Hey guys, it's me, Lolly, I'm back from beyond the grave. What have I been doing lately? I'm glaaad you aaaasskked!
I (with 2 of my buddies) spent the summer making a comic book.
It's called
Sanctuary. Lemme rap to you for a sec.
Here's the official site:
www.sanctuarycomic.com
So basically, 2 of my other friends and I got together, after flipping channels and catching an episode of Power Rangers on tv and asked, what would happen if you took something like power rangers and treated it seriously? Don't laugh! You know, take all the good things we remember from when we were kids, like the mythology, the team dynamic, the aesthetic, and take out the campy, laughable, even condescending writing? And, back in early May, we started getting the concepts down for the characters, the plot, everything. We've mapped out the entire story arc from start to finish, and are really excited because (1) it came together so fast (whereas other projects are just, 'hey wouldn't it be cool to do this and that, and nothing ever happens), and (2) it's actually become a reality. A small victory, since we're just local right now, but we have some high hopes, because we really think we've got something good on our hands. I'm
the artist on the project, I got the first issue done and all the [necessary] concept art done over the summer. The first issue is 50 pages (subsequent issues will probably be less, standard 20-32 pages, as not to kill me). I did all the art, lettering and so on... Brian Visaggio, my partner in crime is the principle writer, and Martin Krause is responsible for his 3rd of the original concept, and is handling the business end of things.
They henshin soldiers in our book are called Titans, their giant robots are called Colossi (and yes they do combine into one large humanoid super colossus), but no, the emperor of this evil galactic empire is not himself launching this assault on the Earth. He sent a General. With an army.
We're housed in Richmond, Virginia and we're having a launch event/book signing this Wednesday, 11/08/06 at Velocity Comics, 904 west Broad Street (just putting that out there) from 3pm-7pm..
So, without me running anymore of my fat mouth, here's the goods.
First some of the concepts.
Paul Kauhane- Red Titan- Doesn't show up until say...issue 5, we're thinking. He assume the leadership position when he does finally arrive, in a desperate battle against some giant war machine the other 4 Titans can't defeat on their own. He pilots the Red Pegasus Colossus.
In the meantime it's just the 4 others....
Ruth Levy - White Titan- She assumes the leadership position while there are only 4 team members, when Paul shows up she isn't too happy about it. She's really bold, brash, and kind of a bitch in her own arrogant way. She has her weaknesses and doesn't like to show it. She pilots the White Eagle Colossus
Marc Williams -Yellow Titan Marc and Ruth have a serious rivalry, and they duke it out for the leadership position a number of times (until Paul shows up at least), which Marc doesn't think Ruth really deserves. He's a smartass, witty, knows how to keep a level head. Has a bit of an envy problem though, that he struggles with. His weapon is the quarter staff, though he prefers to use his sidearm (which they are all issued) more often, for, well, practicality reasons. He pilots the Yellow Ram Colossus
Emily Hua-Blue Titan - She's the cheerful one. Booksmart, compassionate but quieter than her other team-mates. She only speaks when necessary, but serves as the happy counter-weight to this mostly disfunctional family of heroes. Despite her softness off the battlefield she's quite the graceful killing machine, this really comes out more and more as hardships of war drag on...
She pilots the Blue Fox Colossus
Greg Vargas - Green Titan - Greg is also one of the happier members of the team. He serves as the class clown who kind of gets annoying but means well (think michelangelo from turtles). In battle his personality unfolds as a perfectly fearless soldier, who becomes a complete wrecking ball once he builds momentum. He pilots the tank, the Green Tortoise Colossus, which, thanks to my busy schedule I haven't had time to draw yet. forgive me!/m\
The War Titan
Now, here's the War Titan. He's a bonafide badass motherfucker. He fucks shit up and does all kinds of running a muck and...I'll leave it at that.
Marveller- This guy's name is in direct reference to the Giant Robot that Spider-Man (yes, Spider-Man) piloted in the japanese version of Spider-Man live action t.v. show from the 60s (or was it 70s?, either way it was bad). He's not giant, or a robot, but we thought it was funny. There's gonna be all kinds of henshin/sentai references/salutes in this thing. He is Triaxian. He belongs to a race of people that have been fighting The Throne for a few millenia, and after getting intel that the Throne plans to expand their galactic territory by a few more star systems (i.e. Earth), goes to earth preemptively to prepare them as best he can for the oncoming invasion by the Throne's forces. He's the guy who picks the team, gives them powers (which we developed a pretty deep technomythology for, but I won't get into now) mentors them, and so on.
Then there's the colossi that they pilot. The War Titan has a minotaur colossus but I haven't drawn it yet. Sorry again.
PegasusEagleRamFox
And again, The Tortoise and the Minotaur are MIA right now.
Now for some badguys!
