Yeah, they've been touting that all week. As someone said, the DLC sales sort of even things out. People will flock to the GH brand no matter what its attached to. There are Guitar Hero boxers, Guitaro Hero Cheez-Its, and I wouldn't be surprised to see Guitar Hero Pregnancy Tests in a couple of weeks.
I honestly can't go back to the opaque fret boards with round notes that make it hard to see what's a HOPO and not. I'm too used to being able to chain Overdrive now and not seeing all the notes turn blue. I honestly can't go back to GH without struggling.

I honestly haven't even considered looking GH:WT. GH 3 ruined it for me. I bought it, played 10 minutes and promptly decided it wasn't a total loss as the Les Paul was pretty sweet. Though the Oasis love as well several other awesome bands on there do make it hard somedays.
Don't you think the fact that there was a Rock Rand 1 slowed sales of the RB2 complete set? I mean, people who already have the set aren't going to buy another one. The Guitar Hero brand didn't have drums/mic prior to this year's release.
The main thing that kept RB2's yearly sales down is that the Wii version didn't release until a couple days before Christmas.
The Wii version of the original RB was the best-selling version by far, whether you consider it "gimped" or not.
I'm not sure that the gap with Guitar Hero would have been closed entirely if the Wii version was on time with the others, but it would have likely been narrowed considerably.
It's also not like Rock Band is entering the market with major entrenched competition. GH might have the 'name', but it's only two years older as a franchise. We're not talking about a juggernaut like Madden or something, no matter what Activision would like to say.

So, who announces the tracklist first for the next mainline game?
Will it be Harmonix with the 3-peat or will Neversoft actually be able to finish their songlist on their own?
Technically, GH wins... I guess. GH: Metallica's setlist was just announced. We won't see anything on Beatles for a while, since it's not out til the Fall, I believe.

I agree with the above, though in GHWT, they've enabled StarPower chains. The problem is that starpower sections are spaced so far apart that it rarely happened for me. Also, starpower sections seem a lot longer than they are in RB.
I especially hated how the notes turned blue, since most of the time my fingers react to the color of the notes.

RB -> EA -> Madden.
Ironic.
Yeah... Not seeing it... Is that like rain on a wedding day?
He's talking about brand names not derivative games from parent companies. Even if that wasn't the case, then it would be GH -> Activision/Blizzard -> WoW

I really don't care if they ever release a Rock Band 3. What would they do differently that would warrant people to buy another kit or to buy a new kit for the first time. Just keep releasing DLC forever and I'm set.

What about the missing stars? Dammit those are important*!
Really, I'd like to see more venues. I'd like to see the large venues with make-a-setlists. I'm one of those freaks who'd like to tag some songs to not appear on random setlists**. A wider selection of clothing/accessories and guitars (ones that aren't the Special Ed. 'Look ma! It's a goat head!' kind). At a certain point, I'm done spending money and the free theme shirts mostly suck (And they're a pain to scroll through... Can't I get my closet to be organised somehow?).
That doesn't mean I wouldn't be happy with quality DLC instead of a new base game, but I think there is room for improvement.
*I think it'd be nice to have some way to tell how I'm doing with all my songs, but I really, really don't care enough to think it should be patched back in.
**Say, something like tagging only one song per tier or maybe just allowing for a block of four or five from all songs.
Well 60 bucks for over 80 songs and a fresh background appeals to me.
I had a horrifying thought the other day though... What the hell is going to happen to all our DLC when the next generation of consoles comes along? I really don't want to have to keep my outdated console hooked up for Rock Band... Especially when there is a shinier version available on my Xbox 720.

Who says it can't be compatible? They're just data files and not executables. Only the new game needs to be able to read them, not the console.

Oh, I agree. I'd imagine there are plenty of folks who have played Rock Band at a friend's house, or a party, or whatever, then gone home and told their own parents/siblings/friends/whatever something like "dude, I just played the new Guitar Hero and it's AWESOME!!!!11one".
I wasn't bringing up the article because I thought there was some kind of doom and gloom scenario in store for RB, more because I'm just disappointed in the mass market's inability to distinguish between the two. :P

The mass market is freaking dumb. They can't distinguish between anything. Most people call my Creative MP3 player an ipod no matter how many times I've corrected them. A lot of really well marketed brands do this.

Reminds me of when the NES came out, and some of my family still referred to it as "the Atari". :rotate:
That's the easiest pedal breakage to fix. Take a paint stir stick, break it in half, and duct tape it to the top and bottom pieces of the pedal. I played like that for over a month when I first got RB1.
You can also tape some magnets to the bottom of a sock and remove the pedal entirely, using your foot's proximity to the pedal base to play bass drum notes.

Like Halo 2 maps and such. You'll probably have to redownload everything though.
yeah. because of people being idiots, developers are always tightlipped now about games in progress - we don't really get to see progress reports anymore
Of course, any retractions at this point are too late. Now everyone knows that HMX "promised" 5000 songs by the end of the year.
Harmonix also promised a weasel in every Rock Band Special Edition box... and they screwed that one up. WTF is wrong with them??? :x
Which is why I am switching over to GH:WT entirely. All of my DLC be damned. No weasel, no money from me.
This whole debacle has been hilarious to watch. I mean the first info broke on Monday I think and within hours everyone on various forums realized the quote was badly taken out of context. Yet two days later the blogs must have read only the first post on whatever forum and then reported it as news, well done. I understand they are blogs but seriously spend more than 5 minutes researching something before you post.
Kotaku in general has just been shit lately. His review of the SF4 TE joystiq showed a serious lack of knowledge about that segment of the market. Yes there are 4 buttons in each row. They are there for those of us who like KoF in addition to SF. I am not asking for much but if you are going to write about the vidyas know what your talking about or take the time to educate yourself, k thx.

OT, but as a public service announcement I like to remind everyone that all Gawker media sites are tabloid attention-whores. They make no bones about the fact that each bloggers' bonuses are directly related to the amount of clicks their individual stories garner.
Essentially, Gawker Media writers will now be paid in any given month the greater of two numbers: either their base pay, or the number of times their articles have been viewed, multiplied by their site's "pageview rate" (as determined every quarter).
Ever wonder why every story teases you and tells you to "hit the jump" (a term I, as a former newspaperman, despise with every fiber of my being)? Now you know.

my pedal finally snapped
what's the best jury-rigging option until I can get a new one?

where did it snap?
horizontally right in the middle
broken pretty much clean in half

I'd say you're probably SOL unless you wanted to screw around with fabricating your own metal plate to frankenstein it back together with.
ah damn
hmm
theoretically I could just get some metal or wood cut to the size and duct tape it on there, right?
Yes, but you'd need to attach a spring or use some kind of fulcrum to actually get any use out of it.
oh well
anyone know where to buy new pedals in Melbourne?

Depending on where the break is, this is most likely not true.

Yeah, voxtar really revitalizes the guitar game for me.
So you'll be able to hook up your 360 drive and move everything over.
