Sorry if this has been answered already, but I'm about to start the game and I was wondering if there were any strategy-guide-selling things I should take note of - like the four unopenable chests in FFXII.
I could, y'know, not worry about it and just enjoy the game, but things like that drive me insane if I end up missing them.

Only one, really.
[spoiler:bbfd7c12b6]When you fight Odin, have a job level 72+ Thief with you. You can steal the Gungnir spear from him, and it's the only time you can ever get it. You may have to reset and try over again if you don't get it the first time.[/spoiler:bbfd7c12b6]
I started FF3 weeks ago and stopped playing after getting raped in the second dungeon because I didn't level up my character. I'm going to start again tonight.
When you say second dungeon and use the singular "character"... that worries me. You should have a full party by the time of the second dungeon, unless you tried the mithril cave in the second town (which I'd advise waiting on until after the first class crystal). That cave is death... I hadn't saved the first time went exploring and basically had to start the game over.
Also, fully exploring the castle before trying the second cave is highly recommended.
Yes, I made the mistake of entering the mithril cave.
Scholar is utterly lame. You only need it for one boss fight, except that you don't really need it even then. Seriously, crappy damage with books, worthless Scan skill that wastes a turn, and level1-3 magic? Boooo. You may, however, have him use black-magic items like Antarctic Wind, because he has really high intelligence.
Ranger does very good damage, but you may be annoyed with the constant quest for more arrows.
I have WHM, SMN, Knight, THF. I switch the Knight to Viking provoke-bot when I feel I need more control over wild wild boss damage. Yesterday, I scaled many floors of the Crystal Tower only to get stomped by a red dragon that wasn't even a boss. fscking dragon.
I think the Tomes turn out to be pretty powerful. Not melee badass but enough to be something significant. And Scan eliminates beneficial status effects on enemies, which may or may not be useful. Though really, like all FF games (ok ok, I've played 3, 7-11 and Tactics Adv) , status effects are minor annoyances than serious complications to combat (though 11 did put them to some use).
Ok, I've been playing for a while (heading to Saronia as I write this) and I've got to ask. Why is everyone swaping Friend Codes? What I'm missing if I don't do it?
And following the herd, here's my code 227719953465.

God damn I want to play this game. It is lying in my room, TAUNTING me, but my damn DS is still being repaired. Thank you fucking nintendo sweden for your brilliant tech support.
Planning to go Knight, Geomancer (Summoner), Thief, Red mage. I heard something about Red mages being great in the early game, then just decent during mid game, then getting really good in the end game. Is this true?

so, just got the second wave of jobs---should I change my warrior to a knight? i'm at job level 23 with the warrior and I feel like...should I switch? what would the benefits be of starting back on job level 1 with the knight?
yeah change to the knight. They can do some magic and once in a while take some damage from other players.

When do you get access to more jobs? My characters are Warrior, Black Mage, Thief and Red Mage, all around job level 15.
The first three sets are added within maybe 10 hours. I'm almost 20 and haven't hit the last set yet. There's like 2 dungeons between 1-2 and 2-3, for a benchmark.
Okay, so Ranger wasn't exactly cutting it for me. He just doesn't do enough damage, and if you run out of arrows you're shit out of luck. Basically, I turned him back into a Red Mage. Even now the Red Mage seems like he'd be a better choice overall.
Oh, and I got my ass beat by Kracken. Time to grind Dragonball Z (TV Series) style! My power level has to be at least over 1 million!
alright so, im 15 hours in, red mage is job lvl 42 and hes using lvl 5 magic curaga, raise and dispel...i have the option to buy curaja which is lvl 7 magic but i didnt bother lvling up white mages cuz they're useless other than for healing...am i screwed later on in the game or can i get by with curaga? and for bards, which harp heals when he sings?

My team that beat the last boss had a red mage in it. I'd buy Curaga if you can spare the cash, because you might want a Sage or whatever for the last boss (Full Life is good stuff), but since my Sage was slow as hell, Red Mage would heal if needed + dish out 9999 damage when he attacked.

hmm well i havent got the final set of jobs yet, but i wasnt gonna use a sage to begin with...should i tho? i heard they're crap
I just got the Devout and it totally rules as a healer near the endgame.
I shit when my Devout lost all her MP because I was under the impression that MP rolls over between job transfers. She lost at least 30 uses of cure but gained almost that number in uses of curaga. Before she had six I believe. Well worth it even though the outfit looks horrible.

