    I've been getting these scattered throughout the past week, but it seems that there doesn't seem to be any major interest in the info. If there actually is I can start keeping track, though.

    Bingo.

    I was trying to come up with a set of times that it would normally happen and figure out if maybe an automated task was the culprit. I couldn't find any correlation there, so I did the next best thing and bought some more gear. The optimizing the inner working of vBulletin is not how I would like to spend my time.

    Have you checked the times with access logs? Maybe that's when Google or another spider is indexing the forums.

    I got one at 6:30 PM ET, then it came back up at 6:31, then went away until 6:33.

    It is a bit difficult as the forums share their MySQL server with all other PA sites (mainsite, ads, CP, PAX, etc.)

    Once our 2nd database server arrives, we are going to move to multi-master replication setup. I'll keep the mainsite, ads, and a few sites hitting the new server which lets the forums take up a larger portion of this server.

    I found the culprit. A PHP script in a virtual machine updates a set of indexes every half hour.

    I can't turn it off, but it should go away when the new gear gets installed.

    Good news! The new database server passed burn-in and Dell is shipping it to the datacenter.
