3D games didn't come around until most folks were older, so there's less childhood nostalgia attached to them.
Also, it's hard to make a 3D game that continues to look good years after it's come out. Yoshi's Island is still gorgeous, but Mario 64 is an ugly mess, even though it was mindblowing it its day.
I don't know. A lot of 2D games haven't aged well.
I find that A Link to the Past aged better than Ocarina of Time.
I never said all of them. Besides, that PSX/N64 era was early 3D anyway. Too much reliance on blocky models.

Elevator Action
Pong(with knob)
The Atari 2600
Super Mario Bros. 2
Sonic Spinball
It's basically a nostalgia thing, us old men sitting around in our rocking chairs reminiscing about the days of yore, etc etc. Basically, everything was 'better' when we were younger!
Future Perfect is *SO* much fun, tell your friend that he has a supporter.
I call bullshit.
There is usually nothing nearly as good about the good old days as most people think.

While you may consider Super Mario 64 an ugly mess, it's graphics has certainly aged better than, say, Final Fantasy VII.

It's mostly nostalgia talking. Really, It's just a lot easier to impress a kid.
That and the fact you get all the shitty 3d games with the few current gen classics, it makes it easy to come to the false conclusion that games were better then. You just forget the Bubsies and remember the Super Metroids.

It's the result of people taking a hobby way too seriously. I'm sure this kind of shit goes on with car enthusiasts, footballs fans, or Starwars fans.
The OP needs to go back to those people and tell them to chill the shit out.

Super Mario Bros. 2
Sonic Spinball
Sonic Spinball aged poorly? I played it for the first time earlier this year as part of Sonic Mega Collection Plus and I think it's great.
I was recently having lunch with some friends and someone asked what our favorite games were.
I said Sonic The Hedgehog(Former Sega Fanboy), another said Super Mario Bros., then someone said TimeSplitters Future Perfect.
I didnt, but many other people grilled him about it. The fact that he didnt love an old 2D game.
So, why is it so bad to have a 3D game as you favorite game ever?
I mean, whats the problem?
Oh my god I love TimeSplitters. I don't know, I think it makes people feel good about themselves that they chose an old game. Perhaps because it makes them look like they are in the know. That game is probably in my top 5.
"Antihippy", I know your kind. You're just a drone, man! The government looks at you like an ant, toiling away in its little farm, dude! They don't care about you, man. The 4th dimension exists only to imprison you.

No I meant Sonic Spinball on the Game Gear(greatest handheld ever).
That monster that ate 6 AA batteries in 5 seconds is the best handheld ever?
My DS disagrees.
See, I can like new stuff best too.
Understand that I'm a HUGE Sega Fanboy(first console Genesis). The game gear was huge. But it had a backlit screen! A fairly large one too. It had a TV Antenna!
And on the 6 batteries: Realize that the Game Gear eats up 6 AAs in 5-6 hours. The nomad ate up 6AA in an hour and a half.
And I think the DS is second. Although I'm still not a fan of the Touch Screen in most games.
People who like platformers will still like the aged games.
For example, I still find a run through SMB 2 to be entertaining, but not merely for nostalgia purposes.
EDIT: Also, the Game Gear with an AC adapter was survivable, but obviously it defeated the purpose of it being a portable system. I really did like the Shining Force games that came out for the Game Gear, they were highly entertaining. Though it has been many years, so I don't know if I'd still feel that way if I played them today.
I do remember that I used to play... what was it? Riddick Bo Boxing I think on the Game Gear. And that, I know for SURE, is a game I wouldn't find entertaining today.

If you're referring to a specific version of a game released in multiple versions or on multiple platforms, you should say so. The Game Gear version of it is also in Sonic Mega Collection Plus, but I haven't played that one.
I'm pretty sure it's just the nostalgic factor. People that grew up playing SNES will have different favorite games than people that are growing to play ololhalo3.
Just like how some people think vinyl is the best.

I thought they were released in Japan only. Doesn't really matter anyway; they were compiled into Shining Force CD.
I don't think they were only in Japan, because I think I picked it up at Toys R Us when I was a kid for my birthday. I don't remember the exact name of it, but it was definitely in english. And oh so good. (Looks into seeing if he can acquire this "Shining Force CD" you speak of )
I still own the TENGEN tetris. Arguablt the best one cause it had the coolest music(duh-duhduhduh-duhduhduhduhduhday-daduhduh....I cant do it in text can I?)

Why have one favorite game? One of my most favorite game is Threads of Fate.
Has anyone mentioned the possibility that they called him on Future Perfect because only a moron would prefer that to the infinitely superior Timesplitters 2.
Also your favourite game can obviously be 3d if you want. It's your opinion. If they say it has to be 2d explain to them that they are narrow minded cunts because they are. Unless they have some persecuted scholar complex going on where 'only they understand true art'.
99% of 2d games are unplayable piles of shit anyways these days. And the few gems that still stand the test of time have sequels that are superior anyways.

That Tetris also had the coolest cheat ever. If you paused it and did the Konami code, your current block would become a I piece. But it only worked once per game (or level, don't remember).

TS3 is superior because you can actually play all the maps against CPU on either offense or defense for 'assault'.

TS2 only let you play offense.
It also had the Zeppelin track.
The only thing missing from 3 was Ice Station.
Ice Station is civilization.
Also 3 changed to fix look.
And had a terrible single player.
And none of the Quantum Leap charm of 2.
Trust me, science has been done on this. Science. 2 is better.

Three had an amazing single player! All those hilarious characters! And you look me in the eye and tell me the zombie level wasnt fucking amazing.
People now ~20-30 years old grew up in the 80's and early 90's. Games you grew up with have the advantage of nostalgia to make them seem perfect, because we're biased towards remembering nice things and not bad things about stuff we enjoyed overall.
It has nothing to do with the games in particular or the technology involved. In 20 years, 3D games will be everyone's childhood favorites, and the 18D games will be looked down upon as just not quite as amazing as Shaun White Snowboarding.

SHOCKING
If you're gonna say that 2D games don't age well then pick some better examples.
Also, Spoit, you got me.
I think that was implied by Speed's post.

It's also perfectly acceptable to have a very old 2D game as your favorite game ever.
We wish you no harm.
