Removing Old Video Drivers

I was curious if removing old video drivers before or after installing new ones is recommended and if it is what's the best way to go about it? I usually just install new ones but I've heard that getting rid of the old is supposedly what you should do first but I just don't know. Googling gives me several sites with programs that do this but I don't know which ones are worth my time. Anybody have any advice?

I've always used Driver Cleaner, now called Driver Sweeper. It does a fantastic job of removing drivers, registry entries and rogue files.

    before. Definitely before.

ATI and nVidia drivers come with an uninstaller. Use it, then reboot and install the new ones.