There's
Captain Hallocon, who is really the face of the Ouranian threat (the Throne), and develops a vicious rivalry against Ruth. He's an experienced soldier and is very cunning and powerful, yadda yadda..
Lyche, a cold-hearted bitch who is also Hallocon's main love interest, and another commander in the Throne's army.
Phanesis, a younger less experienced commander
and
Euprophone, the quiet stealth assassin who starts questioning her purpose in this war.
There are a few key characters missing from the roster here, but like I said, time constraints, and I had to prioritize. It's all on its way eventually though.
Here's some posters I recently did that we'll be selling for 5 bucks on wednesday.
And here's some pages from the book itself! I really, really hope you like it. Enjoy.
If you like what you see you can grab one off of
www.comixpress.com which is where we got our printing done (and they're considerably cheaper than a lot of other places we looked at). It's 50 pages, full color from front to back, $7 USD. Please give me any questions, comments or critiques you have! I appreciate it guys, thanks. Later.

EDIT: One quick thing: I like the Ram and the asian-looking girl (probably because she looks like Jessica Alba, but whatever.)
Still do, as a matter of fact.
Still, there are some issues that need work, although the work as a whole is very nicely done. The lines (as had been said before) aren't too clearly defined, so sometimes it's a little hard to follow.
The green power ranger....TITAN's hamme really bothers me. It just doesn't seem to line up in perspective and the lack of detail and awkward construction looks oddly out of place.
But still, awesome
I noticed you are the reference for the yellow titan, haha.
I'll be by velocity to pick up a copy, and maybe the green titan poster. Support local artists and all. (This is Whitney, btw)
The only thing that bothers me is the first pic of the green titan, the head of his hammer hurts my eyes. It looks really flat somehow. Am I the only one who notices this?
I'd spent more time looking through the stuff but it's 2:45am and I should really go to bed =_=
- great animation focused website http://www.catsuka.com
those illustrations are hot!
I would really try to get the noises and text boxes/bubbles more integrated with the rest of the art thought. They look very much slapped on.
The actual pages themselves have a lot of blurry frames and the fonts are irritating me, especially the sound effects.
I'm not a fan of the the heavy effects in the background, I think they are rather distracting in a lot of cases and it detracts from your designs.
The comic pages look pretty nice, though I agree with Scosglen on your fonts and blurry panels. I think your also lacking a little panel variation, thats long and full page panels. Seems like you could use some panel shap/size experimentation to aid you, they can be really essential to timing in a comic.
yep the feet definitely stand out as.. "wuh?"
but i find that some parts of your drawings are too blurry, and it looks like you actually used the blur tool a lot.
[spoiler:30989840a0]I'm totally singing the theme song in my head right now[/spoiler:30989840a0]
[spoiler:30989840a0]Did i mention they have the power ranger's theme song on the Karaoke lists here in japan?[/spoiler:30989840a0]
I dare you to make less sense.
yeah, the red titan is Hawaiian, the white titan is Hebrew, the yellow titan is black, the blue titan is Chinese, and the green titan is hispanic. It's kind of intentional, kind of a joke, but kind of not? More of a nod to the genre in a laughing way than us being 100% serious about there having to be everyone equally represented for the sake of being PC. And it makes the characters easily distinguishable for the readers if likeness ever becomes an issue :P
And I don't know why, but it's not that I can't draw feet. It's just...when I get down to them I'm just like, 'eh, you get the idea.' I need to cut that shit out...
[spoiler:4bc2a8ec35]Theeeey've got....a power and a force that you've neva seen beforrre![/spoiler:4bc2a8ec35]

You guys are so lame.
[spoiler:9365819ac1]Did anyone else think the Pink Ranger was hot?[/spoiler:9365819ac1]
[spoiler:9da468a082]Yeah, and im pretty sure she was in porno too.[/spoiler:9da468a082]
Thuy Trang (yellow ranger) died in a car accident, her funeral was 2 days before 9/11, (at which point the terrorists knew it was their chance to strike!), and I dunno what David Yost (billy, blue ranger) is doing, I think broadway or something? Jason Narvy (skull) teaches theater/acting at some university I forget the name of, you can Find Paul Schrier (Bulk) on facebook.com...and the last I time I saw Austin St. John (Red Ranger, Jason) was on Forever Red, where all the red rangers got together to crush the remnants of the machine empire, and....he might have..maybe have tripled in size and.... be doing gay porn(!?). Jason David Frank (aka tommy, aka Green Ranger, aka White Ranger, aka Red Zeo Ranger, aka Black Dino Thunder Ranger) is one of the top martial artists in the country (if not the world, his nickname is Furious Frank, and he has his own martial arts dojo...and he finally cut his hair and looks completely badass.
Don't ask me why or how in the hell I know all this shit.
Yep, way to get off topic, MagicToaster...
