Magical guns: What're my options?

yalborapyalborap Registered User regular
edited December 2008 in Games and Technology
Being the crazy guy that I am, I find myself tempted by the idea of magic guns.

Now, they do not need to be truly magical. Status effects and elemental damage are what I'm after here. If it shoots regular bullets magically, it's also out.

What I've played that fits the bill:
Monster Hunter 2 Freedom
Bioshock
Mass Effect

I'd like to avoid JRPGs if possible. Looking for real-time, direct control, ideally. Further, if the game has some kind of crafting/modifying system so I can make my own willy-nilly(like the enchanting in Elder Scrolls, though that doesn't apply here since it lacks guns), that's a big bonus.

So, any ideas?

EDIT: I should've mentioned this...I have a DS, PSP, 360, Wii, and access to the PS2 and oXbox. No PS3, no gaming computer.

    Shadowrun?

Which? One of the old ones, or the 360 flop?

...Does the 360 flop even have bots?

The 360 one. I have no idea about the bots but I guess someone must still be playing it... right? :P

Arcanum? I guess the guns aren't technically magical, but it's a steampunk world so you have magic and technology together (sort of).

Yeah, and lots of cool spells too.

Darn, just being reminded of that makes me want to re-install again.

Parasite Eve 1. Guns do status effects and you directly control Aya.

You can also have a pistol with a 30 round magazine. that's gotta be a little magical.

What do you have in mind? The only one that comes to mine is the Auger and maybe the Bullseye (shooting a homing target your bullets follow is sadistic, once you get to thinking about it).

I have to say Metroid Prime 1. Shoot something with your fire beam, it's set ablaze. Shoot a Metroid with an ice beam and it's frozen in a block of ice, then you can break it into a hundred pieces with a missile. I guess an arm cannon technically isn't a gun, though...

Most of the weapons are pretty normal with their looks being the only unusual thing.

MGS4 has special ammunition that makes the target experience an intense emotion. So you can make a guard break down crying, or go blind with rage and attack a nearby guard, or whatever.

The point isn't the source, it's the final effect; Mass Effect let me set people on fire, irradiate them, freeze them, and so on with my rounds. Whether it's done by magic or sci-fi tech does not matter much to me.

Yeah but effects-wise it's not very "magical." It's basically just a really good tranq gun.

Well I mean they were ter'angreal and it was sort of just a shooter. They were magical, maybe not guns in the strictest sense of the word, but they still shot magic projectiles.
