I second the drop into San Diego. I work at this magical wonderland of fishes and water based mammals called Sea World. You may have heard of it, though I may not be working there by the time you get here. Nonetheless, I'll probably have some free tickets lying saved up and you can check out the ever so tuxedo-like Shamu and Penguins.

There's also the "World Famous San Diego Zoo", Balboa Park, the Wild Animal Park just to name a few others.

Let me know when you're stopping anywhere between Monterey and San Francisco when you're going through CA, I'd love to get in on that get-together. I'll definitely be at PAX '09 as well.

BTW, unless you're really planning on checking things out between California and Seattle, you might want to consider taking the West Coast Train Trip to PAX. We throw a wild party.

Are you coming to long beach? Of course you are, who skips southern california on a big tour of america? It's in between LA, Orange County, and Disneyland?!

Anyways, this town is the shit. If history floats your boat, my gf and I could take you to a couple historical landmarks here in LA. Theres uh disneyland. Pinks Hollywood hotdogs. Museums, a very big art museum (the getty) if that is your thing.
I dunno, I am rambling and it's late.
LA and Long Beach are awesome. Did I mention that?

    Roscoes chicken n waffles?

Oh and you probably couldnt tell by my amazing online persona but I am a 21 year old history student. My GF and I roll in a pair, but we never third wheel anyone, I consider us amazing ambassadors to our awesome city. Were not really the WOOO party type(contrary to what I seem like online), more of the scholarly type. Foods and museums and music.

I'd just like to give you a thumbs up flippy. This is a very cool idea, and I hope you'll enjoy your trip!

I should probably work on my forum cred so that I can try to pull this off in a few years. I'd show you around my town and even offer you a couch, but you seem to be unaccountably avoiding Sweden on your trip through America.

Holy shit you're passing through New Orleans?

Let me know and maybe we can grab some cafe au lait and some beignets.

But seriously, stop in and take an entire day's walk around the french quarter, stop by the New Orleans Museum of art, and take a drive around the area to see how alot of neighborhoods are still devastated three years after Katrina.

The Audubon Zoo is nice as is the Aquarium of the Americas, the local zoo & aquarium, though I don't know how much it'll differ from any zoos you've already been too. The Aquarium is nice for their Gulf of Mexico exhibit, however.

Edit: Unfortunately I'm still in my early 20s and not quite out of my parents' house yet so I don't think I'll be able to offer you a place to stay, and I don't know how much of a tour guide I'd be because I'm no historian...

    http://www.fodors.com/world/north-america/usa/louisiana/new-orleans/sights-nam.html

There's a good list of sights to see in New Orleans.

As far as food goes, New Orleans has some of the best food in the US, but alot of the good restaurants are very expensive so I don't know what I'd be able to reccomend there.

Whoa wait you're in New Orleans? We should get together and smash some bros or rock some bands some time.

Well, this is an interesting experiment in ad hoc social networking and trip planning only possible via the internet.

Las Vegas local, reporting in. The fact that you don't drink or want to hit up clubs makes things so much simpler. Every single casino in town has at least one and often times multiple night clubs.

    Things unique to Vegas:
    • Hoover Dam and Lake Mead. You'll probably be driving over it to get into town so you might as well stop a while and take the tour.
    • Casinos. There's a ton of interesting architecture here, just don't expect to see anything old. Las Vegas has a tendency to literally blow apart our history to make room for new megaresorts and strip malls. These are divided into two subsets, tourists and locals casinos. Those off the Strip are more inclined to the locals and offer better paybacks with a little less intense atmosphere. But they offer less of the glamour and attractions that the big ones have.
    • Shows, these usually get a bit pricey but we do have quite a variety from Broadway hits, magicians, medieval combat dinner theathre, Cirque, comedians, and basically very elaborate stripteases.
    • Prostitution, if you're into that sort of thing. It's the only legal place in the union but you'll have to make a trip out of the county. That's all I know, because I don't know of a single person who's ever gone out there.
    • Red Rock Canyon has some pretty decent hiking, bouldering, and mountain climbing if you're the active type.
    • Las Vegas Motor Speedway. In addition to NASCAR (really boring racing in an oval for several hours), every other Friday is open to local drivers to run drag races.
    • Nellis AFB. Unfortunately, I'll probably be out of town when you're planning to come, but if you can find someone that's either active or prior duty, they can get you on base and show you around. Because it's an Air Combat Command, they're constantly running training exercises and fighter jets are a common sight around that area.
    • UNLV. The local university and my alma mater. Nothing really historic here, unfortunately.

