I worked 8 hours almost every day this summer in a factory. It sucked a lot. And then I blew all the money I made by the end of the summer! Thanks a lot, PAX.
I'll be done with work on the 23rd, and be off till' the 6th or so of Jan
I have a mere 2 classes left between me and a Master's degree, then I can get a job making a fair amount.
yeah
back when I was de facto store manager for a blockbuster I drove 40 minutes every morning to open the store at 8, then stayed until we closed at 11. Did this for everyday except saturdays and sundays when i got to leave at 6pm for the weekend manager to take over. Did that bullshit for about a month.
I'm not even shitting you. It was scheduled for 16 hours. We started in the morning on concepting one proposal which moved into concepting for a second. Then we wrote them and shipped them.
Then I went home and slept off the drinking we did in the last 4 hours of the meeting.
Let's see, last May I probably worked every single day, doing 7:30 AM-10:30 PMon the weekdays the first half of the month, and 7:30 to 12:30 the last half. And I'll get to do that again this spring.
Five day week of 11 hour shifts in a food processing plant...AS THEIR BACTERIOLOGIST. They were having me fill in for another QA person who actually made sure all the machines were running properly during the 11 hour processing day.
Then I had to work a few hours on the weekend.
The kicker, I was not paid time and a half, since small farms are exempt from that rule.
I may have some work for the new year, serving drinks and whatnot.
Two hours to get to work, two hours back (if I'm lucky and can catch the train and both ferries during the holidays), all for what will probably amount to about £100.
But dammit, that's like over a term's food budget for me, so it's worth it.

Do you guys remember when we won the 40-hour work week and weekends off and were able to have labor unions without companies sending thugs to bust you up anymore?
After Hurricane Gustav me and my best friend took short-term jobs for a disaster recovery company in South Louisiana (the fucking SWAMP, son!) as database managers to process receipts for recovery projects such as tree/debris removal. It paid 20/hour + 40 hrs += overtime. First week i worked 14-16 hour days, every day. My first check was for 105 hours in 7 days. We lived in the New Orleans Metro Area. Our office was in Thibodeaux, louisiana. About 1.5 hours from my house. Do the math.
After that I realized I needed to finish my thesis to get my master's degree , and the hours were not conducive to my academic obligations (no class, just writing). However, my friend stayed with them for three months. So really, I'm the wimp that quit. My friend is the trooper that dealt with hell for three months in order to stay in Louisiana with all of his friends (he moved from Chiccago a week before the hurricane this year).
I honestly hate not working. During the summer it's fine because I have other people working so money isn't a problem. Winter is completely different though. It's just me and my brother. I pay him a lions share of what is made in order to keep him around.

I had already planned to take all of Christmas week of for vacation, then I got most of this week off for recovery.
My mom had surgery a few days ago and has 6 fucking weeks off now. She's an RN at a nursing home. I told her that by the time she gets back to work, everybody's gonna be dead. It'll be like a whole new job.

I'll be working on Christmas Eve, Christmas, and New Year's. Time and a half for all, plus an extra vacation day for each of those holidays worked. Then I get two weeks paid vacation in January, two in February, two in June, and then two in either October or November. I love union jobs.

Me and my friend have gone one better and plan to start a honeypot assassin team when we graduate.
You're planning on extorting Winnie the Pooh?
Asshole.
You one of those 25/8 guys I keep hearing rumors of?
I have had to work through the weekend though. It's no big deal and you should probably try to whine less.

Yeah his hourly isn't super high. But once you start racking up that overtime it pays huge.

I work 37.5 hours a week. No more, no less (sadly).
actually this also happens when i take one single day off
i cannot wait to start the new job
I also get to work on Christmas day AND New years day!
On Christmas day I am making around $40/hour though.
Life's hard.
I enjoy my 9-5:30, M-F job so much more because I have four years of that to look back on.
You're getting a paycut on a holiday?
That sucks.
