Somewhere we went from translators who couldnt speak english to ones that have a larger vocabulary than us....
Considering your average teenager (and thus, I would imagine average gamer) has a literacy level that's best characterized as embarassingly inadequate, this can only be a good thing. I'm sick to death of dialogue in games being written for the lowest common denominator.

I just kind of amused having gone from 'All your base' kind of stuff in games to words that I dont know (I read a fair amount, I knew espy was a word, but I hadn't seen gambol before). But yes, definately a good thing.
I have Final Fantasy III in my DS at the moment... I also have Final Fantasy V in my DS.
Dual wielding FOR THE WIN.
This is exactly what I'm doing. And I've got XII in my new used PS2. GLORY.
I think I need to tweak the sig a bit, but I love that I found that font.
Also: is it me or are bows fucking pimp in this game? Refia's using one as a back-row Black Mage and even against non-arrow-weak enemies she, like, outdamages sword-wielding Luneth and Ingus combined.
Also, take a look at the manual. I once again stand by the assertion I made some time ago that a game with Yoshitaka Amano as the creature and architecture designer and Akihiko Yoshida as character designer results in the prettiest game ever. God, I'd want to see them collaborate on a next-gen console so badly. FFXII sequel for the Wii, plz!

As an English major, I also approve of the route these last Final Fantasy releases have taken so very hard. They're a joy to read without being overly complex.
Part of my interest in literature stems from playing Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy as a 6-to-8-year-old, so I approve of literate yet still not too hard to read games.

Are the two of them dual-wielding? Because if so,

Heh, yeah, my black mage is doing more bow damage on average than my fighter dual wielding swords. I dunno what's up with that.
On the other hand, my white mage, unarmed, claims to have an attack of 18, but only does 1 damage, despite characters with attack in the low 20s doing perfectly normal damage. What's up with that?

Er, pardon, I should point out that it's sword-and-shield Luneth/Ingus. I suspect dual-wield would be somewhat less crap (I keep forgetting everyone can dual-wield off the bat in this game.)
Still though, I'm so not used to bows being this much more powerful than single swords. Seriously, I want Ingus (my Fighter) to have nice defense but I may HAVE to give him a second weapon just so he can keep up in the hurtin'.
I picked this up last night, and haven't gotten too far into it yet, but so far so good.
And that intro! I'm surely not the first one to marvel at it, and I know it's just FMV and not any indicator of the system's power, but I didn't think the DS capable of such things! (So beautiful; they should have sent a poet, etc.).
After watching it the first time, I plugged in my headphones so I could watch it again but listen to the music the way it was meant to be heard. Wow. I don't think of myself as a graphics whore, but it was a pretty amazing audiovisual display.

I'm early in the game, but from playing the japanese version forever ago, I would definately recommend having one of your fighter types go the dual wield route.

Oh, yes, I forgot to mention this. The tinny little speakers on the DS rape this game's audio. Get out some quality headphones at home and just partake. The intro music is amazing with good headphones. Rest of the game's worth the headphones as well.
EDIT: GUYS. I was playing at college today in between classes, and... apparently I forgot to charge my DS. Red light of death, my DS shut off.
Is this game being advertised at all? I'd really like it if they made an epic commercial talking about the only Final Fantasy never before released in North America. A good exclusive Final Fantasy is enough to get a lot of people to buy a new system.

Haven't seen any ads for it really. I hope it sells so well they consider doing other 2d games like this. FFIV and VI redone this way would fucking rule (if they are low on space, skip some more pre-rendered cut sences).
I'm one lucky asshole. My gamestop got a few copies of the game, and they held one for me, even though they're not supposed to for new games.
I got there and asked for the copy, and the gamestop person said "You're lucky, this is the last copy." Right behind me, I heard someone say "DAMMIT." And all for a fraction of my store credit.
I think I'm gonna name my party after Taco Bell foodstuffs.
Damnit. So far I get raped by every boss at least once before winning. I'm just coming off FF12, where I didn't have to touch the controller to win the last half of the game.
I wish Monk didn't have such poor accuracy. At least 5/10 hits is a miss, and it really sucks because they have crazy high potential. A 2 bonus to attack power every job level, and my monk is getting job levels faster than any of my 3 characters. Warrior, Red Mage and Thief. She's outstripped in attack power every single one of them and is only getting more potent. But she misses so friggin often.
God bless Movietyme, and a major thank you to Mumblyfish for introducing the site. FF3 is now ordered for at least 9 pounds less than if bought in a shop

Very minor spoiler. This may even be in the manual, but I don't have it handy:
[spoiler:98430be2dd]What's the fighter's Advance skill do?[/spoiler:98430be2dd]
[spoiler:98430be2dd]Near as I can figure out, it's a regular attack that does more damage, but your defense is weakened after using it.[/spoiler:98430be2dd]
Ok. That first town you go to, the ghost town. Everything in the mine can kill me in one hit.
What am I doing wrong.
[spoiler:155962696b]Don't go to the mine. Just go to that town, get Arc, talk to Cid in the inn, then get Refia and head to the castle in the west to get Ignus[/spoiler:155962696b]
Also, thanks for the info on Advance. I figured it was something like that.
Also 2: anyone find that, early-on at least, the best party is just a bunch of back-row, bow-wielding red mages?

My theif is my strongest character, namely because he's starting to pull off 6 hits a turn. But it is a phenominal advantage just being 2 hits ahead of the gang.
Also, Arc is fucking failing me as a black belt. He's got his job up so much but the damage output is complete shit and he misses way too much. To the white/black mage class with you, weakling!
So far loving this game.
Whats the general consensus about using two weapons? I like the apparent attack boost, and seeing a red mage holding two awesome swords, but it seems characters who are using only one weapon are getting just as many hits and doing comparable damage anyway.
So... where am I supposed to go
[spoiler:5f33439541]After I get the boat? I'm wandering around back on the mountain near Canaan trying to find out what the hell Dresch needs to do, but there doesn't appear to be anything here[/spoiler:5f33439541]
I'm using 2 weapons on every character. The defense boost from a shield isn't worth, to me, the large difference in damage I've noticed.
It was probably just because my example of only using one weapon was someone using a bow, though I guess it is technically two weapons which explains the number of hits.

I'm doing pretty much the same thing. The shields are nice, but you do SO MUCH more damage with 2 weapons.
They're not particularly fast, they hit hard, but miss a huge amount, and take an assload of damage because they have to be in the front row, but have paper for amor. Blah.
I'm about to go to the desert with the [spoiler:63c6203e0d]flying tree fortress[/spoiler:63c6203e0d], and I want to be prepared! Is there anywhere to buy Blizara, or another Cura?
Well, I found some knuckles for my monk, and he's doing pretty respectable damage, now. Mind you, still not as good as a red mage with a killer bow and fire arrows, but it's getting better.

You have to go to the castle, ignore the mine for now.

What about Mario Kart?
I don't mean online, I'd like to walk into a store tomorrow and buy one.
I know they had a red DS phat that came with Mario Kart but... ?
