It's "oh he put me to sleep I'll use an alarm clock"
How is that a puzzle in any way
I'll give you a recent personal example of status effects and their role in monster difficulty that I found particularly challenging. My sig other and I were playing through a custom module on Neverwinter Nights (a pseudo-turn based simulation of the DnD 3.0 ruleset, basically). This is a module meant to be played from level 1 to whatever. We came across some mummies.
These mummies had two status effects that made them dangerous, although we did not know it the first time we faced them. They had an aura that caused the "Dazed" status effect, which was easy to resist but paralyzed you for 2 rounds if it did affect you. The other was a diseased attack, which caused you to lose points in Constitution and could not be healed by resting or simple curative items (it required a Lesser Restoration to fix, eventually), which meant a long trip back to town if you got hit (or worse, instant death). The first time we faced these mummies, we got Dazed and Diseased to high oblivion, barely escaping with our lives. I was playing a ranged character, but she was playing a head-on fighter, so this posed a bit of a problem. We eventually figured out ways to run around in the catacombs, taking pot shots and using our mobility to slowly whittle down their health until they finally died (again). We also figured out that they couldn't open doors (except by bashing them). We had a LOT of close calls (getting dazed occasionally would make everything go all pear-shaped) but we eventually succeeded over and over again, using different corridors against different groups.
The thing is that if we had rolled a cleric who can turn undead, the encounter might have been easier, or even trivial. But because of our particular power level at the time and lack of turning ability, we had to devise a strategy to kill it with minimal loss of life/resources. Even at the current point of the campaign, there are few challenges that were as exhilarating as those mummy fights. It was a puzzle, an obstacle, and one that took a lot of effort to solve. That's how status effects SHOULD be used.
EDIT: And it's a shame that we'll probably never see anything even remotely like it in a Final Fantasy game. Because why bother making intelligent combat encounters when you can brute force the darn thing with spells coming from your butt and swords that can cut time? And there's always ALWAYS a "Ribbon". *sigh*
EDIT 2: To be completely fair, you won't see encounters like that in most NWN modules either. This isn't an awesome module we are playing, but it does limit the cheese and prevents you from becoming overpowered too quickly, which makes many encounters a challenge rather than grind fluff.
It's "oh he put me to sleep I'll use an alarm clock"

It's as much of a puzzle as the enemies in Chrono Trigger. "This thing absorbs electricity, better not use it" isn't really any more brain breaking than "this thing uses poison, better get some antidotes"

Sorta out there, but someone mentioned they hated the "oil" status effect in XII because there was no counter part to it.
As Blind is to Eye Drops as Oil is to ____?
Well, apparently somebody just didn't visit shops very often, because I'm barely into the game and I've been able to purchase handkerchiefs which remove the oil debuff.

I said spell.
I'm not aware of any spell which cures oil. Knew about handkerchiefs.
Just like there's vaccine to virus, but no spell to cure it (although you're immune to it while bubbled. Took me a longass time to figure that one out).
I remember a bit about playing and finishing Legend 2. There were different types of characters with different gameplay mechanics. I didn't like the fact that becoming stronger was not very straightforward: Your characters didn't have levels they would just sometimes gain stats randomly after a fight. Or if you had a monster type character the only way he became stronger was eating monster meat and transforming in a different monster.
I think you just described SaGa Frontier.
That's how it was in Legend II too I remember! You had 4 characters and could choose from Human, Mutant and Monster types. I think you collected little orbs throughout the game. There was a lot of them and they had names. Near the end of the game you fought a god-like being in a tower. The only reason you could defeat him is because he was missing the "heart" orb which prevented him from being perfect.
Reminded me of this. It blew my mind when I saw this randomly happen on TV.
You know you're old and jaded when you realize the party's motivation for fighting the Creator is juvenile and entirely based on feelings largely rooted in angst regarding parental authority.

Yeah I was gonna say, that's a western RPG based on a western RPG ruleset. There's no way you'd see shit like that in a modern day JRPG

True, I suppose, but at least I have to figure out what every enemy's gimmick is as I fight them, rather than just seeing what status effect(s) they cast so I can use the right item(s) or just cast esuna. I think there's something to be said for mixing it up like that
I've been playing through Chrono Trigger and Super Mario RPG, and I have to say, I really like that status effects in both these games wear off after battle naturally, negating the necessity of carrying a bunch of items. When I played any of the earlier Final Fantasies, it seemed like after every stupid battle (later in the game, anyway) I'd have to go into the damn menu to cure a status effect. Really slowed the pacing of the game down...

