Infinity Ward sold a million copies of their map pack for COD4 in a day. DLC is not only incredibly profitable but the money, broadly speaking, goes direct to the developer instead of getting cut apart by retailers and publishers.

That's why so many companies try to sell you content already on the disc. Ie Scamco.

That's actually why I don't mind the idea of DLC so much. It's like a price hike to offset climbing development costs, except a customer can choose not to pay it.

I consider myself a "hardcore gamer" or whatever, and when looking at the 360, I honestly thought to myself, "I don't need a hard drive, the Memory card will be plenty of room!" But soon after I got the Arcade unit, I went out a grabbed a 20 gigger, because I saw all the awesome shit I was missing out on. Before buying it, even as an enthusiast, I really didn't know the scope of everything Live offered. Once I experienced it, though, I needed in.

DS console sales break 31 million following record-breaking 2008 performance

Nintendo has sold 8.3 million units of its Wii console in 2008, making it the largest annual home console seller in European history.

The figure is a 58 per cent increase over 2007, and takes the total European Wii installed base to 14.2 million units.

Nintendo’s DS also broke European records by selling over 11.2 million units in 2008, which happens to be the largest annual sales figure for any games console in European history. The DS has now sold 31 million units in Europe.

“The sales trend on both Wii and Nintendo DS, hardware and software during 2008 shows that more and more people in Europe are enjoying video games as part of their daily lives,” said Nintendo of Europe MD, Marketing and PR Laurent Fischer. “This proves that Nintendo’s wish to expand the gaming population has strong potential in Europe.”

680K for a cable program is actually pretty decent. The cable channels usually can't pull in anywhere near the numbers the big networks can.

More telling is the fact that the ratings are the second-lowest for the event since 2004.

So it's a tossup whether it'll get canceled or not.

Guess who's complaining about the crush of shovelware on the Wii?

    The maker of Carnival Games.
The global boss of 2K has predicted that publishers bringing non-licensed games to Wii this year could struggle – as the console’s market is “flooded by crappy titles”.

Speaking to MCV, Christoph Hartmann said that his company would find it difficult to secure the success it has enjoyed with its Carnival game if it had to release it today.

He said: “Where people go wrong in the casual market is that, while the development costs are exploding on the casual side, they’re treating the Wii like the old PC market – making cheap, accessible games. They think if they make ten titles and two are hits, they will finance the other eight. “But they forget these eight crappy titles will flood the market and will lead to problems in terms of production – and upset retailers. Also, the consumer will be pissed off because they’ll be confused.”

Of 2K’s own success on Wii with Carnival, Hartmann said that getting the title early to market was key.

He added: “Had we released it last week, it would have been much tougher. There’s far too much stuff in the Wii market [now] and it’s hard to shine. While the Wii is the strongest growing console, it’s a risk not to have well known brands in your games.”

One thing low budget or shovelware developers either cant do, or dont do, is advertise. If a 3rd party steps their game up and doesnt put a marketing force behind it, then yes, you're going to get swept under.

Like Fragile is coming out soon in Japan, but that Vinnk guy from GAF was in a store yesterday and didnt realize it because there were no signs/advertising. No presence at TGS. Sent to die.

I doubt it. The night the VGAs aired there was a Giants/Cowboys game on, which was apparently one of the most-watched Sunday night football games ever. Same audience, really, so there's a rationale for Spike to keep it going.

gawd, what a clusterfuck backwards compatibility was this generation. nintendo escaped the madness by simply releasing the same system twice in new dressings. Oh snap!

I still think BC is a bit of a dodge anyway. It's a nice enough thing when it works, but no matter how many older games I might still want to play, I'd just use my older system to play it. Until SONY did it with the PS2, nobody really thought much about it beyond 'wouldn't it be nice' levels. Now it's expected and nobody, save maybe Nintendo, is doing it right.

Pretty much this. I don't understand why BC is such an important feature. I don't sell my old consoles. I learned a long time ago that if I sold a game, I would later regret it. So I don't.

I remember when the SNES came out, and the manual gave you specific directions on how to hook up both consoles (NES+SNES) at the same time. Your old console doesn't suddenly stop working the second a new one comes out...

