1. Polysyllabic names are easier for dogs to pick out than monosyllabic ones, but ones that are too long can also be troublesome. Two syllables seems to be about right.
2. Including 'hard' consonants tends to make it easier for the dog to pick out its name among other sounds.
3. Dogs owners that give their dogs people-names tend to be more attentive to their dogs.
Literary references get bonus points. I wanted Atticus or Holden, but they have not tested well with the other folks that will love this doggie.
Marlowe? Since as with any cute dog people will default to bastardizing the name to have a cutesy -y, that gives you a bonus literary reference because then it becomes "Marley".
I tend to name my pets after famous world leaders, usually using the country of origion as a basis...i.e. I have a Rat Terrier (English) named Winston (After Churchhill obviously). German is hard though....Hitler wont work....hrmmm
Otto or Bismark is probably what I would roll with based upon my naming scheme.

Although I like Marlowe, too.
