Grand Theft Auto: The Ballad of Gay Tony is the second of the two episodic expansion packs for Grand Theft Auto IV. You play as Luis Fernando Lopez, a member of the Northwood Dominican drug dealers and the personal bodyguard to Tony "Gay Tony" Prince.

The Ballad of Gay Tony "injects Liberty City with an overdose of guns, glitz, and grime" and that "players will struggle with the competing loyalties of family and friends, and with the uncertainty about who is real and who is fake in a world in which everyone has a price."

The parachute makes a return, as well as new vehicles and weapons!

The Ballad of Gay Tony will be released October 29th, 2009, as a download or as a combined standalone disc-based package titled Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City featuring both expansions and will not require the original Grand Theft Auto IV to play!

How does it play?

GTA IV takes place in a redesigned Liberty City (Grand Theft Auto, Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto Advance, Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories). Four boroughs of NYC are represented, as is New Jersey. "Broker" is Brooklyn, Queens is "Dukes", the Bronx is "Bohan", Manhattan is "Algonquin", and New Jersey is "Alderney."

Combat has changed from previous 3D GTA games, and now has a Gears of War-like cover system, and Crackdown-like lock-on/free aiming hybrid targeting.

Feature list brought to you by bruin:
- The location will be Liberty City, a completely retooled and more realistic, denser version.

- There will be five boroughs: Dukes (Queens), Bohan (the Bronx), Algonquin (Manhattan), Broker (Brooklyn), and Alderney (New Jersey). The player starts the game in Broker.

- You can no longer simply walk up to a car and jack it, or go to Pay and Spray to remove your wanted level. Some cars need to be broken into via the window and hot wired, older cars may stall, and you need to evade the police's line of sight.

- While the game is not as big as San Andreas, it has more detail and less wasted space.

- The police system has been entirely retooled. You will not instantly become wanted whenever you commit a crime, even in public. If there are no cops around, and someone sees you, they will have to notify the police. When the police are notified, a circular search area will appear on your radar. If you are outside of this area the cops will not be able to find you unless you commit another crime. If you are spotted in the circular area, the police will follow you to that location.

- Since Pay and Spray isn't an effective way of alluding the police, you must use other ways to get rid of wanted level: changing your clothes (especially if they are bloody); switching cars to confuse the police; running into someone's house, out the back, and on to their fire escape, among other things.

- Many interiors are fully decorated and have been given a much bigger emphasis and importance.

- While the game does not have planes, it does have helicopters.

- Holding down the fire trigger half-way will allow you to free aim your weapon, while holding it down completely will lock on to the nearest enemy.

- Niko has a cell phone. With the cell phone, you can call any number that's in the game, including mission leads, various characters, 911, and more. You access multi-player through your phone.

- Car trunks are now usable. You can put bodies and weapons into car trunks.

- Missions have been completely retooled. You won't have a giant arrow over someone's head if they are your target. For example, if you have to kill a target, but he's surrounded by a group of people, you may not know who he is. You can handle this in multiple ways. You can find out his phone number, call him up, see if he responds, and kill him; or you can simply go up to the entire group and kill all of them. The choice is up to you. Of course, if you do the latter, your boss may be upset with you...

- Depending on how well and what you do during missions, you can form relationships with your bosses and clients. If you do well, you will have a good relationship.

- Maintaining character relationships can result in specific rewards. Little Jacob is the man who sells you weapons. Your relationship is maintained through phone contact and loyalty. A relationship with a lawyer can help remove your wanted level with a phone call, for example.

- Trip skip feature from Vice City and Vice City Stories is back. Now you can even use cabs to drive you pretty much anywhere you want. You can skip the cab ride and get to the destination quicker for a cost, or you can view the ride from the first person and enjoy the trip.

- Ammunation is not a good supply for weapons any more. Having good relationships will get you access to more and better weapons.

- There is more emphasis on hand to hand combat in GTA IV.

- You should beware night time in certain burroughs, as you may get jumped by random gangsters and the freaks of Liberty. You can get robbed.

- There is now a GPS.

- The game now has a cover system.

- You can have girlfriends in the game. You can meet women through the internet for blind dates. They will react to how you act, where you take them, and even what you wear. Some are more clingy than others. For example, one may constantly send you text messages. If you ignore her, you could upset her.

- The internet is a feature in the game. You can use it to browse for information, view and send e-mail, and even setup blind dates.

- There will be no turf wars.

- You can now use an ATM or go to the bank to deposit or withdraw funds.

- You can now shoot different body parts and your victim will react realistically depending where he has been hit.

- Rockstar will use the Euphoria Engine, known from Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. It will power much of the physics in the game.

- Pedestrians have a memory. They remember your face when they saw you doing a criminal act and run away in terror whenever they see you again.