Oh, and an update on the controller disconnect issue. I think I'm leaning back towards the game being the problem. Its just that its so specific. I've determined another rule by which the disconnects happen. Its only against human enemies, and especially if one joins the fight.
So when I was making my way down to save/meet Basch, it was horrible. When I was going to save Amalia/Ashe it was horrible.
Usually if it was just one enemy, it disconnected once, and that was it. If I was fighting one enemy and another guy spotted us and came over, I'd get about 5 disconnects before I could really start doing anything.
However, other dugeons like the ones with the mimics, or traversing the sandsea (yensa?) had 0 problems.
Well, I've decided that I'm going to try FFXII again, any tips to keep me from quitting and replaying something else in my collection?
Don't poach enemies, or atleast all enemies. You don't get XP (to my knowledge). Also, don't use magic around elemntals.
Personal thoughts - if you burnt out on one attempt, don't worry about taking out Hunts as soon as they become available. They can be difficult and time consuming. Find out where the quickenings are on the board early on and decide which ones your team will use. Get them really early on - for the early bosses, the quickenings themselves will give you a severe advantage, and for the rest of the game the MP boost is essential. Beyond that, the lower left of the upper portion of the License Board is where you'll want to burn most of your LP - don't bother spending them on weapons and armor your characters aren't going to use unless you're working towards something. Take advantage of the times when you have four characters to do hunts/level - your guest character doesn't take experience and is frequently very helpful.
1. You'll want a full map of the License Board so you can plan out every license.
2. Don't spend License Points for spells or equipment until you own said spells and equipment.
3. Don't worry about leveling everyone if you don't want to. It's perfectly fine to have one party for the whole game. The only time you may want to level other characters is if you plan to tackle the 5 or so hardest encounters in the game, none of which are in the story.
I think I got about 80%+ finished, including a healthy chunk of clan hunts, before throwing in the towel. It was just too long.
On a side note, I wish the Espers weren't so useless, especially considering how difficult it was to get a few of the choice ones.
Yo. Did so relatively recently, actually, and didn't start playing it until a few months ago.
Did all the hunts but the last one, all characters completely filled the License Board, and got at least a few of the ultimate weapons. Never did get all the Espers either, mostly because I simply couldn't kill the last one. It kept making itself immune to everything, so I'd have to survive for a while, then would make itself immune again before I could get off an attack. it was the most frustrating thing in the world.

Definitely pick out your party before hand.
I've decide to go with Ashe as my main physical attacker with swords and shields. Fran is going to be my red mage, and I'm not sure what to do with Balthier yet.
edit: I'm not sure how good you are with gambits, but don't be afraid to share them with us if you think they aren't doing what you want them to do.

I did, though the last... 29 hours were pretty much drudge work. I almost didn't but then I was like fuck it, the boss is right there, I may as well get it over with.
While Japan will get FFXIII this year, looks like the rest of the world will have to wait until 2010! My only guess is it might have to do with the 360 release (Final Fantasy Versus XIII may have a hand in the delay, too). Word is SE hasn't really begun to work on the 360 port or FFVSXIII as much as the main title, and if they plan to release all of these titles at the same time for both consoles, I suppose it's understandable. The FFVSXIII Official Site is little more than the main male character's profile on a black background. Not quite as much work done as FFXIII's.
Argh, fuck Tetra Master. I'm never going to be able to win a game. I've got five losses and one draw so far. I just don't get this game at all. I understand the bits about the arrows on the cards, but not the card battles. I always lose them. It must have something to do with the numbers (1P00, for instance) on the cards, but even then I keep losing. I've had cards with 22 versus 12 and I still lose.

Will Advent Children Complete have English subtitles at all? Do Japanese DVDs/Blu-rays ever have English subtitles? I'm tempted to import, but I don't really want to if I won't understand it at all (a translation guide would get me through the XIII demo but I'd like to be able to watch ACC...)

I beat it. Haven't finished all the optional stuff yet, though. My stubborn refusal to use a FAQ for anything means that a lot of things take forever to find, I've spent over 100 hours on the damn game. Since I beat the game I just turn it on every month or so and finish up a few side quests or hunts or whatever.
I find that planning out your license board stuff is only remotely necessary at the beginning. Once you get those items that double LP on Mt. Bur-Omisace you pretty much never have to worry about it again. I had everyone's license board fully maxed out before I beat the game, I think. The license board was a pretty crappy system overall. I wish we had gotten the Zodiac Job Edition or whatever.

Those first two are not true, but I have a question about the third
Is there gonna be one of those annoying parts where I have to play through part of a dungeon to rescue the useful characters with my lame low level party of Ashe, Basch, and Penelo?

I think your max MP is doubled if you have two quickenings, and tripled if you have three.
This is correct. The first quickening does nothing for your MP.

On the upside, the FFXIII demo that is included in Advent Children Complete should be over 90 minutes of gameplay. That's ridiculous! Since the demo is going to be on BR, it's unlikely to be region locked, so importing may not be a bad idea as there is no current plan to release a demo outside Japan.