I don't know if I'd say they are crap. They can use black, white and summoning magic, but sadly the summoning magic they use is the crappy version that usually casts status effects that don't work instead of damage. Full Life really saved my ass in the last battle though, so you may want someone who can cast it, but of course that's up to you.

yea but how hard is the last battle? what lvl wud u need to be to do it stress free, or without sage?
I'm about 80% through the game and have yet to inflict a status effect on an enemy, except for a couple times when an evoker summoned for confuse.
This game would have been much better if it balanced things like that more evenly and rewarded the player for using strategy in fights.
Rangers are fairly useless because you hardly ever fight more than 3 opponents, and it's far better to do full damage to one opponent than partial damage to lots of opponents.
Evokers are useless because status effects are broken, which is half of their attack. Bards are close to useless for the same reason.
Black Mages and Magus are useless because black magic is so underpowered, relative to melee, summoning and geomancy. Even when shrunk, it's usually just better to run away from fights than to rely on black magic.
Sages are pretty useless for the same reasons as Black mages and Evokers. Yeah, they still get white magic, but you're better off taking a Devout.
Scholars are fairly useless because enemies with actual elemental resistance are very rare.
Geomancers are ridiculously overpowered, having the best melee attack for most of the game, and the equivalent of free unlimited super black magic.
I think the game would be much improved if they fixed a lot of these problems. And maybe they could have stats carry over from jobs, so the guy who's been an Evoker for 20 levels is a better Summoner than the guy who's been a Viking for 20 levels.

I was level 56, and had a Dark Knight, Knight, Red Mage, and Sage, all job level 99 except for the Sage, who was job level 68 or so. It wasn't what I would call stress free, as I came pretty close to wiping twice.
Rangers do get four attacks regardless of how many enemies there are. If there's just one, he attacks the one four times.
Bard: Dream Harp=Healing
It sucks that Geomancer totally kicks Black Mage in the balls. The only time a BLM would be better is it you're in many fights with creatures that have specific weaknesses, or you really get annoyed when Whirlpool misses a lot. Even then, free spells+a chance to cast shadowflare is still better.
Yeah but the Dream Harp is only useful for so long, and never really gets any upgrades.
My point about the rangers is that you never fight large groups of enemies, so attacking four times at low power isn't really ever useful. Since melee is so powerful, fights are most efficiently fought by chopping down one enemy at a time.
I guess a ranger+black mage combo might work well, with the ranger mopping up after the black mage group-nukes. But it seems like more trouble than it's worth. Especially considering black magic takes MP and Rangers require arrows.
Haven't been in this thread for sometime now, stopped playing the game for a bit but I still have a burning question that may have been answered already: When the hell do I get new jobs? I'm still stuck with the original 6 or 7 - I've beat the tower across the ocean, now I'm circling the rim of the map riding around on chocobos.
If I remember correctly, you have to go to the Dwarves and do whatever they need done. The dwarf island is left when you go through the area that had the whirlpool. It's an island.

I've been the the dwarf Island and tried jumping in that whirlpool....I dunno I'll give it another shot. Thanks.

You gotta get rid of the whirlpool not jump into it.
On another note, Kracken raped my dog. I survived for about 16 turns (barely, lots of healing going on) and for every turn except one my geomancer did whirlpool (the one other turn he did the air blade thing- proper name is eluding me). I'm tempted to return my geomancer to a black mage for this fight (but the job level is really low and needs to be worked up), good idea or bad idea?

I had a geomancer for that fight. She used Shadownova or whatever the random 9999 damage ability is.
It was not a long fight.

Bah! I went into the Crystal tower at way too low a level (50) and made it through fine until I hit the first of the several subsequent bosses. I got behind on my heals and he beat my ass good. My save is outside of the tower and about an hour of play time away from where I got killed. I'm in no mood to grind. For the time being FFIII is banned from my DS.
[spoiler:8e75f1a766]Do not ignore people's warnings/advice. Climbing the tower below about level 60 is pretty much suicide. You're in for an ass whooping at even level 50. The monsters in the tower aren't too bad if you've got some damage dealers (Ninja, high JL Dragoon, etc.) but the bosses are tough. I made my attempt with a Magus, Sage, Ninja, and Bard. The Bard seems like a weakling but the Lamia Harp doles out some serious harshness on enemies and gives a good idea of their HP. My Ninja and Magus were doing the most damage but I think a Devout would be a better choice than the Sage. You don't get enough level 8 spells to be a healer and backup attacker. Here's a hint, if you're mini, your physical damage sucks ass no matter what.
It is.
Yeah, you should make everyone a mage of some sort for that area. Geomancer works too, if you have that job (?).
That with the occasional help from that dude that follows you around and it was no real problem.
