The popular 1950s pinup models, Bettie Page, whose pictures some credit with helping pave the way for the sexual revolution of the 1960s, died from pneumonia a week after suffering a heart attack. She was 85.

So to hell with respect for the dead or any of the things she accomplished in her life. Afterall, Hot Topic was her idea.

She didn't exactly invent that look, you know.

And you're missing the point anyway. The point is not only that Bettie Page was a nude model, but she was a nude model (as the article above says) in her 30s, who often called the shots on her own photography, who was depicted not just in a state of undress or vulnerability but often wearing attire associated with female domination, complete with whips, or on rare occasion actually dominating somebody. She was more explicit than a lot of the nude photography of the era; whereas another model might be seen sitting nude on a bed in a stereotypically feminine position (like, say, brushing her hair) she would be seen in a corset showing bush or even spread-eagle (which was much rarer then in photos than it is now).

So she was a symbol that women could be strong, sexy, in control; that every aspect of the female body could be beautiful (and not just the non-hairy parts); and that she could do her thing during a period of time popularly (though not entirely fairly) associated with very male-dominant patriarchal roles and sexual repression. The 40s and 50s are the setting of a lot of collective fairy tales about the stability of white Christian conservative family values, and Bettie Page is a feminist antidote to those fairy tales. At the same time she's an antidote to the modern porn industry's exploitation of young women - she was no more a vapid hairless boob-jobbed Barbie doll than she was a 50s demure housewife. By offering a counterpoint to today's porn industry that seems to be obsessed with will-less mindless bodies that (if it weren't for inhumanly large breasts) should belong to prepubescent girls, her work maintains relevancy even now. That's why people admire her and emulate her.

every person who doesn't like an acquired taste always seems to think everyone who likes it is faking it. it should be an official fallacy.

the "no true scotch man" fallacy.

As I recall, she was also a devoted and value-keeping Christian, showing you can be part of the faith community without being a prudish drone.

If that Gretchen Mol movie is to be believed she retired from modelling when she became a Christian, though she said she wasn't ashamed of anything she did.

Can't go there right now. Can you sum it up for me? Because I thought she was born Betty Page and changed her name to Bettie Page. I didn't know that her name was ever Paige.

Hover and read the url. It links to an obit, though the rotating picture on the right half of the screen sometimes rotates to naked boobies.
