Buying a 360? Read this. That is, unless you hate shiny new GPUs.

Everything I heard was that they still ship non-jasper boards back to customers, which stinks. Send a falcon board in, get it back essentially.
Checking my recently returned 360, I don't have either of those display numbers. I've got a 16.2A.
So what does that mean?
Pokemon Safari - Sneasel, Pawniard, ????
You probably got the one before Falcon.
I love how the OP just assumes that we all have 360's already, some of don't own one. (yet)
Let me tell you about Demon's Souls....
Your pretty LTTP if your getting one now. I assumed a majority of PA'ers do have them. OP header changed, just for you.
I read this and popped back out, but the edit for "OMG JASPER" title-grabbing should be enough to launch the views up. :P
Can trade TF2 items or whatever else you're interested in. PM me.
Well, ya'know, some people don't make enough money to be able to afford all three consoles, or just might not have been interested in the 360. It's better not to assume man!
So, what's the difference between a Falcon Board and a Jasper Board?

I imagine that if it breaks in two years you'll get a Jasper. Right now they'll have so many Falcons lying around they'll give you one of those if it breaks tomorrow.
But you never use the thing, so it's not going to break too soon.

It's taking up the majority of my gaming time...
Confirmed Jasperacity, by checking the label today, but I didn't have to. I had to turn down my tv volume qutie a bit because of how much quieter this thing is.
I suppose their concern would be that unsold falcon units would stay that way, but it seems really dishonest to have a real solution for the RROD, and making it a huge lottery whether you get it or not.
I suppose that's one argument in support of the 10.2 million variations of the PS3 that are out there.
Thanks! Yeah I love buying consoles later in their life cycle. The hardware is cheaper and usually better. (bugs worked out) The games selection is expansive and they are all cheap and easily found used. In fact I have a rule that I don't buy a console till after its first major price drop. The only time this doesn't work out well is in online games since the community might not be there. But thankfully there is a large overlap in the xbox and ps3/pc library so it really isn't a problem.

My Core model is a Xenon (I can figure out all those stupid codenames now thanks to that Anandtech link!) and it's still chugging along nicely, though it sounds like a freight train when spinning most discs.
Thanks Lunker. And thanks Kor for adding those pics. I didn't feel like doing that. Yes, I know- I'm lazy.
Everyone does this. Consoles always get constant revisions. Heck, there are 3 different versions of the Falcon board. The PS2 had tons of revisions. Also, stolen from neogaf:
Reliability wise, the falcons seem to have dealt with the issue and they will never rid the world of the RRoD since that's just a general hardware failure which all mass produced electronics are susceptible to.
Mine is 16.5 amps?
That means you have a Xenon or Zephyr, depending on if you have HDMI or not.
My 1st console was from original 360 launch.. 3 RRoD's later, I have this one.
Three RRoD's, pfft. I've had 4!
My first 3 all died 6 months after acquisition almost to the day, the one I got in summer 2007 lasted until this September which is the longest I've had a 360 survive.
I know there's people out there that have gone through 8 360's, and I'm sure at this point there's some with even more than that.
Same. I really like the freedom of being a multiconsole owner, but didn't want to deal with 360 till it became cheaper, quieter, cooler and reliable. Now its finally met all the requirements but I have a huuge ps3 backlog and money is tight because of christmas. So my xbox purchase will probably get pushed back to March, June or July. (unless the wii gets a price drop before that, then who knows?)
Let me tell you about Demon's Souls....
How long did it take between the time you reported the problem, and the time you got the box to ship the dead console back to MS? How long after shipping the dead console and the time you got a new console back?
If I reported the problem on Monday night, and still haven't received the box today (Thursday) can I still hope to have my console back by Xmas?
Did you get your old console back, or another similar one that was refurbished? I marked mine in a spot that they're unlikely to notice, just two small notches that would look like normal cosmetic damage, just so I can see if I got the same one back... I'm hoping to get a different console, because my DVD tray never worked properly, and over time, became almost impossible to open (I hear the little rubber strap goes slack after it's heated up, so that it slips instead of opening the tray...) My 360 is out of warranty, but still within the RROD window.
Also, did anyone send in their pre-HDMI 360 in for RROD repair/replacement, only to get another console that has HDMI? I wonder if I might get lucky on that front...

So um, great news but I hope I never have to worry about it.
My launch console lasted from day 1 (Nov. '05) till February of '08! I thought it might never die. Then the other 2 were RRoD-ed very quickly. And judging by the way this current one is acting, its most likely not far off... :?
Haha you bought the Halo Edition.
Ah, good stuff.
Yeah, the Jokes on me. I don't like Halo that much.
For my first 3, the exchange was quite fast. Think the downtime was 2-3 weeks from the point I called support.
My most recent one was a fucking disaster.. I was offline from mid-September until late November. Terrible problems getting a shipping label, idiotic help on the phone, I called them at least 15 times before I finally got to ship it off. Once that was done, the 360 was back in about a week and a half.
Every single time the replacement xbox had a different serial number. I think any RROD service call will cause that, as the repairs require a lot of doctoring on the motherboard, so they just pull you a 360 out of the refurb pile and send it to you to speed things up.
Mine was a Zephyr, and I followed Lot # and manufacture date advice trying for a Falcon. So there are no guarantees. If it red rings, I'll send it in for service and buy a new Arcade.
BTW I got this one about three weeks ago, in exchange for one that had some serious issues. I don't think Jaspers are common yet.
It runs pretty well, so I'm trying not to worry about it.
Please don't tell me I waited all these years for nothing....okay tell me, but let me down gently.
Steam / Origin & Wii U: Heatwave111 / FC: 4227-1965-3206 / Battle.net: Heatwave#11356
Also the power brick for the newer Jaspers doesn't fit the Falcon motherboard, so if you send a Falcon back you will get a Falcon back.
