Definitely, definitely pick up Uncharted. I really need to play that through again, it's the only game my other half has ever sat down and watched me play from start to finish. I cannot WAIT for the sequel.
Also you should buy Heavenly Sword (that's right folks, "buy", not "rent". It's all of about £10 now over here which is only twice the price of a rental and it's a stunning game with brilliant production values).
And buy everything on the PSN that's exclusive because, by and large, it's ALL awesome.

I don't understand all the love for Uncharted, I picked it up cheap last week and have been playing through it. It's an average to okay game. I thought yahtzee was pretty bang on with his review.
As to my game recommendation... WipEout HD. It may be a PSN store game but in my opinion is right now the best game on the PS3, possibly the best racer going at the moment. (Yes, I enjoy it more than GTA 4 and MGS 4)

You have no soul. Uncharted was beyond awesome.
I really really can't wait until they start unveiling the sequel. It's one of my most anticipated games of next year, and I haven't even seen it yet.
Having just gotten the platinum, I shall say I wish you the best of luck reaching that goal.
Also, remember your blood pressure medication.
I'm sitting around 75% with 2 speed runs and the silver/gold time trial trophies left. I kinda like doing the speed runs but the time trials are really damn annoying. I'm sitting at around 24 points at the moment and I can't imagine how difficult it's going to be to get up to 50. Despite all that, I'm hoping that I'll have the platinum by the time Prince of Persia comes out next friday.

See, I rented MGS4 and found it to be a horrible horrible game and much preferred Uncharted. I think it was the amazing production values, excellent acting, fantastic graphics and great animation that did it for me. It was a fantastic experience (Although admittedly some of the gun fights could go on a bit) and it felt like I was playing an adventure film. It must have had something to interest my gf.
I didn't see the Zero Punctuation review, I got tired of Yahtzee's schtick after a few episodes but I can imagine the complaints and it's a far from perfect game but still remains one of my favourites (and most memorable) this year.
And yes I really can't wait for the sequel. If they tone up the exploring and tone down the gun fights then I'd be even happier.
Amazing production values? Excellent acting? Fantastic graphics and geat animation?
I understand you just said you disliked MGS4. But you're also describing MGS4 - a game whose defense I don't often come to (yes, big cutscenes, yes, gameplay switch-ups) but I played through the first 3/4 of Act 1 last night and just reminded myself how astounding that title is.
Uncharted :^:
MGS4 :^:
Kittens :^: for they have the best graphics and sound effects of all.
But it's worth noting that Grinch isn't alone in his dim appraisal of MGS, and I've been playing Metal Gear since I found it on the NES, so I am perhaps more eager to adore the series.

See from what I've played of it it's decidedly average. However that's like the first level or so. It's £12 in CEX and I'll probably get it after I've finished my holiday pile. I'm also kinda meh on MGS although I need to sit down one month and play them all from start to finish. I know that whenever I do play them I love it but then I'm not really hankering to play them if I take a break.

I wasn't overly impressed with Uncharted when I played the demo. Figured it would be a rental only. Then a friend of mine, who had never touched the game before, took the controller and started running and gunning. Once I started playing with the run and gun and blindfire, instead of just stop and pop all the time, it became a day one purchase.
Also you should buy Heavenly Sword (that's right folks, "buy", not "rent". It's all of about £10 now over here which is only twice the price of a rental and it's a stunning game with brilliant production values).
While I'm up for trying a hack-and-slash, I do kind of hate Dynasty Warriors. Any similarities? Should I still go for the Black Friday deal at AMZ?

Reverend Dr. Galactus: for $14-20, I hear Heavenly Sword is a worthy purchase. If you're still unsure, there's a demo on PSN that's seriously short (and convinced me to not even rent the thing).
Edit: Muttonchops, I never thought to tally my PS3 collection (outside of comparing it to my PS2 collection). Let's take a peek...

Not paticularly similar at all. beyond the fact that in both games you attack dudes with a sword. Heavenly Sword is a slightly above average God of War clone that probably takes itself a bit too seriously.
Honestly, God of War 2 is the better game in basically every respect (arguably even visually, the art direction is leagues ahead of HS's bizarre oriental/medieval europe fantasy mashup) and its so painfully the game Heavenly Sword wants to be.

Agreed with all three.

Kittens give me gas.
Also, back on the Uncharted thing.. sure the graphics, production values etc are very nice but the bit where you play the game is still pretty average.
I have complaints about MGS4 too, like after every act it wants to reinstall the next act forcing you to sit twiddling your thumbs for a couple of minutes. The cutscenes are stupidly long, the very last boss fight is crap. But the game playing bit between all of that is pretty good.