    Stuff to Avoid:
    • The Springs Preserve. A nature themed center of education that is absolutely a waste of money. Both for the attendees and the city.

As a side note, make sure to get in contact with TehSpectre and do some urban exploration with him.

Guess what's in Orange County, California? Disneyland! And for $50 bucks you can get... Uh... you can get to watch all the people who are willing to pay more stand in line for tickets. Maybe not such a good idea. But if you do want to surrender your soul briefly to the Mouse, I can give a bang-up tour, having spent much of my childhood roaring around there.

This is a very good idea actually. I was raised in OC and have my season pass lying around somewhere. If you add Disneyland to your agenda we should see how many of local PAers can make it out. We can make a day out of terrorizing the happiest place on earth.

I dont live in Michigan anymore, but I spent the better part of my life (first 12 of my 17 years) there. My advice is definitely hit up Macinack Island (SP? god i cant believe i can't remember how to spell that, anyways its pronounced Mack-in-awe). Its a quaint little Island between the Upper Peninsula and the lower peninsula. No cars are found on the island so its either a bike or horse if you want to move about. Great place, possibly one of the biggest attractions of Michigan to my knowledge. Theres a French fort on the island as well as a British fort on the Mainland. Great place to visit in the summer. Also, if you do pass through that area and you see a Kilwin's Candy shop STOP IMMEDIATELY AND BUY FUDGE.

However, if this does get pushed back and ends up not happening this summer, but happens at any point after August of '09, then I will be able to guide you around a small part of Southwest Virginia. If not however, I guess I must retract my offer of hospitality.

Since it looks like you're going through Pennsylvania I'd suggest going through Gettysburg to learn how we shot each other up for a couple years and to Philadelphia if you want to learn how we shot you up for a couple years. Then there's also Hershey, where you can see chocolate and/or how much we love it, along with Hershey Park, and amusement park dedicated to chocolate.

We also have alot of nice trees/parks, but other than those things it's pretty dull here.

Get yourself a buffalo burger/some jerked hearts(if they have them, one can feed you for an entire day, and if you have pets they will love you forever for giving them one.) and a rattlesnake cane with open mouth and the real fangs intact.

DO NOT GO TO HERSHEY PARK FOR MORE THAN TWELVE HOURS:It's right next to Three Mile Island and also the smell of chocolate will never be appetizing again.

So when exactly in the summer?

And whenabouts would you be in the D.C. area? All kind of stuff to do here.

Yeah, there are crackhouses, escort services, human smuggling rings, new agers, murderers, drugs, drug dealers, pimps, and the White House, Obama's presidency will soon make D.C. a tourist trap again, so you will also have to deal with humanity at large D:.

I'd much rather go to Newark for thirty hours than go to DC.

It would be spent looking for my luggage and getting into a safe cab to get the hell out.

Don't go to Albequerque.(traffic, traffic, traffic.)

Or Pheonix.(you will get the feeling that you have been circling around the city for ages going slowly down into a goddamn spiral around it, you have , also, prepare to have your rental's paintjob ruined by sand becoming glass on the hood of your car, also, in your engine.)

Also, your upholstery will be ruined by the various bodily fluids that pheonix can wring out of you in the summer.

Hey, Flippy, if you reroute your trip out of texas and into oklahoma you can: avoid Arizona, albequerque, go to the ruins across from my house, where I will be volunteering to run tours durin the summer, go to the Oklahoma diner, see the WORLDS LARGEST MCDONALDS.

Go to El Mael Paies(whatever) and tapdance on an extinct volcano(warning, this may cause death), you will be on the side of a fucking cliff, looking down at the obsidian road, and the forest it runs through, seeing hundreds of miles of beautiful woodland, with trees older than Christ.

And unless the town of Hershey has had it's production outsourced, the smell is still unbearable for half a mile around the town, and when you are in the town/inside the park not even closing the damn windows and turning the AC off can shield you from the chocalate radiation.
