how to find that information, I could share it with you guys, and then you could tell me basically what to buy to make it faster.

Oh, and does anyone have any recommendations for games? I mainly like strategy games like of Age of Empires (though that game sort of annoys me, since all you basically due is stock up on soldiers and then send them out) and Company of Heroes. That's all I really know of though.

I also enjoy shooters, so any suggestions there would be great too.

Thanks.

EDIT: So here are the specs of my computer -

Processor - AMD Phenom 9500 Quad-Core Processor (4 CPUs), ~2.2GHz
Memory - 3070MB RAM
Display - ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT

(Thanks SpongeCake).

This world is a dark, dark forest. And if you open up a man, and look into most of their hearts, you'll find disgust and evil. Your own parents, your mother and father, would slit your throat just to get ahead. And when you find a wife, you watch her. And you don't believe a single word that she says. Because, at the core, people are shit.

Go to your Start menu, click Run and type in DXDiag (if you're in Vista just type it in the little search bar). The System tab will give your basic speed, memory and what-not with the Display tab having your video card info.

One of the easier ways to find out the specs of your pc is to run dxdiag. To do this, click start run, type dxdiag then click save all information. In that file at the top it will list your OS, amount of memory, and system model. If you scroll down a little bit you can see your video card under display devices.

Those things are the most important when trying to figure out upgrades.

I heard that valve is selling their collection of games on steam for $99 I'm at work so I cannot check that. That is a really good deal if you haven't played through HL2 or portal. Not to mention L4D is coming out soon.

    edit:
    Beaten on Dxdiag
Found the link for $99 steam. http://store.steampowered.com/sub/1134/

Your graphics card is going to be the main limitation. The 2400 XT is an older budget card that isn't going to be that great.

I would shell out around $150 for a new video card. Some examples:

    Radeon 3870: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102719
    NVidia 8800GT: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150272
    Radeon 4850: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127359
    NVidia 9800GTX: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150314

Those are pretty much in order least powerful to most powerful. But any of those cards would suit your needs. Just make sure you buy a decent brand (XFX, EVGA, MSI, etc.) with a decent warranty.

One thing though, Psychonauts is free on Gametap. No registration necessary. Just download Gametap and then download Psychonauts. There's a few other good free games there, but Psychonauts is the best.

Hey, sorry for the thread hi-jack, but I seem to be having a problem with Left 4 Dead on my PC.

It looks great, it runs great, but at seemingly random times the screen freezes and I hear the same noise repeated over and over again. Then the only way to get out of it is to shut down the computer.

    Help?
