Can't Connect to Xbox Live Without Testing Connection

I've searched around but haven't really found anything conclusive as to how to fix this.

First, my setup. I have a Linux gateway/server for my network, using a hub, so no hardware router. On the hub are my and my wife's computers, and a WAP. For my Xbox I have the official wireless adapter. The Xbox has a static IP on my network, and has the Xbox Live ports forwarded to it.

Ever since the beginning, if I have it auto sign-in, I get an error saying it can't connect and to test the connection. The same thing happens if I turn off auto sign-in and try to sign in after turning it on. I run the test, test comes out fine (NAT is open and all that), then I'm able to connect with no problems, until I turn of the 360. Next time I turn it on, same thing.

At some point it stopped doing it and I could auto sign-in. Then I red ringed. When I got the replacement, I had to test connection every time again. Any ideas on what could cause this?

Wow, the same thing was happening to me when I first got my Xbox a few months ago, except I do use a wireless router. no Linux, etc. At some point it just stopped doing that and it's been working fine, and I have no idea why. I guess this isn't much help, except perhaps for the info about it also happening to someone with a router.

This happens to me randomly as well. Sometimes, it'll sign in fine, other times it won't - I'll try manually, get the "can't connect" message, but then the test works correctly.

I think it has something to do with the wireless adapter not initializing fully or correctly every time, but running the "test connection" bit initializes it correctly so the connection works as expected.

I had this issue not long ago with my wired router. I cannot remember how I fixed it, but it works now. Do you have your 360 in the DMZ?

I don't think my server has a DMZ. I have the ports opened and forwarded to the Xbox.
