I never saw the lack of child killing to be that much of a big deal, but after going through little lamplight I really wish I had that option. Little brats! You just wait. The mod is coming, I'm sure of it. So you can just keep counting the days until I come back with a supersledge and teach you to respect your elders!
I'm in a bit of a bind fellows, it's my first playthrough you see, first Fallout game for me entirely...
I told Mayor Simms about Burke's plan to blow up Megaton, but I also tried "talking" to him right as he confronted Burke. It resulted in the two men quietly and mechanically stepping outside, where Simms suddenly died. Is this normal, or a glitch? Was Simms SUPPOSED to die in a scene I just cut short?
What happened was
as Simms was taking Burke outside, Burke pulled a silenced pistol and shot Simms in the back.
It is possible to save his life though.
if you react fast enough inside the bar it is possible to save Simms life, damn hard, but possible. You have to do this before he leaves the bar, and after he turns red, ie, becomes an 'enemy'. Normally Burke shoots Simms inside the bar, it may have glitched on your version, this is why I recommend constant saves, and never to rely on autosaves.
Try doing it with a baseball bat because you didn't have a gun yet (playing small guns)
Blow 3dogs head off, his headband gives +1 luck +1 per.
I may save that for the Evil playthrough.
Random thoughts:
- Seriously, Walter, again with the swan dive off the railing? Look, I understand that fixing the water plant all the time is boring, but cut that shit out. Scrap metal isn't worth shit anywhere else.
- Holy hell breaking into the basement of the Wheaton (?) Armory was worth it.
I already have Guns & Ammo coming out of my ass, and giving the metal to Walter has been netting me caps + XP + Karma (I think?) so I'm just going that route.
Besides, Dogmeat lives in Megaton, so I need to make sure his water bowl is fresh and clean.

So the Outcasts take scrap metal as well? That seems odd. I have loads of it, and should probably pawn it off on them. They keep me in steady supply of frag grenades. I'm getting super antsy though... I really want to know what's in Fort Independence, and can't decide if I should pick the lock, pick his pocket, or blow his head off.

I am approaching the 50-hour mark. I have done very little on the main quest (I just left the memorial. You know which one.) I have had a TON of fun. I can see myself playing another 20 hours for sure, and will likely keep going as long as there are fun places to explore and fun things to do. I've had hours and hours and hours of awesome.
So if I understand it correctly, once I finish the game I'm supposed to suggest the game is a failure because the ending is not awesome, correct?
I just want to know how I should spin my indignation.

You lament the ending and then never finish it again. It doesn't diminish the rest of the game... well, at least not a lot.
How do you tell how many hours of your life have been sucked away playing this game. I'm afraid to look but I feel I should know somehow.
Also, still playing with the RobCo robot perk. Having 4 robot buddies and Paladin Cross is just freaking overpowered. I rarely have to shoot. The only time I nearly died was when I got a sneak attack crit from a Deathclaw. Fucker jumped me while I was looking in a locker and thwapped me on the back of the head. By the time I turned around to see what hit me my robo army was giving him a broadside lasers, plasma, and fire. I really should stop using the robots, but I can't. It's too much fun watching laser battles between my group and a half dozen enclave. The biggest balance issue is that they seem to repair themselves after every fight. It would make more sense to have to use parts to repair them more often.

Yeah, this. The ending is nothing to cry home about, but if you were to play only the story mission it would equal... anywhere from 4 to 10 hours of play. It's a drop in the bucket compared to everything else.
Honestly, I thought the story was good, just incredibly rushed. If they'd included a few more quests at key points, they could have provided a lot more detail.
I want a mod in which you can wrap your character in a weapons ammunition. Ie, grenade belt, plasma grenade belt. Also the ability to impale skulls onto your armour. Oh, and the ability to put any armour on Fawkes.
You are aware that weapon ammo is shootable, right? I've blown up more than one raider by shooting the grenade they were about to throw.

Oddly enough playing this gives me a strange urge to play Oblivion again. Of course, I'd play it with Oscuro's mod but I could never get started with it. Didn't like having to kill rats in the sewers before I could do anything. Part of me wants to make a wizard character so I could collect random crap in character, but part of me wants to make a melee guy because HE'S HACKIN AND WHACKIN AND SMACKIN. See, now it's on topic!
Hey, so I just started playing this and I'm getting this weird bug where sometimes the screen will start flickering between the game and the crap on my desktop. Anyone know what that's about?

