Not that I remember, I think I just ended up constantly saving in new slots, so when one failed, I didn't lose that much time.
I can't run Messiah. It downloaded fine, but when I double click it a dialog comes up saying that files need to be verified, then the progress bar fills instantly, the box disappears, and no game appears. It's not running in the processes or anything.

It's monotonous to the point that I don't want to take it slow in order to avoid hits all the time. I want to beat up this enemy so I can move on quickly, but it still takes an age for each dude. And in my haste to rush through enemies I get hit too often, meaning that I never have much health.

As far as I can tell, you are suppose to put every skillpoint in melee for a while. Seems like the only thing that would make it reasonable. Kicking + throwing things makes combat a lot easier too.
I would hazard a guess at your steam.dll file being missing, corrupt or in the wrong folder.
Make a copy of your Steam.dll file in the main steam folder and replace hers with it. Or reinstall steam.
Yeah she's reinstalling it at the moment, we'll see how it goes.
I googled it and saw some other issues with it from a few years ago (strangely) and some tried sticking a copied Steam.dll file in there, got a request for another missing file, then on replacing that Steam just didn't seem to work properly.
I wondered if there's something on her computer or the Uni network that's filtering some parts of the install.

You guys are definitely doing something wrong. Hit hard, and kick them when getting up. No pansy swings.

My biggest beef with their "trap" system, so far, is I don't see them until it is too late. I am apparently trying to be too sneaky and attack from afar.

If at all possible, I plan to.
Use it to KILL Norton, then laugh maniacally, then install AVG or Avast! and continue your life without the worry of Norton not liking your actions.
