So, even though I'm switching my focus from painting/illustration to photography as some of the photo thread people's may remember, I'm still working on my painting skills because painting is dope. Anyways, I'm working on people right now and here are some hands, parts of faces and a fine lady. I think I'm doing pretty well as far as color goes, I just need to work a lot on getting structures right. So here's some art...
Hands. I really like how the top one turned out but I think there's something wonky about the bottom one. The top of the hand doesn't look right.
Eyes/noses. I went a little wild with the colors on these two but I like how they came out.
Full face. I just finished this tonight and have not turned it in or anything so last minute fixes are welcome. The lips seem weird to me but they look exactly like they do in the ref. so I'm working out what to fudge on those to make 'em look right.
Oh, and I'm still figuring out how to light paintings for taking photos of them. I've got the angle of incidence equals angle of reflection thing in my head but paint is bumpy so it still makes those twinklies. I'm guessing maybe softer lighting might help? Any advice on that would be sweet.
The first two jumped out at me as really really fucking good. The hands look great, and the way you rendered the eyes is deserving of a medal. Most impressive.
The third one seems like the perspective or proportions may be off a teeny bit. Something just seems odd. Still is miles ahead of anything I could produce with paints. Lets see some more please.
I think the "problem" with the bottom one is the eye on our right seems to be dipping down a bit.... until you blook closer and it seems to be just the shadow and light under the eye giving it a funny shape. I wouldn't really say it's a mistake per se; just looks a bit funny.
But yeah. These are rerally really rerally fucking good. Be proud of yourself.
Thanks for the comments so far. I'm gonna see what I can do with the last one. I think her left cheek might be protruding out too far which could be a source of some of the perspective weirdness.
Suggestions on the last one:
Of course, I can't verify this for sure without seeing the ref, but it appears that the perpspective of the eye on the right was not jiving with the perspective indicated by the lips, as well as being pushed too far away from the nose. Also, the hair, unless it's being intentionally puffed up, makes the skull look like it's about an inch higher than it should be.
Everything else looks pretty solid, although the wrist on the lower hand in the first picture could use some solidification- nothing wrong with the tone or light, but the direction of the brushstrokes in that area doesn't indicate that junction as clearly as it might- most of your strokes on both parts are going vertically down the form, using strokes moving horizontally across the form might give you a greater sense of solidity there.
Just smacked this one out today. It's 18" x 24" and looks pretty cool in person. I'm hoping it freaks out my friend Lana that I painted a picture of her so big and with such a weird expression. This are all oil on canvas btw, I didn't mention that in the OP. Comments?
edit: I just noticed looking at it on screen that the ear was too short so I fixed that on the actual painting.
Something about that third painting is bothering me. Like her hair goes too far up and doesnt follow the contour of her head. Though that could just be the perspective of it as mentioned by others.
Thanks for all the comments! I did end up fixing the third one before I turned it in. I made the top of her head look right and also fixed her jaw.
As far as tips go.. umm.. take some painting classes or read a few painting books. Then paint, paint, paint. For painting people, it's all about finding planes.
A couple of new ones, both portraits of friends. Both oil, top one is 16x20", bottom is 18x36.
I painted this one very quickly. I think it it only took me 2 1/2 or 3 hours. It's my favorite so far.
I did this one for my figure painting class last semester and finally finished it a few days ago. I'm not very satisfied with it. The background is boring and some of the lines are too sharp but I'm sick of working on it. I'm selling it to his parents to fund school supplies.

Goddamnit, saltiness.
So much talent should not be allowed to exist in one person.
Thanks for the comments everyone. I hope to churn out some more of these this semester, time willing. Starting a new major is going to eat up a lot of time though.

The hair on the left is pretty damn awesome, I really like the fluidity in your work. As has been said before though, the 3rd painting of the woman, is a little skewed, but nothing too destructive. d o m o r e .
I'm just really impressed that he's using oils for this quality of work. Not much room for error with that medium, and he seems to nail it spot on 90% of the time.

But yeah, whilst I may not know, you sure damn seem to. Top job. My thoughts have more or less been covered by earthwormadam... so... Poast Moar!

Still, these are impressive. I hope I can learn how to paint like this. Very awesome. Any tips?
