You might remember the stupid article saying that the "PS3 is doomed, abloo, abloo." Now you have a response to it!
    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/12/15/AR2008121500870.html
CNN has declared Sony's PS3 "a sinking ship" riffing off last Thursday's "plummeting" NPD sales results. CNN bases its gloomy diagnosis on Sony's sales plunge of 19 points, compared to sales in November 2007. That's a fair criticism, but it isolates a superficially negative statistic while ignoring the fact that this November only included two days of post-holiday sales (11/28 - 11/29) compared to last year's eight total (11/23 - 11/30). I'm speculating here, but if you could adjust for that difference, it's very likely PS3 sales would have increased, however slightly, year-over-year.

What's more, Sony rightly points out that the PS3 has seen hardware sales grow 60% year-to-date. I realize the PS3 wasn't selling well in 2007, so that figure's less impressive than it sounds, but growth is growth, any way you slice it. What's more, look at PS3 and Xbox 360 units sold in total worldwide, and Sony pretty much throughout 2008 has actually been playing catchup.

Then there's the PlayStation brand overall, which when you factor in the PSP and PS2, topped 1 million units, more than the Xbox 360's 836,000. The PlayStation brand has in fact pretty easily muscled past the Xbox brand practically every month since the PS3's launch. Sony's margins on the PSP and PS2 are almost certainly better than the PS3's, so which company's actually been more profitable in overall unit sales is less obvious than it seems.

On the other hand, CNN's whacking the nail on the head when it raises the problem of the PlayStation 3's price. The recession's been on well and long enough for Sony to have reacted by now, and yet it's stubbornly clung to that $400 entry point. Had it dropped the PS3's price to $300 or even $350 it's a safe bet October and November's numbers would've tallied much more favorably. Both Microsoft and Sony have a solid stable of exclusives, and both have interesting companion services, but it's price and not NXE/Netflix or PlayStation Home that's deciding the battle at the moment.

    Quick points...

CNN's right that the video-game industry isn't recession proof. Nothing is. The rest of us saying as much merely mean "recession-proof-so-far," which it clearly is compared to other ebbing economic indices.

CNN says the differences between Blu-ray and DVD are hard to see on a TV less than 50". I suppose that'd be true if your eyes are somehow genetically fixed at 720 x 480 (NTSC). For the rest of us, Blu-ray at even 720p (1280 x 720) with all its other commensurate upticks in sample rates and color quality is shockingly better than the visuals output of the average DVD.

And finally, "the PS3 just doesn't have any must-have titles exclusive to the console." Really? I guess CNN's not familiar (or perhaps just not partial to) exclusives like Metal Gear Solid 4, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Ratchet & Clank Future, Wipeout HD, Valkyria Chronicles, the original Resistance: Fall of Man (twice the game the sequel is, in my opinion), and MLB 08: The Show. When you're talking new unit sales, you count the whole history of notable exclusives, not just the last month or two of holiday attention-grabbers.

Could you post the latest PAL charts?

So apparently LBP has been on sale in the UK, explaining the jump.
There has also been advertising for it, and we are getting closer to Christmas. The Raving Rabbids, PS3 fallout, and Cooking Guide games also saw large boosts.

This is about the all formats UK chart:
One week to go until the All Formats Christmas Chart and the top 3 games are all non-movers, with sales of ‘Call of Duty: World at War’ rising by 2%, ‘Mario Kart Wii’ sales up by 1% and ‘FIFA 09’ sales down 1%.

The gap between Call of Duty at No1 and Mario Kart Wii at No2 is 27,000 units, leaving Nintendo with it all to do in the coming week in order to claim what would be the Japanese giant’s first Christmas No1 since N64 ‘Zelda Ocarina of Time’ 10 years ago. If Activision Blizzard can hold on to the No1 spot for another week they will claim the longest uninterrupted All Formats chart topping run-in for a Christmas No1, with 6 consecutive weeks. Sales of the Top 6 games are relatively flat, meaning a 3% rise in sales for ‘Need for Speed: Undercover’ is enough to drive it up one place to No4, while a 3% drop in ‘Brain Training’ sales pushes it down one place to No5. The price-promoted ‘Fallout 3’ is still a Top 10 contender with sales up 6%, rising from No7 to No6. Nintendo still have 4 Top 10 games with ‘Wii Play’ up 16% in sales, up from No9 to No7 and ‘Wii Fit’ (-5%) holding at No8. ‘Guitar Hero: World Tour’ is on song this week, sales up 18%, rising from No10 to No9, while ‘Tomb Raider: Underworld’ almost slips out of the Top 10, down from No6 to No10.

As is normal for this week of the year there are no new entries that make the Top 40, but outside the All Formats Top 10 there are several strong climbers, including the bundled ‘Lego Indiana Jones’ (+31%) up from No13 to No11, ‘Sonic Unleashed’ (+87%) up from No33 to No12, the competitively priced ‘Quantum of Solace’ (+53%) up from No27 to No13 and ‘LittleBigPlanet’ up from No29 to No16 (sales up 58%, handing it No1 in the PS3 Chart ahead of CoD).

