Funny that Gabe should question the legality of underage pastry porn,

You could have a case to answer in Australia.

    this seems silly

I mean, what if the artist had drawn lisa except said this was an alternate universe where she was actually 3,000 years old but had not appeared to age a day for some reason

or said it wasn't lisa and was actually 21

would it be "yeah but the drawing looks young?" but then that's the fuzziest line imaginable

this kind of stuff is distasteful, but I really don't see any reason to criminalize it

Neil Gaiman actually wrote about this on his blog a few days ago.
And I suspect the Judge might have just inadvertantly granted human rights to cartoon characters.

I think it's nonsensical in every way that it could possibly be nonsensical. The Simpsons characters aren't real people. They definitely aren't real children. (Given that they first appeared in the late eighties, they're also all over eighteen now...)

The idea that you could be arrested in the Western World for having that image in your computer is mind-boggling, let alone for owning Lost Girls, or for doodling members of the Peanuts gang doing things they tended not to do in the Schulz comics, or for reading Harry Potter slash, or owning the Brass Eye Paedophilia special. And, I should warn members of the Australian judiciary, fictional characters don't just have sex. Sometimes they murder each other, and take fictional drugs, and are cruel to fictional animals, and throw fictional babies off roofs. Crimes, crime everywhere.

The ability to distinguish between fiction and reality is, I think, an important indicator of sanity, perhaps the most important. And it looks like the Australian legal system has failed on that score.

In other news, why I love Illinois.
Ill. Gov. Blagojevich arrested on federal charges

Illinois Governor Rod R. Blagojevich sought to sell for cash or favors the U.S. Senate seat left vacant by President-elect Barack Obama, federal authorities said Tuesday.
Illinois Governor Rod R. Blagojevich sought to sell for cash or favors the U.S. Senate seat left vacant by President-elect Barack Obama, federal authorities said Tuesday.

Mr. Blagojevich, 51, and his Chief of Staff John Harris, 46, were arrested by FBI agents on corruption charges that also included threatening to withhold state assistance to the Tribune Company in connection with the sale of Wrigley Field. Authorities say Mr. Blagojevich, a Democrat, hoped the move would induce the firing of Chicago Tribune editorial board members who had been critical of him.

Authorities say the two men also sought to exchange official actions, such as state jobs and contracts, for campaign contributions.

"At the end of the day, the conduct we have before us is appalling," said U.S. Attorney Patrick J. Fitzgerald, whose office is prosecuting the case.

The scheme, according to authorities, included Antoin Rezko, a convicted real estate developer who raised money for Mr. Obama. Rezko was Mr. Blagojevich's principal fundraiser and is now cooperating with federal authorities in the hopes of receiving a lesser sentence, according to court records.

Mr. Fitzgerald said there is no evidence Mr. Obama was aware of any of the governor's wrongdoing.

The arrests follow a lengthy investigation that included authorities using wire taps to record conversations involving Mr. Blagojevich.

Agents received the wire taps last month after learning Mr. Blagojevich had accelerated his corrupt fundraising practices before a new state ethics law takes effect Jan. 1 that would significantly limit him raising money from people and businesses doing business with the state takes effect Jan. 1

In the last month, according to investigators, Mr. Blagojevich was recorded discussing several scenarios for exchanging the vacant senate seat that included a substantial salary for himself at a either a nonprofit foundation or an organization affiliated with labor unions; placing his wife on paid corporate boards where he speculated she might earn as much as $150,000 a year; promises of campaign funds including cash up front; and a cabinet post or ambassadorship for himself.

Mr. Obama resigned his Senate seat Nov. 16 and, as governor, Mr. Blagojevich has authority to appoint a replacement to fulfill Mr. Obama's term.

FBI Agents arrested Mr. Blagojevich and Mr. Harris at their homes Tuesday morning. Both men are expected to appear in federal court later this afternoon.

Mr. Fitzgerald said the investigation is ongoing.

"We encourage people to talk to us," he said. "We remind people that there is an awful lot we don't know and need to know." Mr. Blagojevich is the second consecutive Illinois governor to face federal corruption charges.

His predecessor, George Ryan, is currently serving a six-year prison sentence.

Australia's always had pretty crazy censorship. We don't have an R rating for games so games are either banned (Mark Ecko's Getting Up) or censored for release (Fallout 3, GTA4).

Yeah they're working on censoring the internet. Us and China: peas in a pod, protecting us from ourselves. Course there's no way to censor p2p so the only ppl who are no longer going to be able to watch such porno gems as "Noah's Ark 1/2" (you know the one where God asked Noah to bring 2 of each animal, but he could only find 1 of each, and one helluva girl) are going to be the crusty, old, computer illiterate politicians who make these laws.
