Screw this, since I will likely not get a reply for my support ticket until the end of the Mayan calendar, I will download the game and pay the fees for busting my cap.
I will bitch for ages until Valve has either refunded me or I've pierced the atmosphere with my screams of anger.
Can you not return it to the store and exchange it for a different copy?
Tried it. Still the same error: I click on "install" and then nothing happens. It seems that the problem is that Steam can't recognize that I've got the DVD in the drive.

Yay for DRM!
There's this application, called "Revo uninstaller" which is supposed to uninstall all traces left by your software. Maybe you can try that.
Fantastic, got those invites. But despite the huge amount of people in those groups, every single server is empty?
Your best bet is to join the chat room and then see if any slots are going, or start a game up and wait for people to join.
Pretty much. There's a lot of versus that goes on, and for some reason the VS servers get recent to Campaign a lot. With achievement glitches, most people elect to start from a lobby.

If you have another PC available, you can try the following.
Install steam, install L4D, then either:
-copy all relevant .gcfs and files from program files/steam/steamapps/common/
-right click on L4D in the games window -> Properties -> backup game files...
Yeah, it should be possible to copy the files off the CD and install. Really this shouldn't be a DRM issue...Steam games don't really need any media-related DRM, as their protection comes from the Steam app and your account.
But the program that's not doing its job right now is Steam. It's supposed to decode the files on the DVD, but it won't. So it is a DRM issue. If this game had a normal installer, I wouldn't have this problem.
I noticed that you can sometimes get 20 damage in 1 hit as a Hunter by just running up to the survivors mashing right click.
Hunters in vs do 10 damage from the front, 20 damage from behind.
This is true of all infected; damage from regular zombies doubles when they hit you from behind.
I did a test of this in the single-player campaign and found the opposite was true for common infected. On expert common infected did 20 damage to my face and 10 damage to my back. Hunters, smokers, and boomers did the same amount of claw damage front or back.

My mistake. Thanks for the correction.
Once upon a time, a bird in hand was worth two in the bush. Then the infection came. Four immune humans fight bitter odds for the slim hope of survival. The Infected were fast and brutal. To make matters worse, there seemed to be some hostile god controlling their fate, just when thing seemed impossible, the stalwart survivors would catch a break, but they knew that they were always only one critical mistake away from death. Survival comes from learning lessons every day in order to delay that inevitable mistake and hopefully lesson its severity.
Today they learned one such lesson: a zombie in the face is worth two at the back. 8-)
man we just beat most of death toll on expert thinking it was advanced the entire time. I thought we were just pretty bad because we were screwing around. We'd shoot the witch every time and it really wasn't that bad.
Strangely, i've had more difficult srs expert runs than this one.

To be fair, we did do the finale on advanced. But fun times were had, and I made it to the boat with the oil tank.
Oh yeah, how could I forget to mention that I finally landed a 25 point pounce tonight? NM3, in front of the gas station.
I was, umm.....Slightly excited. My previous best was a lucky 16 or 18 pointer. I say lucky, because my intent was to leap down and start melee swiping, not actually land on somebody.

Got my first tonight as well. I've had several 23 pointers, but 25 had eluded me. This one was right as the survivors left the apartment on NM 1 - I even managed to steer just a tad to be able to stick the landing. Most satisfying.
I wish higher damage pounces had a more significant stagger effect, but I guess that would just be adding insult (and more injury) to injury.
Well with 5 gigs I was gonna bust my limit by 2 gigs. So it should be alright.
Man, I thought only the aussies had to deal with that nonsense. Is Canada a barren wasteland, devoid of unlimited broadband for $25/month?
We pay 40$/month (and that's with the rebates we get from having TV with my ISP and having a one year contract) to get 7 Mbits and a cap of 20 gigs for downloads.
It sucks.

Hahaha, I got booted for the best reason ever tonight. As my team (me and three randoms who all know each other) makes its way through the No Mercy versus campaign, one dude on the other team goes through the trouble of sending not one, but two voice messages to our entire team about how the infected are trying to glitch the game and screw us over. On top of that, he sticks out the entire campaign instead of dropping when the cheaters on his team to get the server shut down by leaving.
How does my team pay the guy back? They try to cram under the ramp on NM5 (which I screwed them up with by throwing a pipe bomb over there and deliberately running around away from them to make myself a target). Even worse than that, when this awesome guy gets his turn as survivor, my team sets up to try and get the cheap smoker kill on the roof.
At this point, it's the helpful guy and three bots, so the only way they'll get up the ladder is if he's already up there. I know that the smoker kill is normally a scummy tactic anyway, but the way this guy has helped us out makes it about ten times worse. Initially, I position myself to hunter pounce the guy as soon as the smoker grabs him but the guy is expecting all the infected to be up there. He keeps poking his head up, then going back down. Deciding that I can fix this a better way, I hop over to the cheap-ass smoker and melee him in the back.
I did not account for the fact that the swipe would send the smoker clear off the entire roof. Hilarious, but unintentional. Thus, I end up getting booted for being an anti-dick and never felt bad for an instant about it.
So I think I may be mentally challenged, just spent 40 minutes trying to get into Toons' Dead Air versus game. At first I didn't download the Dead Air versus map, then I proceeded to accidentally join another game when Raoul left.
Well with 5 gigs I was gonna bust my limit by 2 gigs. So it should be alright.

You're paying less than I am for a faster line than mine with a higher cap to boot.
Dead Air versus is fun. Its a little buggy, and pretty fucking hard for infected most of the time. Except for the finale. I very seriously doubt a team of survivors could live through a tank when he has all those trailers to smack around.
Also, I was the first tank. "Alright, I'm the Tan- Oh I fell off the building." But I managed to climb back up and kill 3 of them, with my teammates getting Zoey.
I'm gonna do easy. But you say "What? Easy? Easy is easy, don't do that." And I say but we're all gonna do melee only. And you say "But fucking hell its still easy you RETARDED ASSCOCK!". And I'm gonna say chill the fuck out, and you forgot one thing:
Yeah. Melee only. 160 hits. Are you a bad enough dude?

It has the potential to be great for infected with a few more ladders. As it was, there are a lot of fun pounce positions.
Earlier while playing Versus on Map 5 of No Mercy I was to be the Tank and was all excited but then it spawned me inside of a concrete chunk and I couldnt move and then got killed. I was pissed but decided to move on.
So then while we were doing ok it says some other guy is going to be the second Tank....Im like...ok, well, if he gets killed the chopper comes, we need to pump it up here. You know what happened? The Tank never spawned. It had the music but it didnt come so they couldnt kill it. So the Chopper never came.
After a good 10 minutes of them holed up inside the building probably wondering what the fuck was up, they ran out to where the chopper would be, all 4 of them alive.
All of a sudden there was some giant....blast of...something. I dont know what, but all I saw was some weird blast and then 2 people got sent right the fuck off the roof, 1 guy was downed, and the other guy had a small amount of life left which we then killed. I have no clue what the fuck happened but hell yes.

I know that melee does no actual damage but maybe he means it takes 160 melees to kill a tank?

Havent done in this game yet, but in the demo we took down a tank using only melee.
But for some reason, no one else was with me when it came to trying to take down a witch using only melee.
