The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
So I'll have my MA from U of Chicago at the end of this year, and I need to make some plans for my "gap year."
I'm still not sure if this whole professorship thing is something I can deal with - at least the politics of it.
While I (re)apply to phd programs, I think it'd be cool to get a little teaching experience under my belt. More and more I'm thinking of teaching high school not as a backup, but as something that could be kind of fulfilling.
Where do I start? Does it blow goats? Would you let me near your children?
Because fuck if I'm going to teach a group of uneducated fools.
But when I find amazing talent and can give my level of skill to it? Fuck fucking yeah.

Try to teach AP/IB kids, they're a lot more smarter and motivated although you will get ones who aren't (speaking from experience of being in AP/IB classes)
i'm a master's student right now (math) and teach a precalc class of mostly freshmen college students
it's ok, pretty frustrating sometimes

Kids are jerkoffs who will do nothing but either try to ingratiate themselves to you or circumvent everything in the laziest, stupidest, most frustrating way possible
And any of them smart enough to be worth your while are likely to be weiners

as an AP/IB kid, ramen noodle is sure he is much more smarter than you
try to get work at a notorious inner city school where the kids need a teacher with a fresh attitude and a new way of teaching for them to practice their stabbing on

Yeah, as much as I hated my IB middle school and governor's high school, having the latter on my college application did wonders to make up for my gpa of like 1.9
ap was pretty good, got me out of a lot of college prerequisites
I just discovered this
I took the tests pretty much just for the hell of it, but I found out last week that my scores on those AP tests are going to save my ass and let me get out of this crappy junior college in 2 years even though I really fucked up this first semester
so I love AP tests now

I wish to God I had taken AP classes in high school or more classes at the community college last year
Trust me when I say you will be so happy to skip a lot of 100 level classes in college
You can also check out community college teaching. It's good money without as much bullshit.
Yeah, I was thinking about this too. AP is kind of out since I hated AP as a teenager, and preparing a bunch of little shits (no offense) for a test all year is not my idea of awesome.
I was thinking of looking around at charter/private schools, so I wouldn't have to stick to the state's ass curriculum. Then again... private school kids.
The main problem I have with teaching high schoolers is that despite the fact that I really am trying to do nothing other than give them a taste of my skill set so that they don't have to go through the stupid that I had to go through to get to my point of understanding and help music as a whole, invariably the girl will want to bone me.
Dammit girl you are 16.

Just don't teach a catholic school
One hundred and fifty boys thinking about football and dipping in class
i didn't have to take any english, econ, science, math or foreign language classes thanks to ap (though i majored in math and minored in italian so the last two didn't really help)
though for some reason boston college didn't give history credit for us history, only modern european, that was pretty dumb

I'm getting a Masters in Ed, and student teach this spring. 6 weeks at a middle school, 6 weeks at a high school
I've done a lot of observation and TAing, and have actual taught a few classes so far. I think I like the middle schoolers more so far.

Middle schoolers? Really? Maybe it's just me, but I cannot for the life of me imagine actually being able to impart the level of knowledge required to mean anything to people that young.
