which lineart looks the best? I used the pen tool in photoshop on the last one, but for some reason I like the lineart first on the left one more, I don't know why. It looks more organic, but I can't put my finger on it. Any theories?
Last one on the right is supposed to be the guy from oldboy.
I like the third one the best, but you're right, the lines on the first are more natural looking. You should see if you can freehand something like the last one, trying to get the same kind of sharp lines and contrast of hard and soft edges like you've got there, but incorporate a little more line variation like you get from the first.
Ah, okay. I *KNEW* it has something to do with line variation. I'll keep practicing. Thanks for your advice, Bacon.
I like your painting. It reminds me alot of Felwood in World of Warcraft because everything is kind of a green/brown.
What happened to your site storage, btw? You used to have alot more images then you do now. I ask because I used to look at them for reference on how you work.
Don't look. Just keep scrolling down until you've passed my post.
These are two of three portraits from class, following a medical theme. Also note I didn't have time to finish the second one. I've really got to get in to a regular drawing habit, I'm never going to get better this way...
His torso and head are really small... or his legs and arms are really long. The Japanese seems to read Jinsei... and the 'se' is really poorly written.
Yeah its the legs that are long I think, I could see that when I scanned it but I'm too lazy to do anything now.
What does Jinsei mean? Sorry about the poorly written part, I only had the one reference which I think I was fairly accurate to. I just liked the look of the calligraphy (Would that be the right word?)
Without kanji or a context to place the word in, it's kinda hard to say what it means. Unlike English, Japanese is full of homonyms; words that sound alike but are spelled diffrently. When a word is written in hiragana, as you did, it could be anything... what's gonna give it definition is Kanji.
Just in case you don't know what I'm talking about:
Hiragana is a simplified writing system.
Kanji is a chinese derived symbol system.
Writing じんせい could be the simplified version of writing the following kanji:
人性 - Human Nature
人生 - Life
仁政 - Benevolent rule (had to look this one in the dictionary, might not be acurate)
Well, I'm having fun after I took a hiatus from this board. Soon I'll have some stuff to drop in a thread and have you guys crit/flame me on. Until then, more practice. Practice practice practice.
The first character is definitely 'ji,' and I believe the second would be 'e' not 'n.' They look very similar, but 'e' has a bit of extra stuff on top, as follows:
ん (n) vs え (e)
That third one though... what the hell? It looks like a katakana 'sa' (サ), but hiragana and katakana are never used within a single word. It also looks like a backwards 'ya' (や). And that last one does look the most like 'i'.
In summary, I bet that's not even a word. I bet whoever designed the thing your ladyfriend got either used a font that substituted random Japanese hiragana and katakana characters for letters, or just arbitrarily picked a few he or she thought were cool and slapped them on.
needs some more attention paid to the cloak, face and hair.
Look at some cloaks or loose jackets or something.

Im no color expert, but this needs some work. The tank really blends into the background because there is nothing past the midtones. You need some lighter tones here and there. Imply the lightning as a light source, maybe. And while your at it, tone that lightning down, because it clashes with the main focus since its so bright!
Oh yeah. And it looks like you just used red and then moved the back back and forth on the slider. No bueno! Get some color variance in there, even if you want to keep it monochrome you can change the hues quite a bit, and they will still read as red.

yeah, there's nothing past the midtones 'cause I wanted it to be night like. So I tried not to go very bright. I'm not sure how to do night scenes without keeping the contrast low. The lightning does suck... I had no idea how to render it.
As for the hues I don't ever move the slider back and forth when pickin' colors. What I did was started with a gradient in the background between dark red and orangish yellow and sampled colors from the background as I went brighter.
And now that I've written that out I can see why that would make everything blend into the background.
Ah well, thanks for makin' me think more about it. Lesson learned.

I hate that <
Lexxy, have I ever told you that I love your input? After looking at that second character, I agree; it's be 'e'. However, the seccond character is so horrible I can't make it out at all.
Hah! Maybe it says Jessey! That would make me laugh out loud if someone tatooed this on their arm.

I like the lineart, but the colors are way too, muddy? I dont know, they need some more color in them
Thanks. I just barely got a toehold on anatomy and now there's this big fucking color mountain in front of me. *Sigh*.
Your stuff's awesome as always, Mr. Wakkawa. Especially the couple there; pretty sexy. Wait, is this the first one with a guy and a girl? Cuz most your work's usually got two ladies. Not complaining on either side.

Took me like 30-40 mins to do this. I have no idea. Looks kind of like Shadow of the Colossus.
Huh?
I thought it looked more like the Iron Giant.
Arn't the things from SotC fuzzy?
Hm.
Actually, pretty true. Guess it kind of does look more like a robot.
At any rate, I have no idea, it just popped out of my head.

Outside of the imperfection margin? I ask only because my friend specifically asked for a short girl. Also, how should I approach coloring this?

Err..I think I'll lengthen the legs a bot. Those arms would be a bear to rework:oops:
Well, I'll have to color it somehow. Can someone OC with me tomorrow and point out stuff as I color?
I like that Christmas ornament idea, Moss. It makes it seem almost 30% more whimsical than before.