- The multiplayer will be activated via the cell phone. There are 15 game modes with up to 16 players online for the console version. The PC version supports 32 players.

- Two minutes equals one hour in-game.

- There will be no seasons in the game.

- Every cop car has a working computer, which allows you to search for any criminal in the city, find his where abouts, and any thing remotely related to him or her.

- You can call the police, ambulance, and other services via 911. You can use this to escape from a heated battle or even clear out a police station.

Reviews

Note: Grand Theft Auto IV hasn't been reviewed based on platform, therefore there's no need to list both PS3 and 360 reviews from the same network. These networks, such as Gamespy and IGN, essentially copy and paste their review for each platform, tweaking a word here or there. Both versions of the game are mostly equal, so buy the game on the platform your friends are for the great multiplayer or based on your controller preferences.

G4 - 5/5 - "Grand Theft Auto IV is not just a great GTA game, but a legitimately great game. Rockstar North has taken the series that defined the previous gaming generation and not only updated it to meet next-gen standards, but raised the bar for all subsequent open-world games."

IGN - 10/10 - "Grand Theft Auto III was a revolutionary title, one that inspired a whole new generation of 3D action games. Grand Theft Auto IV is just as big a leap forward, though perhaps in subtler ways, and sets a new benchmark for open-world games. Everything in GTA IV works in harmony. The story would be nothing without the city; the city gains realism from the physics engine; the physics compliment the improved AI; the AI would make no sense without the new cover system. And on and on. There is no one major weak aspect."

IGN AU - 9.8/10 - "For a start, making the decision to put the controller down and start writing this review was a big test of self control. The original plan of starting writing the review Saturday morning, soon became, Sunday morning and shortly thereafter Sunday night. Never before have we played a game that’s so hard to put down... Thanks to the most believable characters, the best visuals, the most realistic physics and above all, the most fun to be had of any game yet, Grand Theft Auto IV deserves a place in the collections of anyone even vaguely interested in videogames."

IGN UK - 10/10 - "Expectations were so high for Grand Theft Auto IV that one of the biggest surprises is that it’s managed to meet them. That it’s also gone on to confound these is truly a marvel, and the game’s Liberty City is nothing less than one of the greatest videogame worlds yet conceived. With this game, Rockstar has set out to free itself from the excesses of the series past to emphasise the character of its world, and in doing so has created a high watermark in the relationship between narrative and play. It’s no less than the definitive open world game, and by that measure the definitive interactive experience of this generation to date."

The video editor is really neat and simple to use.

    Here's one!

    And another one!

They took me about 10 minutes, so if you're willing to put in the time you can get some pretty amazing videos going. Very very easy to use!

I decided to start a new story mode game so I can get the Liberty City Minute achievement.

Skipping cutscenes and using taxis almost exclusively is tits.

EDIT: Also, shoving people's cars so they get out to fight me then running to the nearest cop and having that person arrested. Then doing it 10 more times so the whole intersection is clogged up and dropping a grenade on it all.

New Nvidia beta drivers are out here. They are recommended for people having issues with GTAIV

edit: gained a 10% improvement in fps over the 180.48 drivers, but something is mucked up. My ammo and money overlay information is missing and I have some odd pop in on small items that I wasn't before.

Hey, I've heard that this is apparently a really horrible port - they've added DRM, game runs slowly on most hardware, crashes to desktop constantly, and includes a bunch of bloatware you have to install in order to make it run. Can anyone confirm this? I was really looking forward to playing this on PC.

They've fixed it up quite a bit in the last few days. Rockstar Social Club and GFW are fairly unobtrusive, and since they patched social club I haven't had 1 CTD. Performance could be better, but I think the main problem people had with performance was that the game limits your graphics settings to what it thinks are appropriate which anoyed a lot of people. But the -norestriction command gets rid of that. Since they fixed that it's been good times all the way baby, although I haven't tried MP yet so I can't comment on that.

Hey, I've heard that this is apparently a really horrible port - they've added DRM, game runs slowly on most hardware, crashes to desktop constantly, and includes a bunch of bloatware you have to install in order to make it run. Can anyone confirm this? I was really looking forward to playing this on PC.

Bah, this is a huge problem with 360 to PC ports, and shows some really lazy developers. EA's ports have been spot on (and are normally delayed for lots of TLC), and everyone else's ports have been god awful. I've been having constant crash-to-desktop issues in Far Cry 2 and Fallout 3 that are common and have yet to be patched.

I kind of wanted to pick this up, but it has the same fucking symptoms as all the other broken ports of the year. I'm so fucking upset about this; I dumped another $100 into my PC about two months ago to handle all the new games, and now sloppy porting has fucked me out of being able to play them at all.

Left 4 Dead works fine. Mass Effect plays fine. I should probably just go buy Dead Space and pre-order Mirror's Edge PC, because maybe I'll actually be able to run those without a crash to desktop every 20 minutes.

