Because ads everywhere cluttering up every screen except for system settings are much more preferable than having them in one easily skippable area in the dash.

Yay ads ads ads lets be apologists for them. At least the ads on the old dash weren't in the way, or taking up the almost entire screen when you boot the system. Now it's like some awful free website where you must look at the ads to proceed every time. Except I already paid for this system. It's bad enough that the NXE is a horrible clusterfuck that fails to offer the UI of either of the systems it's ripping off, but we get huge ads on start up as well. I'd much rather a small ad was in the background of the My Xbox section than the way they have it now, I've selected that bloody Lips ad instead of starting a game about 5 times already.

Unfortunately microsoft can't design around stupid users.

Turn your settings so that your games automatically start when you put them in or turn on the xbox. otherwise there is no difference from the old dash. before you still had to flip down to start a game. Or wait, were you here on the board complaining that you kept opening up your profile instead of starting a game back then?

I may well have it boot up the game instead, but I shouldn't have to make that choice on a system I've bought. Ads are suppsed to supplement free items, like TV programs, or websites, they shouldn't be an unskippable part of a paid system. It's like your oven asking you if you'd like to buy some cheese every time you turn it on. No damn it, I already told the toaster, I have enough cheese. People are far too ready to jump to the defence of ads. They should at worst be completely unobtrusive and in the background, like the old dash. Ideally, they shouldn't be there at all on a paid for system.

...wtf are you talking about? It IS skippable. Press the down button and shut up about it. If you don't like it, you're welcome to turn off your console.

Personally, I'm just fine with them using ad revenue to keep membership costs down.

Yes because I got this console for free, I've no right to comp... hang on a fucking second. You might be fine with unskippable ads on a paid system (one that also charges you for laggy p2p online, but that's another thread), but I've every right to expect the option to bypass them on a paid system.

You pay for Cable TV? Can you skip those commercials?

There's your solution. Pay for a console where you can skip/has no ads. And stop bitching.

It is what it is, man. If you don't like it, you have a vote. Your wallet. No one is forcing it on you. You don't like the ads? Then sell your xbox and buy a wii or something. The rest of us would like to talk about how awesome my blue haired avatar is now.

For me, I do get the different pictures when I navigate stuff like the videos menu, system settings, and a handful of other areas that I can't recall at the moment, but I know I have seen more than one picture for an old theme... though I do wish that I haven't made a point of downloading almost every free theme and gamerpic just for the sake of downloading them. My inventory is cluttered and gamerpics a pain to scroll through as a result.

Xbox Live got me to sign up for a Netflix account!

I watched a couple episodes of The Office the other night. Shweet! And I should be getting Casino Royale in the mail tomorrow. Multimediagiving weekend is GO!

The new Dash is pretty great. I love the party feature. My friend who is in the Army in Germany was playing Fallout 3 the other night and we partied up and just sat there talking while I went around killing Super Mutants. I mean, yeah, we could do that before with the chat features, but then earlier tonight I saw another friend playing CoD4. I flip over to the Friends section and the guy has an army of seven other avatars in tow. It's the first time I had seen that many in a party thus far.

Also I am against the adverts being right in your face, it should open to My Xbox without a doubt, i do find the odd advert useful as they are mainly Xbox related, although I question the need for them AND inside Xbox, they generally have the same thing. Chill out tho I mean stop throwing about UNSKIPPABLE!!!!111one etc, I mean there only unskippable if you forgot to turn your pad on, other wise press up or down, sheesh.

Interestingly, men of science did some research recently and discovered that adverts are just as effective when viewed on fast forward as they are at regular speed. Test subjects remembered just as much information both ways.

Not really relevant to discussion, I just like to mention that whenever we talk about adverts. I should just put it in my signature or something.

Maybe, as your obviously not impressed with the live service, you should stop paying, and unplug the ethernet cable/wireless from the back of your Xbox. This should stop them sending you adverts, then you can play system link/split screen and not have to worry about the "laggy p2p online" either. Let 'em know your opinion in the only language they understand.

As a side note, I don't think most people "own" there cable box, its rented from the supplier. I know this isn't the case with SkyHD, but it is with virgin and I believe most American cable companies (please correct me if Im wrong US peeps, I am interested in the subject at the mo).

They don't really look like ads so much anymore. They blend with the style of the dash, which has ratcheted down the eye-fuckery factor by a large degree. I have removed "Xbox Dashboard Ads" from the "list of things that will eventually drive me over the edge into a Michael Douglas-esque Falling Down bad afternoon"

Our cable company is a rent to own sort of bullshit for the box. After you've rented the box for long enough you own it, which reduces your bill a little bit, but if the thing breaks you have to start all over again.

Gotta love that, thanks for the info.

I'm sure they throw the killswitch about 5 minutes after you own it.

Does anyone else find themselves caring less about achievements in the NXE?

EDIT: Maybe it's because I'm playing a PS3 now too.

    nah. I'm still into achievements.

I still can't convince myself that buying a PS3 wouldn't just mean wasting space in my room. Like my Wii. It's not the price... it's just... the library (TO ME) is still meh. The trophies are a nice addition to their service, but eh.
