The character specific articles basically talk you through the balance process, I was reading them to find out the bottom line! So I'd read one thing and think "awesome" and then he'd say "...but that was too powerful so I took it out."
In fact a lot of them read "well this character was high tier so I made him worse! But then he was bad so I made him a little better. Also it was a big problem since he could <street fighter term> within 3 frames of guile's sonic boom so that had to be fixed. Thanks to HondaSephiroth69 for pointing this out to me!"
So let me get this right. You're reading the personal blog of a world-class Street Fighter player who's widely regarded as the world's foremost authority on video game balance, and it bothers you that he gets into geekish levels of detail on the process of balancing Street Fighter?
And, y'know... all of those "awesome" things he took out were nerfed so that big, burly men couldn't rape you for hours on end. If you go play SFII in an arcade for a while, I think it'll become abundantly clear within the first ten minutes why some characters needed a LOT of work.

By "awesome" I more meant "ok so that is how it works now".
This was before I learned to skip to the end/read the summary page to find out what is up!
However, I assure you that if his goal was to keep big burly men from raping me for hours, then he failed miserably.
edit: is he actually widely regarded as "the world's foremost authority on video game balance"? I read his page what seems like years ago and I only remember it being about how he really liked the placement of some donkey kong country items and also he was good at street fighter. Wiki says he's done 2 card games and puzzle fighter hd and this game. Is there more?
Dammit Capcom/SCEE! Why isn't this on the European PSN store yet? Could it be because Age of Booty just got released here and Capcom doesn't want SF to overshadow AoB's sales?
Anyway, to prepare myself for the eventual release of the game here, I've purchased 2 of these bad boys.
The saturn controller is, without doubt, my favorite 2d fighter controller.
I haven't gotten them in the mail yet, but apparently they work quite well on the PS3 and the buttons map perfectly.
Anyone here have any hands-on experience with the USB saturn controller on PS3?

Meh, some people really prescribe to his "Playing to Win" stuff. Maybe he's the most open about his ideas on balance, but I'd hesitate to call him the foremost authority on anything.
That, and I disagree with him on some fundamental levels. Other than that I suppose he does a good job.
Is there much in the way of single player content? I know that's not the point, but I'm sure I can't be the only person who hasn't touched SF in forever and doesn't fancy being raped on the world stage if they jumped back in now.

Let me know how those work out for you, I hate using shoulder buttons in fighters but I'm crap with a stick and don't want to shell out for two on the off chance it'll improve my game a bit.

Sure I'll keep you posted, but it'll probably be a while before I get them though. They're coming from china and it might take 2-4 weeks. I bought them on ebay on a whim, because apparently they were becoming hard to find (due to SFHD being released o_O).
Now, to find some more 2d fighters on PS2/3, I can play with these babies! Not to derail, but is the PS2 Kof collection decent?
The change to the commands on those moves for Cammy has done wonders. Its no longer a issue of "should I attempt this because I'm not sure it'll come out," the command doesn't limit its usage. Having said that, I'm have a lot of fun AAing people who over use it :P
Wow, so all it took to make Cammy a contender was to make her moves reliably performable.
Now if only E.Honda's hundred hand wasn't so goddamned annoying.
Atleast he doesn't slide across the floor like street fighter 2: turbo. I remember seeing that one year at a pax cooldown party.
And what do you mean by "decent?" They're just collections of the games as is, so if you liked them then you'll like them.
As notoriously horrible as SNK fighting game ports are, I don't blame him for being a little concerned.
BlueBlue, while Sirlin is a raging egomaniac (and I've maintained for seven long years that he's the biggest douchebag in gaming), his theories on game balance and competitive play are ubiquitous in any discussion on the topics. I've even seen his work cited in poker and weiqi circles. Thus respect where it's due, I figure.
Which one? And what do you mean by "decent?" They're just collections of the games as is, so if you liked them then you'll like them.
I meant the latest one, The Orochi saga. It collects KOF 94, 95, 96, 97 and 98
I know which games I liked, but I'm more concerned about the port quality.
Also, why does it seem impossible to find a PAL version of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 for the PS2!?

So far I am loving the game...although I'm much more rusty than I remember.
Also the online is full of "Jumper" or "Fireball" fighters, and I hate those that use cheap ways to fight rather than actually try and use skill. One guy I played used Bison, and only used his cheap fly across the screen attack. :x

There are no "cheap" tactics, just learn how to counter those attacks. :^:
Hmm I've won 6 and lost 2 so far. I was thinking that all the talk about the 360's stick being rubbish for this was a bit OTT. Maybe not though, I'm having trouble pulling off the dragon punch motion every time.
speaking of dhalsim, i cant for the life of me do his super consistently on a d-pad. if those saturn USB pads are legit i might order one for this. anyone have any experience with them?
A few people are wondering how the hell I'm able to do 360s while standing.
Well, get your ass in training and do this:
back, downback, down, downforward, forward, upforward, up + Button
The timing for it isn't that terrible, you just need to be quick. You might even be able to have it connect when you're on the upforward input. If you get good enough to pull it out the majority of the time, it's a great way to turn a fight around.
As for dhalsim's super, yeah, I've had problems getting that to register.

Ah, yes, on "playing to win" I am sure he is the authority - in as much as he wrote something about it. I will have to re-read his stuff to find out what his theories on game balance are. Since his theory on competitive play is "hey instead of whining maybe you should get better" I am guessing his theory on game balance is "it should be there".
edit - reading it more or less confirms this, though - when I read the character sections I had noticed the pattern of "<x> sucks so I <powered up some move> and then they were gamebreaking" and I thought that was kind of goofy how often it happened. As it turns out he was doing that on purpose (because if the move was just made ok to start with then maybe no-one would use the move, but if it were gamebreaking then it would get more testing).
I have to admit my opinion of him fell drastically as soon as I started reading his stuff again! The first thing I found was a condemnation of world of warcraft...for not being street fighter.
I have never really played SFII seriously, but I played Third Strike to death when it came out.
So, when I tried to apply my Third Strike skills to SFIIHD, it didn't work out so well.
I have a lot of work to do.

I've got mixed opinions about Sirilin. His videos are pretty useful, and I agree with some of his points. However, I do feel that there's a place for playing competitively and a place for playing casually.
In any case, I need to wait until I go back to school to download this, but definitely send me an invite if you see me playing this.

I'm assuming they're constructed the same as other saturn pads? If so, then they'll be good for HCF/HCB x2 motions. Shermie FTW!
ken was doing some crazy jump in kick then throw. if i blocked, i was thrown. he did it 5 times in a row. yeah, i know the counter is "don't block the kick," but still *whine whine whine*

If that guarantees Ken a win every time, shouldn't he do that?
What character were you using? There are plenty of ways to stop a jumping roundhouse, also if you recovered from the throw he wouldn't have enough time to jump kick again.

I thought they said Remix's easy was supposed to be less rape than the original but I might as well be fighting fucking David Sirlin myself.

if youre going to get anywhere with this game you have to get over this attitude as soon as possible.
Jump fighters are about the easiest to counter, but it doesn't make them any less annoying.
