Regarding the guns, I'm stil lon my 1st palythrough, but I'm already having to make adjustments to my thinking.

I've ditched the .10 pistol in favor of the .32, in order to maximize ammo usage. Also got a Chinese assualt, a hunting rifle, and a sniper. It seems like so much to be carrying around - I always carried one bow, and one short or long sword.

    Am I doing it wrong?

Nope. Even though I am all energy weapons, I still carry the Chinese Assault Rifle, Combat Shotgun, Hunting Rifle, and Sniper Rifle. You never know when they might come in handy.

Not at all, the purest joy in life is having as many weapons as possible on ones person!

    I carry around:

    *Hunting Rifle
    *Chinese AR
    *Sniper
    *Alien Blaster
    *A3-21whatever (harkness) plasma rifle
    *Fat Man
    *10mm SMG
*Repellent stick - eventhough I find it utterly useless.
    *>10 frag grenades
    *>10 frag mines
    *>5 pulse grenades
    *>5 pulse mines

Edit: Oh and the .44 Revolver of course! How could I forget that, it's my most priced possession!

I am a big fan of the android's facemelter gun. Increased rifle accuracy, increased head accuracy, better crit chance, more crit damage, 100 energy weapons and Tesla armor all mean a few headshots drops most enemies.

I do carry around a few other guns for special situations but for the most part Mr. Facemelter does all the heavy lifting.

Yeah I thought it would be cool, but without some contrast for visual cues it's really hard to find anything. There's a reason why computer monitors have evolved to millions of colors, and it wasn't just to play video games.

However, in game, I love the clackity sound of the terminal keyboards. Along with the whir and click that remind me of 5 1/4" floppies.

Yeah, I forgot the combat shotgun too, plus many 'nades. I do love me hunting rifle, so I think I'll be making a trip to get the Repeater soon.

In damage terms, quite the opposite of course is true. =)

    Also, in an unrelated discussion...

I don't like being in a wasteland, stumbling upon a gun, and thinking that it's not worth picking up.

    Well put =) I agree.

Yes well put. I guess there always has to be a peashooter though, right? The 10mm/silenced 10mm is also pretty useless. There's lots of useless stuff really. All foods except mirelurk meat, 95% of all armours etc.
I agree that food is just not really effective enough to be worth it (or is Mirelurk meat just too good?). I think most food (but not water, booze or cola) should restore about twice as much health as it currently does – even at the cost of extra rads. Speaking of which, radiation would be a lot scarier if:

    a) There were more radioactive spots - and they were more dangerous (1 rad/sec? please);
    b) There wasn’t Rad-X and RadAway in half the first-aid kits. I don’t mind finding that stuff in a hospital, military base or raider camp, but I think it should be much less common.

Stimpaks would probably benefit from a similar scarcity, and given their miraculous properties, I’d say they should cost at least 100 caps a piece.

I’d say that the problem with armour is that you get pretty good stuff almost immediately and with no effort. The riot armour + helmet from the Vault are actually pretty ok, and the Armoured Vault Suit is really quite excellent and will probably last you quite a while, as long as you don’t mind paying for repairs. The Raider armour that you encounter early in the game may occasionally offer 1 or two extra points of DR, but at that stage you’re better off with the extra 5 points in small guns (just shoot some Med-X if things get rough), and wait to pull combat armour off some Talon guys … or gun down a Tenpenney guard for his gear.

I think it would be cool if other types of armour were thrown in your path earlier, like by having an early-game objective/area protected by (for example) mercs or slavers in leather armour (instead of Raiders all the time). Alternately, throw in some high-level versions of the Raider armour that looks like the basic stuff but with a different paint job and stats, like with Combat Armour v. Ranger Combat Armour.

I would agree that food generally doesn't provide nearly enough HP to be worth it (or maybe it' sjust that Mirelurk meat is too good?). I think that most food (but not water, booze or Cola) should restore roughly twice as much health as it currently does. You could even jack the amount of rads you take; I'd still eat the stuff. I don<t bother now because you have to carry so much to gain any benefit!

    Precisely my thoughts.

I vent from: Vault 101 security armour -> Armourend 101 Jumpsuit -> Leather Armour -> Talon combat armour. That's the only good armour so far. And besides one find of each of the above (excluding 101 sec. armour of course) I've found hundreds of useless raider armours for example.

It didn't take me long to find combat armor, which is about as good as it gets until powered armor, but that dings your agility. I'm working on the quest for the unique combat armor and I probably won't even bother with power armor if it makes it harder to shoot.

Early in the game, I refused to wear Raider armor because I was afraid it would confuse NPC's with my good karma playstyle. Does anyone know if wearing certain types of armor affects people's responses to you? Besides the obvious ones with +speech or +personality or +charisma.

Man, I got worked last night while walking towards a destination in the far northwest of the map.

I’m jogging along and I see a red marker on my compass. I swing around and see it’s a radscorpion. I figure to hell with that, I’m not going to waste the ammo, so I just keep running.

Then I see another red marker and a molerat leaps through the air, just missing me. “Fuck him,” I think and keep going. I get another red marker as I crest a hill and get charged by a giant radscorpion. “Oh, crap” I say to myself. I use the downhill slope to jump over the monster and drop a bottlecap mine as a keep running. It goes off almost immediately, so I know damn thing is right behind me. Its left legs are crippled – unfortunately, so is mine. I hobble up a hill and turn, intending to finally stand and fight. As I do so, a Mister Gutsy starts shooting at me from 50 yards off. Meanwhile, behind me I’ve got TWO giant radscorpions, a regular one and the fucking molerat. In the end, the goddam robot shot me to death with plasma even as the radscorpions stabbed me to death with their stingers.

At least I took the molerat with me.

Well, I don't use the default parrot-on-your-shoulder third-person view because that one is, as you say, terrible. I pull the camera back aways and I find it's ok for walking around and stuff. Definately can't fight that way, though.

My first encounter with a Yao Guai was pretty awesome.

I see a red mark on the compass. As I get closer, I realize this isn't some pathetic mole rat or radscorpion, but something much bigger. It sees me, and begins the charge. I'm kind of freaking out because this thing is huge and I've never fought one before. I decide to pull out my shotgun. I wait until it gets close, and right as it lunges at me, I hit VATS.

There is it. Frozen in place, claws outstreched, ready to tear my head off. I'm thinking, "Man, Colbert was right about those fucking bears." I target its head with a shotgun and let fire. Two shots and it's head explodes and the body falls to the ground a foot or two in front of me.

The worst thing about Yao Guais are that the sneak up on me really easily. One time Dogmeat died because I didn't even realize he was being torn apart by a Yao Guai behind me. That got a fucking re-load all the way back to the autosave.

    Zone doors are no obstacle!

You know the old saying "If a tree falls in a forest and no one's around to hear it, does it make a sound"?

Well, if a Robo-Brain spots you outside and you zone into a building, does it still exist?

Yes, yes it does. Because it followed you in there and stuck its pincers up your ass.
