Asian MMO specialist Netdragon Websoft is to build and launch Dungeon Keeper Online, a massively multiplayer re-interpretation of Bullfrog's much-loved strategy series:
NetDragon Websoft Inc., a leading game developer and operator in the People's Republic of China announced a new licensing agreement with Electronic Arts Inc. on the development of the Group's first 3D massively multi-player online role playing game based on Electronic Arts' "Dungeon Keeper" line of games - including themes, characters and other game content. As part of this agreement, NetDragon will develop the game and obtains the exclusive license to operate and distribute Dungeon Keeper Online throughout the Greater China region, including Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau.
"We are delighted to enter into an agreement with EA in the development of our first 3D MMORPG. Our partnership with this internationally renowned game developer is proof of our capabilities in game operations and development as well as a reflection of our market reputation," said Mr. Liu Dejian, Chairman and Executive Director of NetDragon. "Capitalizing our strength to create a strong gaming experience, powerful operating platform and unmatched expertise within China's online game market, we are confident that Dungeon Keeper Online will not only become successful in the Greater China region but also achieve remarkable results overseas."
Jon Niermann, President of EA Asia Pacific said, "The partnership marks a significant milestone for EA as it will enhance our intellectual property and extend our product reach throughout the Greater China region. It will also further enhance our intellectual property with differentiated, high-quality games, particularly in the field of MMORPGs."
On one hand: I love Dungeon Keeper.
On the other hand: oh my fucking god a fucking Chinese mmo.

What?
Really?
Damnit, EA, you know better than this. I mean, a Chinese MMO? Is that really the best way to exploit the Dungeon Keeper license?

I thought Dungeon Keeper was dead forever. If this is all I can get then I'll take it.
naknaknaknaknak
For sanity's sake, I'm going to pretend I didn't see this.
So China has some problems and doesn't handle them as well as they morally should; so does America, only more modern and trixy about it. My life is a hundred times safer here and the people are incredibly friendly. I can't say that about any city in shit-hole north america.
China has a lot of software companies and a lot of intelligent people working at them. There is no reason why they don't have a chance to put out a quality MMO, and hopefully with a new angle.
America is going downhill fast and China is climbing up and over the poor fuckers sliding down on their asses.
Umm...I think it's more of gameplay issue than a "fuck China" issue. Asian MMOs are notorious for their ludicrous amounts of grinding.
American McGee, is that you?
(Please do not gift. My game bank is already full.)
Honestly, it has nothing to do with the "Chinese" part of the equation. A Dungeon Keeper MMO is a Bad Idea no matter who's developing it, except maybe the original team.
And even then, it's a profoundly stupid idea.
You take that back, Greenland is a very nice place.
Those two statements can actually work together. Figure it out.
I've only waited ten years for DK3...
This is a terrible idea.
Couldn't we have DKDS instead?
This is
How the hell will you keep a dungeon online? Vast underworld? This is so confusing
Dungeon keeper 1 is my favorite game of all time. I don't know what to feel.
but I don't think it is, so..wtf.
Also:
Brilliantly played. If it actually is American McGee, then stop putting your goddamn name on every game you touch! It's really annoying, and as long as your games continue to kinda suck it just makes you look bad.
Maybe they were just as perplexed as everyone else and said "Fuck yeah, give it to them. I want to see what happens!".
Unless EA were just giving it away.
But what the fuck, surely EA own/publish some studio that could do this properly.
Translation from PR speak: if it becomes the next WoW we'll probably bring it over, but otherwise we can't be arsed.
Really, if they had any serious intentions to bring it over here they'd actually have plans to do so.
Unless there's a like a huge DK fanbase in China.
Considering how much EA cares about old Bullfrog stuff, they probably sold it to them for a buck fifty.
He has said at length many times he doesn't want his name on anything but the publishers enforce it in publishing contracts.
Also, the Grimm tales games were alright. His games are not unusually bad like say, um, anything made by Gamecock.
Considering he's had three or four publishers during his extended ego trip and I doubt that ALL of them want to slap the name of a guy 99.993% of humanity wouldn't recognize on the box, I call bullshit.
And I said kinda suck. Grimm's a good idea but the execution's lacking.
Im not defending him or anything, but he did sound pretty genuine when he was on the 1up show.
I mean hell, if my name was American McGee id wear a t shirt with that written on it 24/7 because I can do anything I fucking want, I have the coolest name in the world.
The interesting thing in that link is that the company previously made an MMO version of Heroes of Might & Magic, which is seemingly just Heroes of Might & Magic...online. So perhaps we shouldn't write this off as a typical Chinese MMO just yet.
I'm still pissed it's not Dungeon Keeper 3, of course.
A Syndicate sequel has been rumoured to Starbreeze - if it turns out to be true I'd say it's in capable hands!
I love China and hope to go there someday.
