First impressions were terrible. Had to go through the fucking 50 step program for installing it, and it still needed the disk in the drive? What the fuck. First impressions in the game were just as bad. It ran terribly, so I knocked all the settings down, so it looked worse than GTA3 - and still ran terrible. Yay. I was afraid I just wasted my money on something I wouldn't ever play. I thought I'd try some tweaks and give it another shot though. This is what I did.
1. Downloaded the crack - Apparently Securerom causes some crashes and takes up a bunch of resources
I'd heard the game has triggers that cause weird behavior if you don't have the CD in. Things like a constantly shaking camera and broken cars and stuff. Guess they fixed it. Either that or you've yet to run into one of the dozen odd hooks they claim to have installed in it to prevent you from running it without SecuROM.
Either way, you're now a FILTHY CRIMINAL COMMIE PINKO! Don't you realise the support you've given to Hitler by downloading that crack?
2. Downloaded nVidias new beta drivers - Apparently a good boost for GTA4
3. Made a file called commandline.txt in the games root directory - added the norestrictions and nomemrestrict flags
4. Turned off the 30 second video clip option
5. And ran the game
The difference was incredible. I don't know which tweak made the biggest difference, but I'm now running at high settings at 1650x1080 with a much higher, rock solid framerate. And it looks pretty damned good. My specs, for those interested.
Someone tried to stop him stealing his car. His hand got trapped in the door. My friend took a sharp turn to the right, the body was flung out to the left, hand still trapped, reaching desperately with his other arm to try and free himself,
and then he was liquidated by an oncoming truck.
My friend actually paused the game and looked at me in horror.

I haven't gotten anything crazy and unique like that yet.
Maybe I need to steal more vehicles and stop taking ones that are just parked in a corner.

I just stole a supercar with someone working in the boot, the boot slammed on his hand and i dragged him around for a bit.
Brilliant!
Heh. Same friend stole mock corvette, and got a paint job. It came out pure white with a badass crimson stripe around the upper chassis. He's now got it parked outside his house and never uses it. Just looks at it.
So, when you use a cheat, and it says "Achievement Locked", does that mean it is impossible to ever get that achievement ever, or is there a way? I used the full armour cheat on a whim, and then saw that message and my heart sank. Cheaters never prosper I guess.
I tried to steal a guy's car on the highway once. It was a fast car and I was driving something crappy so I wanted an upgrade.
I pull in front of him and stop and a bunch of cars smash into us so his car is wedged between 3 cars and the median. I pull him out of his car and try to move forward, but he yanks me back out and jumps in and can't get away either. So I yank him back out, then he yanks me back out.
This goes on until I finally get the car free, but he's hanging on to the door handle so I smash him up against the concrete median and leave a big red streak down the side of my car. Stupid bastard should have just ran off while he had the chance.

Pretty much, but achievement are ultimatly pointless so don't beat yourself up about it.
You'll always want something you can never have, that's how achievements work...

On the 360 as long as you don't save you can just reload the save, or the whole game, and the achievements are back.

That car was the last thing is wife ever gave to him before she finally succumbed to the cancer. But, it's okay now... He has finally joined her and he can listen to her constant nagging for the rest of eternity about the stupid way he died trying to defend his car from a maniac. At least she had cancer.

So, wasn't that patch supposed to be out today? Where the fuck is it?
I do want them to release another DLC pack sometime in the future that has Niko as the protagonist again. Sort of like a 'Six Months Later' thing, to show how stuff worked out for him and Roman.
They never dealt with Bulgarin. They could wrap that up.

Considering how long it took them to get the DLC for Microsoft worked out, they might just throw tradition to the wind and carry over Niko to the next game. Or else we'll be waiting a while.
Unless they were working on the rest of the DLC alongside the Microsoft-exclusive stuff. Because they really really really need to tie that up -somehow-.

This game is healing a lot of grievances over its code with superb scriptwriting and VA.
I'm glad it's got a taste for the complexity of character without sacrificing its defining satirical streak.
Yeah the cutscenes are really well done, but some of Nico's actions are without motivation or completely against what he says.
It's still an interesting enough story to keep me going so far, but I'm not past the Dwayne/Playboy X part yet so we'll see what happens when the whole city opens up.
He's joking. Also, there's supposed to be two Microsoft-exclusive packages, right? Meaning there will be more that are multiplat?
Ooooh.
I don't know about the DLC. I assume what the 360 gets in exclusive DLC, the PC users will, too. (Just saying that since I thought the Exclusive DLC was billed as the '360 DLC'.) The only other platform is PS3. Which, (not being a bitch about it or anything, just saying) could realistically have the whole game that it was destined to get. We'll just have to see on that.

