I'm home for Christmas and i figured I'd fire up BG2. I've decided on assassin but can't for the life of me remember the cap for hide in shadows and move silently, and I can't find the right information I need on the regular bg2 fan sites.
Thought i'd post here rather than H/A cause im hoping more of you here might have my answer.
-thanks
what a work of art is man, and the most boring choice you can make
The cap is certainly above 100. I and my girlfriend are playing through BG2 and ToB right now, and she's put over 100 points into Hide in Shadows and Move Silently (currently, the skills are at around 150). It actually hasn't been all that useful except for scouting, but when she scouts, she uses Find Trap instead (we haven't been able to use the two concurrently, for some reason). When she does move silently, she slaps on Boots of Elvenkind and some other things. For backstabbing, she just uses the High Level Ability (HLA) of Assassination, which makes every attack for the next 2 rounds a backstab.
We haven't really run into a situation yet where more than 120 Move Silently is needed for skulking around. Same with Hide in Shadows (for initial hiding). Contrast to Find Traps, where she needed above 150 to even see some of the traps, and she had to slap on some magic items to disarm them. Sheesh. This was near the end of SoA.
If you really need a thief, I'd suggest Jan Jansen, as he has a TON of custom equipment for thieving that only he can wear (until you get the HLA of Use Any Item, of course). He's also an Illusionist to boot. Save the thieving for the NPCs (who seem to all be better at it than the PCs).

I had a fair bit of luck with a solo Blade, too. What level did you dual at?
