I've used the search function, and it seems like one of these threads comes up at least once a month. None of them answered the question I have, so this is a new "Web Hosting" thread.
I am looking for a web hosting service that:
-Will host a few very simple html pages with a few images that take up very little disk space. That's it. Simple. I don't need some super 5 Terabyte/mo plan.
-Will register a .com domain as part of the sign-up process. (one that I have ownership of, and that they won't hold hostage or something)
-Has a good repution.
-Is "secure" and will protect my personal information (I won't get a bunch of stupid shit via whois, etc)
And that's it. While I expect any hosting service to come with advanced features, I don't need any of them. I'm already proficient with basic website design, the host is all I need.
I would highly recommend you purchase the domain yourself from a full registrar. It comes down to branding and control of your domain. I use GoDaddy and they work out very well.
As far as hosting, you can go pretty much anywhere. If you want to put all your eggs in one basket (for easy accounting) I believe most of the major registrars also host web pages.
I've heard some bad things about GoDaddy that led me to believe it's something I should stay away from.
As far as a registrar, I have used them for most of my sites with no problem.
As far as hosting, while I haven't heard of anything bad, it would not surprise me.
I would check out Webhosting Talk as they have a pretty well established community. IIRC the consensus there was that 1&1 was the best host out there for the price & features you are looking at. Again, I have no experience with them but they seem to be a popular choice for PA forumers.
If you're not expecting massive amounts of traffic, I'm a big fan of http://www.nearlyfreespeech.net. Instead of having monthly plans, they charge you based on space and bandwidth usage. I think it starts at $1.00/GB bandwidth and $0.01/MB-month for storage, and it costs $0.01/day for registration privacy or MySQL access. Their support staff responds very quickly (within hours in my experience) and they've got a hugeass support wiki. They are a very small site, though, and I can't speak from experience how well equipped to handle massive bandwidth usage like a Slashdotting. That being said, I have yet to have a single complaint about them, and I certainly can't complain that most months my hosting bill never goes over $1.50 or $2.00 for a single site.
I still use GoDaddy for a few clients (at least until my two-year hosting contracts expire), but I wouldn't recommend them. Their prices are fair, the support is decent (in my experience) and the hosting is reliable, but their online interface is one of the slowest and clunkiest things I've ever used.
I use 1&1 for my domain registrar, I've had no issues... As for web hosting, I hae a Windows Home Server, so I do it myself... Just have my domain point to it's domain, and we're all happy.... Then again, I also use FiOS so me hosting ain't that hard....
Though I don't use it so much lately... Kinda hoping one day to be able to...

I've used them since 2004. In 2004 their helpdesk got to tickets within hours on holidays. They still do this in 2008.
They have good uptime, and the prices are decent. For privacy, I'm pretty sure you can get a private registration during signup.

I switched to GoDaddy when I switched to Hasweb, and haven't had any trouble.

Edit: $ 23.94 for each 6 month block, not bad at all.