Captain Fucking Obvious to the rescue!
Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter estimated in a Monday research note that Take-Two's GTA-related revenues will drop by about half in fiscal 2009 when compared to fiscal 2008.

"A decline of this magnitude, offset in part by growth in the rest of the company’s business, will impact earnings by around 60 cents per share," he wrote.

Pachter added, "At the same time, the contracts of key Rockstar employees Sam and Dan Houser expire in February 2009; we question whether Take-Two can retain them, and if so, at what cost."

At noon EST, Take-Two shares were down 8 percent to $11.40.

Take-Two recently announced that Xbox 360-exclusive GTA IV add-on content, "The Lost and Damned," would be available for download February 17. Pachter expects revenue from the DLC to be "modest," while re-orders for GTA are projected to be minimal, he said.

Today, the publisher confirmed a March release date for GTA: Chinatown Wars for Nintendo DS.

Take-Two, whose earnings release on Wednesday, will report fiscal Q4 sales of $290 million, Pachter estimates. The publisher's Q4 guidance calls for sales in the range of $285-$335 million, with non-GAAP earnings per share of 1 to 5 cents.

The analyst expects an optimistic fiscal 2009 forecast from Take-Two management, but due to declining GTA sales and "no compelling games" in the next year, the publisher may fall short of its estimates, Pachter said. He added that Take-Two's guidance for 2009 will likely be above consensus estimates for revenue of $1.39 billion and pro forma EPS of $1.32, but he believes even those figures are too high.

He also stated that EA is not expected to renew its buyout offer for Take-Two, at least in the "next several months."

I've heard it is number 20 in the all formats charts. It is a good reason why you don't see many developers releasing exclusives anymore.

Kung-Fu Panda and LEGO Indiana Jones have been joined at the hip in a whole suite of cheap deals, some including pads, bundled with new consoles etc. They will find their way into many homes this Xmas, mine included (my bro has bought them for me on the uber-cheap!)

For some reason, people like this guy don't understand what a system seller is.

The game that was released six months ago that didn't convince your buddy to buy the PS3 isn't gonna work when he rolls around and says, "What should I get a PS3 for?"

I generally take that to mean "What games are coming out for it that are cool looking?"

I'm fairly certain that they're counting package deals hence Kung-Fu Panda and LEGO Indiana Jones are charting at the same spot. Also, the relative failure of PoP, ME, and Dead Space is calling for a change in labeling. 360/PS3 gamers aren't "core" gamers, they're mainstream and everyone needs a bitch slap for not buying those games.

Then there's the PlayStation brand overall, which when you factor in the PSP and PS2, topped 1 million units, more than the Xbox 360's 836,000. The PlayStation brand has in fact pretty easily muscled past the Xbox brand practically every month since the PS3's launch.

I hope you guys don't mind if I bring this stuff over from the last thread.

Next I'm planning to get EA's and maybe even THQ's platform splits from 3 years after the last gen started. That is, see how long PS1 games stuck around in publishers' sales after the PS2 launched.

So here is some raw stuff from the THQ report. Even so I stripped out a ton of stuff to make it readable.

Nice concept, but every time I actually had to fight someone, I hated it. Every time the wonky mechanics resulted in my death, I hated it. They should have been more lenient with the games physics. Like Assassin's Creed or Tomb Raider. I shouldn't have to be spot on for her to grab a ledge.

Well, I agree with "unprepared", but I'm curious why Wii sales aren't that high? Is it because they simply haven't made as many as they should? Or did the titles they produce just tank? For example, how did the MySims franchise do? Did they expect the Wii versions of Facebreaker or the All-Play lineup of EA Sports games to sell better than they actually did?

According to EA a while back, MySims did very well. I know that it broke 5-600K....heck, I wouldn't be surprised if it did better than that. It sold well enough that EA made a sequel, and it is actually a really fun game.

Facebreaker was a huge flop on all consoles.
The game was released on September 4, 2008. As of October 2008, the game has sold 52,000 units in Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 combined.

Hm, Spore isn't kicking the shit out of every other game like the hype train suggested it would. Sure, it's doing well against WoW, but it's telling that the expansion pack is number 18 on the list.

For example, how did the MySims franchise do?

I don't want to get into the middle of this discussion, but the Console sims games do really well. Sims 2 on consoles did 1M+ sales (across ds, wii, psp, ps2 in the USA), and MySims on Wii+DS did 1.8 million sales in the USA. But EA has lots of highly successful franchises on the Wii. And the All Sports games may not do super awesome, but the Tiger Woods ones do absurdly well on the Wii.

Again we have a lot of PS2 sales for FY 2008 beating out all the other platforms. And PS3 games sales being so close to Wii sales really shows how unprepared for Nintendomination EA really was.

MySims sold 1.8 million copies across DS+Wii in the USA alone

World of Warcraft topped PC sales?

    Fancy that

It's obviously not shocking that WoTLK is on the top of the list, but it is a bit harrowing to see OG WoW still in the top 20.
