Actually, if you play with someone who has Entrenchment, the Entrenchment stuff just gets turned off and you play a vanilla game. They designed it so it wouldn't fracture the player base.

I was under the impression that would be the case for the full release, but not the beta that everyone is playing now. That said I've yet to try.

Oh, well, I dunno. I figured that would be a major part of it, especially now since a lot of people don't have it.
I really am glad about Entrenchment. I never played much vanilla simply because even though I'm not a turtler by nature, I sort of wanted defense to be a little more meaningful/functionally existent.

I'm not a turtler, but if Entrenchment provides a means to stop bastards from running tiny harassment fleets past my front lines and into the depths of my empire so I don't have to give chase with my own tiny (but not AS tiny) fleet after it to stop it from doing any damage then it's a-okay by me.

Yeah make no mistake, Entrenchment doesnt mean you can turtle. It means you can hold the line long enough for fleet support.
Relying on defenses alone will make you lose quick.
But that is the hole in the game that needed to be filled. You cant jump through enemy systems willy nilly now all over the place. You can very certainly build a front line that cannot be breached.

So, having just sunk about 4 hours into the demo before realising where the time had gone, I'm definitely going to buy Sins of a Solar Empire. Everything is just so incredibly polished; there isn't a single aspect of the interface that doesn't feel completely logical. The sheer spectacle of watching large fleets splatter each other is utterly mind blowing. Best of all is the pacing; I've been turned off strategy games for a damn long time because in recent times they've all required lightning reflexes just to play even half decently. Sins of a Solar Empire does have plenty happening in larger games, but it rarely gets overwhelming.
I guess it'll just boil down to whether I play the Traders, Space Perverts, or Aliens. Space Perverts is sounding mighty appealing, but we'll see how things go.
This so much. I think I have at least 3 multi games that were saved to "continue the game later" when it got too late/people had to go, none of which have happened. The only time I can see a normal (or *shudder* slow) game being played to completion is an all day saturday marathon, and even then we could probably fit 2 or maybe 3 fast games into the same amount of time.
I now have a competent PC and am considering purchasing the full thing if I could get some help with the demo missions. Some levels my PC does great, others chug, I guess it depends on the background.
Anyway, when I move from one planet from the other, I can see some pirates that automatically get attacked, but I also see metal and crystal extractors there with status "Can be captured." I guess they're derelict or easy to seize. How do you capture them?

Neutral planets? Like Asteroid Belts and Gas Giants?
TEC and Advent can use a colony frigate to capture them, and Vasari can use scout frigates.
They yield much greater resources than the normal extractors around planets.

That is what you were asking, right?
Yes. Thank you, I'm still getting a handle on units.
I don't want Steam, so I'm buying it directly off the website.

Luckily for you this isn't on Steam! It is however on Impulse, and even if you buy a boxed copy or directly off their website you can still register it on Impulse to redownload later, plus I believe you have to use it to patch the game anyways.
There are ways to go about patching it without Impulse. Though I don't see why you would be so concerned. Impulse is essentially just Steam only uses far less memory and doesn't have to be running to play the games. There is no downside unless you value that extra 14mb of HDD space.

Nobody's interested in playing this? I'd be down for later today.

I don't think you get the whole Shift-tab community overlay, which is nice for setting up games.

Steam name: Chicago Ted.

I don't see what's all the fuss about Steam to be honest. I find that Xfire, especially with all the features they added in the last year, is far superior.

Well besides the community features (including the shift+tab overlay mentioned earlier) there's the whole huge library of games that you can buy through their store and download as many times as you want on any computer with an internet connection.

Man, you guys are giving me a bad rep here, I didnt betray anyone in the last game.
Anyone up for a match today?
That would be a problem, also Im going to assume that you dont have entrenchment installed? All the cool kids are playing entrenchment now.

I haven't tried either.
The expansion for Sins, currently in beta. The rub is if you buy the download of entrenchment, you can download the beta straight away.
phase mines
have there ever been two more beautiful words in the english language?
Cellar door?
So I discovered Novalith cannons in my last game. Having 3 of them is a nice way to blast home worlds and really speeds up conquest.
Entrenchment is like £8 and worth every penny.
I don't pay for betas which aren't Relic games. Cause CoH and DoW are awesomer.
I'll get it when the beta is done and it's more balanced :P

Well I only just figured out how to form a fleet, that's how bad I am.

Fixed, I hope.
Man, I still don't do that.

You must despise Valve.