Of course, this is consoles....Portables are a whole different ball game.

Some of us never owned a PS2 in the first place.

I guess I'm just too used to things like movies--just because VHS was still selling after DVD came out didn't mean that old movies were never brought over to DVD. Same goes for Blu Ray. If I were a game designer, I wouldn't want my really classic pieces to vanish. I'd want things like SotC brought over to the PS3 in some way just so that people could continue to enjoy it even if they were new to the scene.

Certain classics shouldn't die just because the console they were on is no longer the current gen.

So a while back Kotaku had this summary of a Hellforge article:
Hellforge posits that 2008 was the worst year on record for MMOs. But the "collapse" had nothing to do with the genre's viability, and everything to do with hubris and poor decisions by game-makers.

The wreckage includes three titles whose names are either punchlines by now or dangerously close: Hellgate: London, Age of Conan, and the dumpstered Tabula Rasa, joined by the patched-too-late Pirates of the Burning Sea, as examples of how not to run an MMO railroad.

Hellgate cratered thanks to bad management, bad decisions and their reversals, and its bastard sibling Tabula Rasa was so awful Lord British decided to leave Earth rather than deal with the mess. Pirates of the Burning Sea patched its problems, but way too late to save itself. Age of Conan, as discussed before, stopped trying after you got past level 20. Bottom line, Hellgate and Tabula Rasa's servers are shutting down entirely (or already have) and the other two have merged or closed many of theirs too.

The lessons? Listen to beta testers; get the launch right, because patches won't save your asses, and if you're innovating some new gameplay mechanic, do it like you mean it. A successful MMO depends on a huge investment of a gamer's time. The investment on the development/publishing end should be total, too.

This sort of makes me think that in hindsight, it is obvious that running a competitive RTS like Starcraft was excellent preparation for taking over the MMO world. To keep Starcraft going they had to obsess over balance, patch like crazy and somehow pick the gold out of the dross of feedback from gamers.

It also sort of makes me worry about how Bioware is going to fare since none of these things are really their strong suit. And the idea of Bethesda making a MMO is downright scary even if you could describe their current RPGS as being very close to single player MMOs.

Looks like it's that time of the month.

10 predictors, estimates on 360, NDS, PS2, and PSP are all relatively close. The PS3 and Wii are gonna make and break people, there are estimates 100+% away from each other. Cloudeagle wins the award for most pessimistic estimator, he had the lowest prediction on each console with one exception - the PS2. Also, I very likely won't be around to post results until several hours after numbers are revealed but I'm sure guys will figure out if you got creamed or not.

Eidos has confirmed that it is in early talks for a potential acquisition of the publisher.

The confirmation comes off the back of a share price jump for the Britsoft firm, which owns the Tomb Raider and Hitman IPs and a number of studios around the world.

"The Board can announce that it has received a preliminary approach which may or may not lead to an offer being made for the Company," a statement from the publisher said.

"Eidos emphasises that discussions are at a very early stage and that there can be no assurance that an offer will be forthcoming."

Should the acquisition go ahead, the smart money’s on Warner Bros swooping for the firm.

The Hollywood entertainment firm already owns 20 per cent in the publisher. MCV understands that the media giant has been in regular negotiations with the Tomb Raider publisher over the past year.

The pair have shown signs of flirting to do a deal for some time – with indicators including Eidos reducing restrictions on Warner’s buying power last October. The deal saw Eidos’ share price rocket.
Here is a preemptive "It was nie knowing ya."

Why the fuck can't the ps3 play psp games? The ps3 should be powerful enough and the psp hardware is fairly straight forward like the ps1 it should be "easy" to write an emulator for. Then when we buy a psp game off of psn we should be able to play it direclty on the ps3. Or if you want to play a UMD game, you hook the psp to the ps3 via usb. (has the added benefit of charging the psp) The emulator should also come with "Adhoc party thing" builtin. So you could play monster hunter on the big screen with a dualshock 3.

This is what Sony should have spent their time on rather than Home.

Let me tell you about Demon's Souls....
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.
