Ok, I have some ideas to make Home better. I do interface design and product management for a company that sells social software for businesses, and any time I see an online community spring up I geek right out.
The Good:
The concept. Meeting in a virtual world has the ability to create a more enriching, tangible feel to connecting with your friends / meeting people with similar interests.
Yes it can be viewed as a "hurdle" to get to what you need, but that's part of it, really. Home is trying to make the simple actions of playing a game, meeting with friends online, or watching movies engaging and rewarding. I think it has the potential to work.
The Bad:
Home needs to hold your hand a little more when introducing you to the community. It needs a few explicit goals and it needs to help you understand them. I think the "Club" is the best part about Home, honestly. It provides context to the user within the community– you are immediately among people who share a common interest.
Home needs to engage you with the people you already know automatically. The focus of Home should really lie here, not buried in some menu that looks and acts like the existing PSN interface.
Right now the point of Home feels like pimping out your current space and avatar with junk, because that's the context it gives you. It starts you in your apartment, teaches you how to place furniture, then tells you where you can buy more. This is not community-building in the slightest.
Anyway, I have to go catch my streetcar, but as a guy who does this sort of thing for a living, Home is an interesting case study.
A way this could work with the structure they have now is having your friends list work as different apartments in the same complex.

PaiZuri, that's fine and all, but see, I'm not actually a Xbox fanboy. I'm not a fanboy of any kind, but if I was, you bet your ass it'd be a Nintendo fanboy.
Guys, don't worry, I won't press the issue too much, I know it's wasted effort to argue with such an incredible idiot (his post was fucking hilarious though), but I've got just one tiny question:
How is the 360's avatar system a Mii ripoff and not Home?

The 360 uses cute caricatures of people. The Home system uses freakish uncanny valley people.

They need Home-specific tasks to earn clothing and decorations. Something involving connecting with others. Hide stuff all over the place that people have to find, then people will be asking each other where stuff is hidden today - it's a start. Introduce a scavenger hunt: find someone else from your state/country, find someone else wearing your same shirt.

So, Home is a Second Life ripoff?
With less custom content and porn.
And why are people disappointed now?
Speaking of Second Life, I thought Home was going to have furries? I wonder if that would have the opposite effect of the female avatar.

Listen, man, it's bad enough as it is now with the 3-4 girls per map being harassed by the 100 guys there, if they added furries, Home would just turn into an even larger gangrape than it is now.
I can picture it: The few LEGIT girls gushing over furries with their girl avatars, the guys harassing the girls sexually and the furries with insults, and the furries trying to have sex among themselves.
Oh shit. Home is debauchery at its maximum.
Another problem with Home, that I'm amazed hasn't been corrected yet:

You were supposed to be able to dress up in costumes. Ratchet was shown off in 2007. Speaking of which does anybody have the E3 2007 video where a ton of Sony's conference was about home?
I'm pretty sure I saw that I was promoted earlier, so if I was right and not just seeing wrong from squinting (So bright on such a bad TV) I'll take a wack at the application list. I don't know what the limit is now, so if I recognize a PSN, I'll add it first, just in case. And if it gets filled up, I'll be writing down PSNs and checking them out through here to try to weed out strangers.
And I don't know. I think something's wrong with me. I actually had fun with Saucer Pop. It seems like something I would really not enjoy whatsoever. I do have to say that I'm not a fan of the new Central Plaza, though. Or the Far Cry 2 spaces, even though the Train Depot seems to have a mini-game in it outside.
Edit: So I looked at the request list. Wow. I'll be slowly getting a list together of known forumers while I'm on (through the search function) to accept before I go to bed. Feel free to toss me a PM if you've applied and haven't been accepted yet, since, well, I'll know you're from here.
Aoi/Kirin you were right. My enthusiasm was burned away in a hot blazing fire of dissapointment and meh.
I did like the game rooms though .. Far Cry 2's room had a pretty cool map.
On the whole I think the system has potential but right now it's really lacking in content. I don't understand why it took so long to put this out considering how empty Home feels.

with yellow exclamation points above their heads
yeah
They should also allow you to stream video and stuff so you can watch movies with friends. :P
What it really needs is some sort of messaging space where you can leave gifts for people, write on a whiteboard, put stickers on their apartment door, etc. It should act more like a college dorm, where people leave notes for each other and can decorate their doors, which other people can still check out if you're not home. As it is, if you're not currently logged on in Home, you don't really exist.

And God help you if you were a woman – the groups of guys that would congregate around a female character were almost like flocks of vultures looking for a meal.
A friend told me that some of the suggested would choices for lol are: lol sparkling wiggles, loli and lol ffffffff. Can anyone confirm or deny this seeing as I can't get into Home.

Uh?
What?
I don't understand.
The PS3 uses word prediction when you're typing and it suggests words or phrases that may be what you're looking for. The phrases/words in my last post were apparently some of the suggestions that are put forth by the prediction system when "lol" is entered.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa? So, does it use other users data or something? Like, looks at what other people in home have typed, and then attempts to fill in the spaces based on what other users commonly are typing after the words?
Thats the only thing I can think of. There is no reason for any dictionary program that does that kind of thing to ever contain "lol ffffffffffffffff".
This, on top of the fact that I read it censors the "Hell" in "Hello" (****o!), and I saw it censored "meth" in the middle of some word I didn't even realize had "meth" contained within, but it escapes me now...

They had to have caught this shit before the open beta started.
Nope. "Hurry if you want to join the game" is "Hurry if you want to *******he game" now too, so they're checking for spaces. Good thing too, joint is so hugely offensive.
Don't you guys think that its ironic that even the "Quick Text" that THEY provide is being censored?

The funny thing is, I'm having a lot of fun with it.
I am certainly no PS3 fanboy, but I thought Tycho was pretty hard on PS Home. I think he needs to look up the definition of the word "beta". It's small and crowded now but as more game rooms come out it'll thin out.

Honestly, except for his Heavenly Sword comment, I think he's spot on and not even exagerating at all, EVEN for a beta. I've played much, MUCH better open betas. For free games on the net. You can't tell me that THIS is the beta for Home. Home was supposed to be this huge thing. This is just crap. Tiny crap. I do love the Harbour view and free Pool game, though. But so far, that's the ONLY good things about Home. I'd rather pay 5$ for a more robust online pool game on the PSN.

The phrase "open beta" when it comes to a free product is an oxymoron. Calling something beta should not be an excuse when people don't like your product. Whats-his-name compared it to google's "betas."
