Having come into some fortune this holiday season, I find myself with a DS, but without a good supply of games. Aside from Chrono Trigger (which I will get), what games would you suggest that I should buy? I like RPGs, tactical games, and what I shall term "interesting" games, in which the genre is odd or unique.
Talk to me about titles I may not have heard of too. I can think of Tactics, Advance Wars, and Phoenix Wright as examples of the above, but what would you recommend that I might not have?
You might want to give Front Mission a go. It's a port/remake of a Square SNES strategy-RPG. With big robots.
Doesn't get enough praise imo. If you can get past the 16-bit presentation, you might love it. To be fair, it was actually one of the better looking SNES games anyway.
The New Super Mario Brothers and Mario Kart are pretty much required games and perfect for when you're sick of getting killed in that RPG and need a chance to refocus. Most of the strategy and RPGs I love on the DS have been mentioned, but for interesting Korg DS 10 and Line Rider 2 should fit the bill.
I think that the internet has been for years on the path to creating what is essentially an electronic Necronomicon: A collection of blasphemous unrealities so perverse that to even glimpse at its contents, if but for a moment, is to irrevocably forfeit a portion of your sanity.

-Elite Beat Agents (but once its over, it's over. I've beaten it on the hardest difficulty, and I havent had an urge to go back)
-Phoenix Wright series (addictive, but draining. I beat the first one, loved it, but haven't had the urge to put #2 in yet. I am excited to get to it, but it requires some time to play, so I haven't dove back in yet)
-Feel The Magic XX+XY (Best set of random mini-games possibly ever. Very very very creative, great music. I love this game, and its sequal, Rub Rabbits)

I'll go ahead and echo Hotel Dusk. Phoenix Wright is great too, but really Chrono Trigger will probably do you just fine for a while. No need to buy a pile of games right away.

If RPGs are your thing get Final Fantasy 3. And Etrian Odyssey (followed up by part 2). Careful, EO is brutal.
Gonna second support for the Castlevania games. Like, all of them. Not gonna waste time on which of them is better than the others, they're all great.
Definitely The World Ends With You, since you said you like RPG's. And yes, CT DS is a good choice as well, I've been enjoying it myself, been going through the Lost Sanctum.
The DS has a library of popular games that very rarely fail to impress, so you really aren't looking at a shortage of great games to get. With that said, and seeing that you like rpgs, The World Ends With You and Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer are my top picks for games (on any system) that I've played this year. TWEWY is fantastically original on both the story and gameplay ends, while Shiren is roguelike sex.

The World Ends With You is the most original RPG to come out on any system in quite a while. There's also a ton of replay value after finishing it through pin collecting and filling out the journal (or whatever it's called) that fleshes out the story more. Seriously, just get the damn thing. It's a great new IP from Square Enix that needs more entries in the series.
FFIV is a FANTASTIC remake. Granted, I never played any of the previous incarnations, but once I started this one I just couldn't put it down. The 3D models are very well done. They look great and have really smooth animations to them. Dragon Quest IV got a 2D/3D remake as well, though I haven't played it yet and so can't speak for how good it is. Hopefully it'll be sitting under the tree on the 25th,
Also, if you can find it, Meteos is a great puzzle game that's unique to the DS (aside from Meteos Wars on the 360). And if you're looking for stuff to import, Jump Ultimate Stars is fantastic. It's basically a portable Smash Bros. with Shonen Jump characters. The game is entirely in Japanese, but is perfectly playable to anyone that doesn't know the language. There are some translations/guides online as well if you really need them (GameFAQs).
Apart from all the other great games already mentioned, I've been having a great time with Ninja Town. If you like Tower Defense games, you'll like this one. The story is actually kind of funny too. There are businessman ninjas who slow enemies by making them look at charts and graphs, a special move called "Get off my Lawn", all kinds of wierd stuff...
Also during the buy 2 get 1 free madness I got pokemon pearl to go with my diamond.
I'm halfway through FF4 and Chrono Trigger as well. I have so much gaming ahead of me.

Rocket Slime.
I don't know why, but I could just spend hours upon hours in that game, doing the same fights over and over again.
No, seriously. I played the shit out of that game. So much value for money.
Other than that, it has got to be Phantom Hourglass, Phoenix Wright 1+3, Apollo Justice, Chrono Trigger and Advance wars DS. There are others, but those had the most impact on me.
I have a case that holds 3 DS games, then I've got whatever is crammed into my DS. I always have Tetris DS and Meteos in there, then one RPG and whatever I am playing at the time in my DS. Right now its Chrono Trigger. Last month it was Castlevania.
The DS just has an amazing library and I consider it to be this generation's PS2.
Shiren was wired into my DS for a period of around 2 months and I only stopped playing out of disgust for myself when I lost my phat loot due to an gigantic and entirely avoidable self-imposed cock-up.
I have been thoroughly enjoying Dragon Quest (IV?) Chapters of the Chosen. It's nothing amazing and the gameplay is a bit old-school (obviously) but I've been happily dropping my free time into it at the moment. The regional accents are a delight.
Apart from those two I'd say PUZZLE QUEST. It is just unfair how enjoyable the game is and how much depth there is to ability selection/play later on in the game. If I had to recommend one game from the list it would be Puzzle Quest.

For casual play, Contra 4 or Puyo Pop Fever(good luck finding it).

I've been having a good time with Lock's Quest, too.
also:
The World Ends with You
Ouendan
Also I'd consider Wario Ware Twisted to be a DS must have even though it's not actually a DS game, it's a GBA game.
But if it was the second I could heartily recommend the craptacular Yoshi's Island DS. Fucking Yoshi's Story all over again :x

Pretty much always in my DS.

If it's the latter, Elite Beat Agents and Ouendan (1 and 2) are both excellent suggestions. I also highly recommend Rhythm Tengoku Gold.
For the deeper gameplay, I'd go with The World Ends With You. Holy shit that game is good.
I used to see the game dirt cheap all the time. $9.99 at Toys R Us, and $15 at Wal-Mart (Which was bundled with a case and some extra styluses)
But now that Christmas is here and I actually want to buy it for someone, nope, can't find it anywhere.

I would list all of my own "must haves," but then my list that I'd post would be 30 some odd games long.

It took far too many posts for this to come up.
Also, Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword.
And then pay whatever you have to for Tetris DS
