Laptop/Wireless Internet/Playing WoW Problem

The computer in question is an Dell Inspiron 1420

The wireless router is a Netgear router. It's crappy but I don't even know if this is the problem yet.

My girlfriend recently started playing WoW and she has been running into some problems while playing it, mainly that after a random amount of time she disconnects completely from the internet and cannot reconnect unless she reboots her computer.

I have a feeling that running WoW is causing her computer to overheat and it is somehow affecting her wireless connectivity. While she is playing the bottom left hand corner of the laptop gets pretty hot. I suggested she set it on a table or something to transfer the heat out easier but this hasn't had much of an effect.

This is not the first time that she has played an online game, but it IS the first time she has had this problem. She played Eve-Online for a few months and never had the problem of disconnecting, and never had the problem of the computer becoming very hot.

I turned down some of the graphics settings to hopefully delay the disconnection but I don't know how long that is really going to work.

I know our router is a piece of crap but I can sit on my desktop playing games all day. I even started a WoW trial yesterday (god help me) and I had it open for hours and never had a problem.

Does this sound like a problem that can be caused by overheating? Or could it be a problem with the router? Any suggestions would be great.

Other systems connected to the router work fine when it happens right?
That would obviously rule out the router being the problem so...
If you're quite sure it's heat, maybe you've got a wonky NIC that's crapping out from the ambient heat.
Try turning the fan all the way up and see if that changes anything, and make sure that the air coming out has plenty of room.
Otherwise, maybe the game is sending some weird data that's causing her NIC to fail? that hardly sounds plausible but I'm not sure what else it could be.

Any idea on how to turn up the fan speed? I have never used a laptop before.

Would it be a BIOS setting or does Dell have some software fan controller?

I've had heat issues with my laptop as well, and of the array of software that was recommended to me, none could quite figure out what the hell my laptop was using as a vid card.

This is the only one i remember off the top of my head.

Keep in mind it also has options to fumble around with your registry, which i personally stayed the hell away from because i knew i'd do more harm then good. There should be a guide on the site for simple fan settings.

She's not running on battery, right? You might want to disable the power saving option on the wireless NIC in Device Manager. It's one of the first things a laptop will try and turn off to save juice. It might also be worth your time to update the drivers for the card as well.
