Determine XP Service Pack Version Remotely?

bombardierbombardier Moderator Mod Emeritus
I'm looking for ideas on how to determine what Service Pack remote computers have, more specifically ones that are on the same network but not a part of the domain. I have to update all users to SP3 and while AD does show the service pack version, my only option is to call each workgrouped user to find out their version.

Also, any ideas or systems to organize and inventory all company computers would be helpful.

The only way I can think of off hand is snmp, assuming its installed/configured on the client machines. (snmp should *always* be configured on business computers imho but sadly it rarely is, mainly due to the guy who made the images having no idea what it is in my experience)

edit: just to clarify when configured correctly snmp will tell you everything from what OS machines are running, to their hardware status to what programs are installed

You could do it with a WMI tool, I use a free tool called WMI Asset Logger, it should be able to get the info you need.
