Upon visiting parents' house, I found that my father has purchased this tv. Now, he also purchased a Blu-ray player, but hasn't hooked it up yet, nor opened the package. So, in remembering a recent thread (which I can't find for some reason), I figured I'd ask those of you enlightened in the subject of blu-ray: should he keep this? As it's currentl unopened, it would be easily returnable, so what do you think? Also, money isn't an issue. Quality and technological longevity are probably the most important factors. I know nothing about blu-ray, so I'm of no use.

It seems like a good player, as it can get updates, right?

If you're asking about BR in general, it's OK. Why did he buy it? Do they have a lot of movies? Do they own mostly VHS or DVDs? If he wants to skip DVd and go right to BR, probably a good idea. If he's thinking of re-buying movies they already have on DVD, I'd say not worth it.

I'm going to go with Yes on this one. That's a rather nice Blu-Ray player, especially since it has the ability to also stream Netflix Watch Instantly films (if you want to learn more about this, go check out the NXE thread in G+T.) While I'm not finding anything definite, from what would be required to allow for the Netflix feature also means that the player supports Profile 2, which means that they'll be able to get all the features on Profile 2 discs (like The Dark Knight).

It's apparently a good player for Bluray titles, or for streaming movies from Netflix. One of its weaker areas is its upscaling of DVDs, though. If your parents have a large DVD collection and plan to use their BR player to watch DVDs, they might want to go with a different unit. Panasonic has one that's apparently pretty good, though I don't think it does the Netflix stuff. If Netflix streaming is a feature they want, you might actually want to look at getting a PS3 as a BR player. It's still one of the highest-reviewed players out there, not least of all because it allows for much snappier navigation. My stepfather bought a PS3 last Christmas solely for movie-watching, and he's been quite happy with it.