I've never heard about multi-platform DLC. I don't think it was ever denied, but all added content so far is exclusive to the 360. (It probably doesn't extend to the PC, so I'd expect it to show up there sometime after the 360 release.)
I'm glad it's got a taste for the complexity of character without sacrificing its defining satirical streak.
I found the satire and drama to be clashing, rather than complementary. When the game ends, the camera sort of pans over the city and you see the Statue of Happiness. It's supposed to be a dramatic ending, but when I saw the coffee cup in her hand, I burst out laughing since I'd never noticed it before.

I think they should have committed more. One way or the other. The story had most of the drama and the environment it was placed in had most of the satire. I enjoyed it overall, but it didn't mesh well.
That and other decisions they made have me leaning in the direction that GTAIV is an overall step back from what they had done previously. Maybe the DLC will show where they might be headed now that they've re-created the 'base' world and are now familiar with the environment.

I thought it was just me that thought this at first. I guess one of the reasons why I liked Saints Row 2 more than GTA is not that it's satire was better, nor that its story was better, but rather it set a consistant tone rather than GTA's strange mix-mash of serousness and parody. It was hard for me to truely immerse myself with the great storyline of GTA's when the radio commercials and pedestrians (If I hear them shout "cheezy vagina" one more time...) was quite over the top in parody.

They could do with making the peds less completely looney, but with a straight faced radio, GTA would lose a lot.
It seems like despite all the good music they put in, GTA wants to hammer home the fact that being forced to listen to FM radio in a car for a long time fucking sucks.
Yeah the radio is fine. Radio is stupid and parodying it is fine, same with the internet.
I won't argue that the banter between pedestrians is stupid and could be toned down. It just makes it seem like everyone in Liberty City is a perv or a complete asshole. Since otherwise the it really does feel like a city these instances stand out.
Well it's a step forward from past GTA's where they just recycled taunts. Here they have more or less realistic sounding cell phone conversations. And they put in raving street preachers.
Well it's a step forward from past GTA's where they just recycled taunts. Here they have more or less realistic sounding cell phone conversations. And they put in raving street preachers.
The problem as I see it, is there is simply less. Street ped conversations in San Andreas didn't always make much sense, but you could stand around for a long time just eavesdropping. In GTAIV, I couldn't be bothered because they didn't say much, and when they did, I couldn't care less about it.
The radio stations were, for the most part, decent enough. But I'm pretty sure they were on loops like 3 and VC were. After the more dynamic stations in SA it was a bit disappointing. And whether you liked it or not, LCHC is short short short...
Lazlow felt really out of place this time. I could listen to the hour long Chatterbox on a loop and not really tire of it. Radio 2.0 just felt tired. Maybe that was the point, but I didn't enjoy it much. The other non-music stations didn't have much in the way of entertainment and after the changed-by-story WCTR in SA, it was a letdown.
Going for a more 'real' experience with GTAIV and then having something as ubiquitous as the radio be so out of place was awkward. I'm hoping that Rockstar decided to make a change in the direction the story would go and the radio was created separate and remained as a holdover from a previous design doc.
I've already said this before but I think there's something fundamentally wrong with trying to tell a story like IV's in a series like GTA. There's too much filler and a lot of stuff that just doesn't make sense.
Just a note for ATi users, the Catalyst drivers released today may get you a pretty hefty FPS boost. Reports seem to be varied, but as soon as I applied them I got the same performance with textures at medium and shaders at high as I used to get with both at low.
Question: If I use cheats, but don't save, will it affect anything afterwards?
Also, I've just completed Bull in a China Shop. Much longer to go until the second island opens up?
I'm just glad most of the missions are a lot easier than the previous games. I always hit a mission I just had no interest in trying for the thirteenth time and moved on to a different game after doing a bit of screwing around.

Spoiler'd for the ultra-sensitive (but not really giving much away so don't worry about it):
You'll have to find a new place to live and meet Playboy X before Algonquin becomes available.
