Help with purchase of a new television

Hello oh helpful forumers. I could have sworn there was a giant topic on this but have checked the accumulated knowledge thread as well have tried a search with the only recent results being a 32-37" and a dorm room sized TV thread. So with that said I figured I'd start my own topic to ask the all important question of "Can you help me spend my hard earned monies on a good TV?"

Last TV I bought is a 51" Toshiba rear-projection 51H83. I love it but there are a few issues that have myself and significant other wanting to buy a new one. Namely, it is too big for our living room (mostly in terms of footprint, not screen size). It's like having an elephant in a small room. I got the model before Toshiba started introducing models that you could easily split into two pieces to move (or the models that can sit on a TV) so it's also a pain in the ass to move. Also, it has no HDMI port so if we want to upgrade to beautiful 1080p blu-ray we are SOL.

So we are looking at probably around a 42" (this is not a concrete number, if we can get a bigger screen at a good price then awesome!) in the $800-$1200 range (can be a little flexible on this but not "How about this $2000 dollar model?"). With technology having improved would you suggest LCD, plasma, etc (projector unfortunately isn't an option)?

I'm also looking at online reviews and what not, just wanted some more personal "Hey, I own this TV and it's awesome" advice then a standard review would offer.

tl;dr: help me pick a 42" or greater TV at a price of around $800-1200. Thanks!!