Protector Casdin of the Brotherhood Outcasts, is a much better option than Winthrop and is located in Fort Independence. He will trade 12x 5.56mm ammo, 1x Stimpak, 1x Rad Away or 2x Frag Grenades per 2 units.
Does he take scrap? I thought he just took laser/pulse weapons and power armour.

So we can all agree that the story is rushed and short yes?
How would you extend/change it? Out of curiosity here.
Well, let's see...
The death of your father occurs way too soon after you find him. That's where I would've inserted something, though what exactly I'm not sure. I expected needing to do one or two treks across the wasteland for him, meanwhile discovering more things about him, his past, and his personal life. The audio tapes in the Jefferson Memorial were a great addition, but specifically I wanted to learn more about my mother. What was she like? Why did he cheat on her? That kind of thing.
The final march to the Memorial, while a very cool moment to watch, was pretty boring. As much as I enjoyed Liberty Prime, I did not want him trudging across the wastes eliminating all the Enclave in my way. I would've much preferred to do that myself, and to have a myriad of quest options based on certain skills. If it is not a cutscene, I expect to participate meaningfully in the game.
At the very least, I would've inserted another quest where I and the Lions Pride need to retrieve some important McGuffin in order to power Liberty Prime, taking us deep into the bowels of some irradiated super mutant home base. Should be tough as fuck, and essentially the real climax of the game. We get all this crap about how they don't have a strong enough power source to get the robot going, and then conveniently just before the final battle he's working again.
Those are two big things off the top of my head that would've breathed more life into the main quest for me.
How do you tell how many hours of your life have been sucked away playing this game. I'm afraid to look but I feel I should know somehow.

Wait, what? How do you get an army of robots?
There's a mod you can download that gives you the "RobCo Certified" perk, which allows you to fix robots using scrap metal and fusion batteries.

This in particular bugged me.
The Brotherhood guy's whining about how Liberty Prime isn't even ready for a field test, let alone a live-fire mission, and then the thing performs absolutely flawlessly. What the hell?
Wow, easily one of the best games I've ever played. 50 hours never went by so fast. I purposely went the nice route and didn't explore many areas on the map so I could play an evil female and have more to explore on the second playthrough.

The point of a field test is to find any flaws and fix them before putting it into service. You might get lucky and there be no flaws. They did.

Which makes for a pretty anti-climactic ending.
...not really.
Two steps outside of the Citadel Liberty Prime overloads and shuts down. "See, told you we should have field tested! Back to the lab!" *wait 2 months* "Okay, lets try this again!"
Yeah, that's a much better way to do it. Makes more sense.
I guess I'm alone, but I thought that part was perfect. I was all "AMERICA FUCK YEAH" and was kicking some Enclave ass.
See had I designed this you would have had to do this without liberty prime, unless you were a character who specialized in repair or science and came up with a eureka on how to fix liberty prime for them (in my mythical version of fallout 3 you cant have max in almost every skill). Every other main quest objective would have a way of defeating it without your character having to defeat a thousand enemies bent on your death.
Also YOU WOULD BE ABLE TO SEND FAWKES INTO THE RADIATION CHAMBER TO ACTIVATE THE FUCKING PURIFIER, and maybe trick him into plugging the mutagen into it as well for some awesome mutant dooming mutant irony.
The main quest of Fallout 3 starts rolling downhill just after vault 112 and continues rolling until it goes off a cliff. Seriously Bethesda wtf? Your sidequests are more interesting.

Actually that brings up a decent point.
Why was there any kind of rush to stop the Enclave? They weren't going to destroy the purifier, they were going to use it to gain political control over the entire capitol wasteland, but with their base destroyed what was the hurry in defeating them? Why not just wait until they finished getting the thing working and *then* take it back? Wait till they start distributing their water and try to assert control and make your move when they are spread more thin?
The entire reasoning for the assault seems flawed.

Sigh... that's not what I meant. Either you're ignoring things I said earlier, or intentionally twisting my words.
As I said before, when I have active control in a game, and some object out of my control is completing objectives for me, I find that anti-climactic and uninteresting. This is the video game equivalent of the deus ex machina. It's an easy out for the writer.
I mentioned that I enjoyed the sequence. It was fun to watch. But I am not playing this game to watch NPCs do things for me. If this happens enough, it stops being a game and starts being some other form of entertainment.
I'm glad it worked for you. For me it didn't, and I think I've given some pretty solid reasons why. I'm not expecting to change anyone's mind, just explaining some of the things I didn't like and what I would've done differently. Quite honestly, if I didn't love this game so much I wouldn't waste so much time talking about it on an internet forum. But that doesn't mean I think it's perfect.
