Download TCPview: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897437.aspx

Then, use TCPview (run as admin if you're on Vista) to close all Steam TCP servers (this is important, NOT the UDP ones, just the TCP ones). Steam will then reconnect to a different server, which will hopefully get you a better speed. If you don't go faster in a couple of seconds, retry until you get a speed you like.

This shit totally needs to go into the OP, I've tipped this to so many people already.

Breaking News!

PC Gaming is dead. Didn't you get the memo? Maybe that's not 100% accurate. Lets just say that the brick & mortar way of buying PC games within North America is on it's way out the door. Why? Probably because stores just don't stock 'em like they used to. Also, it's a perception issue:
It is absolutely a perception problem. I mean one of the things that happens is--Microsoft has an army of PR people that work for Microsoft. They have at least two agencies that are additional armies. Nintendo I'm not as familiar with their PR outline, but I'm sure it's similar. Sony is similar. The PC has nobody. They've got people like us, in our spare time, talking to guys like you. I mean if there were hundreds of PR people stationed around the world, whose whole job was to call you every day and tell you why the PC was a great platform, your perception would probably be different.

So if nobody is buying games in retail stores (in NA) then where are they getting them?

Steam is the futures dudes.
>> Instantly access your favorite games
The full Steam library and all future Steam releases are at your fingertips. After you've purchased a game, download it immediately and start playing.

>> Join the Steam Community
Now it's easy to find someone to play with, meet up with friends, connect with groups with similar interests, and host and join chats, matches, and tournaments. Best of all, it's all free.

>> Chat with your friends while gaming
With Steam's "Friends" service, you can talk to your friends while you play. You can also see when they're playing games and easily join the same servers together.

>> Easily browse multiplayer game servers
Steam's integrated server browser makes it easy to navigate thousands of Internet game servers.

>> Receive automatic game updates
Hunting for patches and downloading from unorganized web sites is so twentieth-century. On Steam, your games stay up-to-date by themselves. No hassles.

>> Play your games on any PC
Once you have a Steam account, you can sign in from any PC to access your games. Your games are associated with your account, not your computer.
This is now bullshit. Some games now come with 3rd Party DRM in addition to Steam's DRM. Meaning, that you can't access your games from any PC.

>> Enjoy Steam-only special offers
From pre-release discounts to free-play weekends, Steam delivers what gamers value most.

Steam is how you get your games, Steam is how you play your games, Steam is how you connect with you friends. As I see it, Steam is PC gaming.

As of this writing, there are about 323 games on Steam worth a total of $5311.03 (USD)

Extras

alabasterslim.png

With such a cool service, someone must have done some extra things to build on it. I know this guy, who made these super cool Steam signatures. They automatically use backgrounds for the games and the correct icon. Pretty neat, and they're 100% free!

You can also use a script on his page to see how much your Steam account would be worth if you were to buy every game individually. Neat stuff!

So when I registered my original Half Life CD key and got all of the HL games, I also got Ricochet. I hadn't heard of it before, but I guess it's a HL mod where you shoot discs or something and they bounce and kill a dude, and it's neon.

    Is it any good?

No one played it when I bought HL seven years ago, doubt anyone does now.

I've played it with soem friends at some point and I think it's pretty fun. It's rather simple, though and I doubt it'd be easy to find people to play with.

I think I paid $2.50 for a disc copy of Half-Life, and that got me HL, Op4, Blue Shift, Counter-Strike, Day of Defeat, Deathmatch Classic, Team Fortress Classic, and Ricochet. After that, Half Life 2 was gifted to me by a forumer who bought the Orange Box, and Peggle Extreme was free.

So I got ten games for less than the price of a cheeseburger. Score.

I would buy more games if I had better hardware. My main machine now is an Eeepc, a 1.6GHz Atom and a gig of RAM. There isn't much on Steam (other than the old ID stuff, and I can run Audiosurf decently) that I can play.

Unless I missed some stuff. Anyone have any suggestions for games that will run on my hardware?

I love Steam. I love it soooo so much. :D

Also, I've also invested a lot of money into Steam. A lot. Though that's not a totally accurate price seeing as how I've bought bundles and I've also bought things on sale for waaaayyyy cheaper than their regular listed price but I think it's a pretty fair and accurate description. I've also bought and gifted a few games (Vampire Masquerades: Bloodlines, Left 4 Dead, and Half Life when it was $.98).

Big waste of money. The game is stuck on version 1.03, when there is a 1.3 patch for it. Oh and guess what? I cant just d/l the patch and patch it, apparently that makes too much sense. Fucking waste of time and money.

From reading the thread on Steam, Valve are aware of this problem with the newest beta. It apparently happens if you have an old guest pass that has expired, even if you have since bought the game.

So, I saw a beat-up boxed copy of Titan Quest Gold (with the expansion pack) at an EB a couple of days ago for $20, and seriously contemplated buying it. Then I thought "No, wait... I bought Titan Quest boxed when it first came out for $55, then I lost the damned DVD during a move. Fuck that."

Then I went home and saw it on Steam for $20. Bought!

Not a wise thing to do when I have an 18-page paper on James Joyce's "Ulysses" due on Monday.

On the plus side, though, I am totally farming the shit out of the scorpion king, raking in the loot.

No, the scorpion boss just east of the Fayum Oasis in Titan Quest, who guards two majestic chests which always cough up 100k gold worth of merchant fodder crap, and occasionally yield something awesome like a Bloodthirsty War Sword of the Osprey, or a Noxious Large Axe of Quickness, or maybe an [Adjective] [Item Type] of [Noun].

I have a compulsion to collect loot. When I see something with a blue name drop (or a blue outline or blue tint, in other games), I salivate. My boyfriend has taken to wearing blue boxers when he wants a certain kind of attention, because my mental association is so strong that the colour alone is enough to get me all worked up.

I played through MINERVA - Metastasis recently and it was good. The writing was off and there were a couple moments where I didn't know what to do, but the map layout was top notch and probably why the guy is working on Episode 3 now.

Hey we used to have this awesome thread that was just full of awesome mods for source that kicked so much ass. If you're looking for more mods, I can definitely reccomend SMOD. It's a mod that adds all sorts of stuff to HL2, and you feel so cool when you're playing it 8-)
