Alright so Im not really looking for a solution to my overall problem (I've pretty much given up), just a specific question.
So I reinstall Rome Total War last night in anticipation of Medieval II. For any of you that have played, you'll remember that one of the first things that comes up when you start the game is the screen with the activision logo and all the trademarks on it. Well, whenever I try to start it up, one of two things will happen. Either it will freeze on that screen, becoming unresponsive and requiring a manual restart, or it will stay for just a second, then my entire computer will restart on its own.
So I look around the internet, and people who were having auto-restarts said they thought it was a hardware problem. However, right after all this happened I was still able to play Sid Meier's Railroads! and the Medieval II demo just fine. So my question is, since I was able to play those other two games with no problem, could my Rome problem really have to do with my graphics card? (Radeon 9250)
Thanks, I made sure on one of the many reinstalls I tried to update to the version of DX that came with it, 9.0c I think. I had problem with my drivers on my old computer when I played MTW, so I've been trying to mess around with these as well. Unfortunately, ATI drivers are a lot harder (for me at least) to mess around with than NVIDIA
So I officially have no earthly idea what the problem is, I've tried:
Making sure all related files are deleted after uninstall along with clearing the registry (thought this would work, because with MTW sometimes mod files would be left behind, and screw up the game when I reinstalled).
Checked my DX versions, made sure there was no conflict. Did the same with windows media player, I've tried it with version 9 and 10.
Patched the game and tried a couple different drivers for the video card.
Made sure the game was on my firewall's "allow" list (had problems with games like star wars galaxies seemingly freezing, when really they just werent being let through)
Popped the case open and pointed a fan in to make sure it wasnt overheating.
I think thats all. I guess my biggest fear is I am going to install Medieval II next week, only to find I have the same problem. Well, back to cussing and hitting the keyboard.
Just realized something. In my game directory, there is a "preferences" folder, but no file inside. If I remember right, that is the file you can mod from the very beginning so you dont have to play the tutorial campaign. So is it possible that someone my disks arent installing the files the way they should be? In that case, would buying a different copy of the game fix my problem?