I hope they get these guys get their acts together on PC versions, especially when all three of the games I mentioned here (Far Cry 2, Fallout 3, GTA IV) are historically PC franchises. And I refuse to buy them on a different platform. Which means I'll pretty much stop buying games entirely if they don't clean this mess up.

I'd love to read a post-patch article from R* on what was wrong, because this performance issue seems like a really amusing/interesting bug.

This. I find the same thing except that after around 1 1/2 hours of playtime, performance takes a steep dive. Has there been any report of a memory leakage issue? It kind of reminds me of Gothic 3.

Edit: By the way, those tweaks are complete and utter poop, you'd probably be safe to remove the link.

They fucking screwed my game up. It worked Ok before, but now I don't have any textures. I've tried the safe-mode driver sweeper stuff and it's still broken.

Has anyone been able to fix this yet?

Actually, what's now happening for me is I'm able to run the game at 1920x1200 with everything all the way and just great FPS, but the pop-in is the most hideous I have ever seen.

I had a marginal improvement ~3fps (10%), but I was able to change the renderer to highest.

IGN interview with Rockstar about PC issues:
    http://au.pc.ign.com/articles/936/936304p1.html
IGN: Just to start out could you give us a sense of how widespread the problem actually is because it's difficult to tell from looking at message boards.

Kevin Hoare: I guess that's really hard to determine. The only thing we really have to go on in that regard is support calls we've been getting which have been quite low or as expected, which I think is roughly around one percent…It seems like maybe these forum posters are the more outspoken percentage of the players. That's really the only thing we have to go on as far as numbers go.

IGN: What sort of issues are you hearing about, both expected and unexpected?

Kevin Hoare: We're on the forums ourselves monitoring the issues people are having. A lot of these issues obviously we haven't seen in our testing and we're working to reproduce them and find workarounds for those issues. Many of the issues that we've found so far haven't been a direct result of the game itself but rather configurations of driver installations or power management software causing issues, various things of that sort.
IGN: Before we get into that, a few questions about general graphics options. Why can't you actually through the graphics menu adjust AA (anti-aliasing), turn off shadows, and why is there a resource usage limitation?

Kevin Hoare: Early on we decided we weren't going to support DirectX 10. We were just going to work on increasing the visual quality with what we had with DirectX 9. If we had DirectX 10 support we could have had the AA in there, but we don't have any.The shadows, at least from the forums and what I'm seeing, I think a lot of people don't understand that the shadow density is only designed for a certain type of light in the game. In the daytime there's a general shadow that covers the entire world. That is hooked up directly to the video mode. It scales automatically with resolution. So the higher the resolution you set the game, the higher your shadow, mirrors, water, reflection, everything automatically scales.

We had all those options available and we found that people were confused by so many options so we wound up merging them into the video mode.

I would try to put something witty here but... I really don't need to. This is just so bizarre.

Wait, so basically turning up the resolution also turns up a bunch of other hidden settings?

    That...is...retarded.

I don't understand. Rockstar used to be so smart. Their PC ports used to be great. What happened?

Limed. You really wonder how much they talked to Nvidia etc, even a lowly tech monkey there would have told them how stupid that is.

    3.) Expanded multiplayer.
Just seems like such a pain though, I think I'll wait and see if this mess gets fixed.

Yeah that's pretty incomprehensible, and the interview doesn't give much leeway for it being a misunderstanding.

Although I agree that a lot of the "bad performance" issues probably stem from people trying to max out the game when you're REALLY not going to be capable of it on any hardware. Things like draw distance and crowd / traffic density can be maxed out anywhere from 5-10 times what was running on the 360, and that's excluding the already higher resolutions. I still think that's at least partly Rockstar's fault though. They needed to give some sort of baseline indicator of what the game was originally running on on the 360 so that people could start from there and work their way up to whatever their system can handle.

It wasn't saving settings for me before either. Every three loads or so, it loses the settings I put in.

Heh, my only issue was flickering shadows when I started with this. But I got the latest ATI drivers and it ended up working out for me. However, after playing for 1-2 hours, I started noticing a little bit of a slow down in my game. I guess I saw it when areas with more complex shadows/lighting when the area would render funny at first but then fix itself after a moment. Like a solid gray block and then it'd populate in the shadows, Niko, the car, etc.

I also noticed that whatever is outside of my view doesn't render when I'm not looking at, which is fine I guess, but when I turn to look, it takes a second and then the engine realizes I'm looking at it so then it renders the building details in my view. This was most apparent when I was in a cutscene with a mission-giving character when it would pan between his face and mine. Each time it swapped views, the background had to render itself again. While not detracting from gameplay itself, it was distracting.

    PS
I still hate the Social Club and GFW getting all up in my face. And mouse speed should still be fixed.
