I guess I just see the two actors as having a very similar schtick, and he was the first that popped into my head to compare NPH to. Also, I kinda sorta really like That 70's show.
I think I am haunted. Last night one or two of my basement lights kept on flickering or getting dimmer randomly. So today I decided to stay in my upstairs room. THE LIGHT IS FLICKERING TOO!!!

you know, when I said looking at old college acquaintances' facebook pages made me feel like a failure I was not referring to physical condition at least. Good lord some of these people really let themselves go.

See, when you say it like that, it comes across to me like saying that, for instance, a math major wouldn't want to take an advanced math class because it's too hard. We all major in perceptive inference and interpersonal communication, and my accusation is that the anime narrative method makes people aggressively lazy about it.
So if I don't like a narrative, I'm lazy?
I mean, some people do view art as a form of entertainment and I really don't see why [chat] has the odd tendency to view anything that doesn't appreciate the intellectual component of art as inferior/wrong.

Yeah I'm having issue with that, it seems like a cop out to deny someones personal taste not geling with a very subjective opinion. I personally didn't like No country and I don't think it was out of any sort of lazyness on my part.

Convince the ghost that he's an athiest and he will vanish in a puff of logic.

What I'm saying is that disliking a narrative method that's necessarily demanding of the audience makes you lazy.

I also feel like it's destroyed some of my more weeaboo friends' ability to enjoy real, deep narrative. None of my friends can watch a movie like, say, Lost in Translation, Babel, or No Country without bitching, "What's the point?" It drives me up the fucking wall when somebody says that because it's such a meaningless god damned criticism of art.
This, to me, is the real crime. This weeaboo goth chick I hung out with this summer was completely incapable of processing any narrative that didn't announce itself with giant neon signs. It's really fucking sad.
Maybe some people just don't like the way the narratives are portrayed in some films?
Of course. Many intelligent people that I respect disliked some of the movies W_H listed. They could then follow up that dislike with a thoughtful discussion of why they think it didn't work for them. They're culturally literate so I take them seriously.
The people W_H and I are talking about don't do that. It's a reflexive dislike based on "it's not like the things that I like". And it's especially common in anime because of how facile it typically is; it trains viewers not to look deeper because everything is spoon-fed to them right up front.

Doogie has shown longevity where as Topher is already on the way out.

Not really. He made a comeback by basically parodying himself

Yeah but I need to find out who the ghost is first so I can summon the spirit at his grave.
Or maybe it's a female ghost.

I wouldn't say doogie has longevity. He had Doogie, a bit part in Starship Troopers, and a self depricating role in a stoner movie that got him some good press and landed him in a CBS sitcom.

Mine would have been Trivium themed because I'm seeing them on Saturday, but then I'd be willing to admit that I was deserving of all the metal hate that was coming my way :P

Art? Pffft.
People go gaga over selfish people doing what they want on screen and getting away with it.
Raging Bull? Protagonist is a dick. Movie becomes famous.
Goodfellas? Everybody's a dick. Movie puts Scorcese on the map.
There Will Be Blood? Protagonist is a dick. Movie get Oscar nominations.
Citizen Kane? Protagonist is a dick. Movie becomes iconic.
But a move like Once comes along and drops off the face of the earth because the protagonist is a nice guy.
I conclude the audience enjoys being abused by the movies they watch.

How so? I mean I may hate the show, but he's a central reason why its on the air still and that's not a parody of doogie.

It depends upon the anime. I don't think Cowboy Bebop really did that.

Oh God. I had totally forgotten about the song this one is spoofing.
When I was four I was convinced the lyrics went "my fat mama sat on you."
Zimmydoom, Zimmydoom
Flew away in a balloon
Had sex with polar bears
While sitting in a reclining chair
Now there are Zim-Bear hybrids
Running around and clawing eyelids
Watch out, a Zim-Bear is about to have sex with yooooooou!

I'd argue that if the way a piece of art was constructing results in its audience the feeling that its crap/not great/not well approached then the method itself has failed. There's no compulsion that just because art's produced in a certain way that it has to be evaluted in the context of "oh that's just how it's supposed to be". There could be really shitty methods for conveying ideas.

But seriously, Brave New World is all kinds of awesome.
Meh.
You missed the part where I said that I haven't read a book in over a year and part of why I'm finding it so wonderful is because it's totally different from the other forms of entertainment that I've become accustomed to.