Uncharted: Spoiler'd for large!
I've said it before I'll say it again - Uncharted stops being average as soon as you crank the difficulty. Then it becomes a real intelligent shooter with countless white-knuckle moments.
Now the obvious counterargument to this is "well, if it's only brilliant on Hard or Crushing it's not actually brilliant, is it? If it were simply amazing, the gameplay would still be amazing on Normal and Easy."
The only response I have to this is that gameplay is very good on Normal/Easy - it's never anything revolutionary. Hard Mode & Crushing are for Us and Normal and Easy are for Them, the casuals who went out and bought it 2,010,000 times. I know plenty of casuals who were singing Uncharted's praises long before I could ever understand wtf they were talking about. They beat it on Normal and Easy and loved it because of all the positives you mention - 'the graphics, production values etc', it's a rip-roaring lighthearted adventure the likes of which can't be found anywhere else on the current gen (from what I've seen).
Once I beat it on Normal I was prepared to say it's a very good game - but I didn't appreciate it as a masterpiece until I beat Crushing. Crushing takes that very good game and makes it absolutely classic, a series of 9.5s and 10s from the gameplay to the sound to the writing. It's lovely.
I understand the complaints about MGS4's between-Act installs (which take between 5 and 3 minutes), but if that's the price I have to pay for that level of polish? Bring it on.
I understand complaints about MGS4's cutscenes being omg-the-longest-we've-ever-seen. It's a 30 hour game that can be beaten in 5 if you skip the cutscenes, and as a longtime fan of the Metal Gear series, that game was like... where is that pic...? Ah, here. For Metal Gear fans that game was like this:
Which is why, for Metal Gear fans, the final battle was absolutely perfect and awesome. Because the final battle of every Metal Gear Solid game has been
two mighty soldiers, duking it out one-on-one, often hand-to-hand, on top of some epic piece of technology or otherwise gorgeous set piece.
There are a lot of complaints to be made against MGS4 - but they all fall by the wayside if you love the series, love the characters, love the traditions it sticks to. 'Cause if you love those things it gives you everything you want, everything you expect, and everything you never dreamed to hope for.
Edit: here's a quote from Gibb, who just posted on the MGS4 thread and has clearly been playing Metal Gear for as long as I have...
Wow, everything is worth it to see the ending of this game. For me its gone beyond a game and became this amazing experience. The gameplay, in my eyes, is perfect. Easily the most playable of all MGS games. (Because I don't have to grapple with the controls.) Admittedly the story does stray into goofiness, but that doesn't take away from the pure emotional impact. 20 years of Metal Gear and I couldn't think of a better conclusion.
Heres to you Snake.

You can press D-pad up as well, instead of R2.
Speaking of R2, I think it's easily the second-best multiplayer shooter I've played, right behind COD4. I love how both games have these leveling systems. If only R2 had all the sub-things to get like in COD4 (like headshots, so many kills with weapon x, etc.).
Uncharted's writing gets better on a harder difficulty? What?
Yes.
I think every game's writing gets better on a harder difficulty, though. If anything because you appreciate the writing more because chances are the writing is contained in a cutscene that was hard as hell to get to.
Ech, the writing doesn't get better - but it was a 9 to begin with. Not perfect (there were a few groaners in there - the plane catches on fire. Drake: "This is so not cool!" Yeah, not perfect), but in general the writing was great and better than 90% of the crap out there.
The plot hews very closely to Indiana Jones and classic pulp adventure novels so I'm more than prepared to forgive the occasional action-genre story cliche and enjoy the ride.

i'm generally hugely critical of game writing, but that in uncharted remains some of the best i've seen. it's wholly situated in its genre, sure, but that's a good thing in this case - because its such an unashamedly fun genre. the plot was considered, the dialogue snappy but rarely cliched, the characters fleshed out through their personalities rather than some stereotype or single, over-arching trait.
i think what makes the game so satisfying to watch as well as play is the theatrical direction and perfect voice acting. it really shows that they had good actors whose movements and voices were captured at the same time - the method creates some of the most natural and believable cinematics around. i love the subtlety of the characters' movements and body language, and you can really tell it has a human depth to it. much better than the kind of gangly puppetry with an attached .wav file that even the best-rated games tend to spit out at their low points
anyway uncharted is so much fun. i could talk for just as long about its gameplay mechanics, its story, its replayability - whatever. if you don't like it i'm not going to get upset, but for me its one of the best games ever
